Painkiller (preview)
(hx) 06:57 PM CEST - Jun,29 2003

GGMania has posted up a hands-on preview of Painkiller, the upcoming first-person horror shooter from People Can Fly (ex-members of Lemon Interactive) and Dreamcatcher Interactive. The preview is based on playing an early beta build of the game. We also grabbed 30 new screenshots from the beta build.

Painkiller is a first-person horror shooter, designed to satisfy the gamer's hunger for intense, fast-paced action. You play as Daniel Garner, a seemingly regular guy who as just been killed in a horrific car accident. Trapped in a dark and unwelcoming world between heaven and hell, you struggling to uncover the reasons why you've been denied entry into heaven. Awaiting your purification, you must fight through a seemingly endless number of demon soldiers as you to attempt to stop an imminent unholy war. In other words, you are Painkiller, a mercenary for hire, charged with cleaning out nests of the undead. In the game it means you have to shoot everything that moves.

The beta version has three levels, Chaos Cathedral, Ruins (Boss Arena), and City on the Water. The first placed in dark corridors that open up into an impossibly tall gothic cathedral, the second level (boss level) is a big arena with black clouds billowing overhead and there is huge metal giant with a hammer and the third level which is set in Venice-like city with many monsters coming at you from all sides. The enemies are already dead (zombies, demons, etc.), they don't care about their health; all they want to do is to get you at all cost. If you've played any of the PC versions of Serious Sam, then you know exactly what I'm talking about. Painkiller is all about mindless frantic action.

The weapons I saw in this beta version were a chain gun/missile launcher and machine gun/grenade launcher. That mean every weapon consists of 2 modules, for example you fire module 1 (for example Machine Gun) with Fire button, and module 2 (for example Grenade Launcher) with Alternative Fire button. So you execute combos, for example you can shoot the grenade with your machine gun, making its explosion 4 times more powerful.

Graphically, the game is very nice. Painkiller is developed on a in-house engine called PAIN that handles everything very well. There are an interiors as well as exteriors levels, explosions realistically blow up monsters (to be exact, explosions send bodies flying in all directions...) and they have solid rag doll physics when they die, weapon and lighting effects are pretty solid too. Of course, the blood is everywhere :P

The sounds and music were exceptionally good considering the early state of this beta. Nothing disturbs your adrenaline level better than some good hard rock/metal, and this is what Painkiller offers during the battles. It really reminded me of the early days of Quake and the killer rock tunes they used in that game. The sound effects for the weapons and monsters were all excellent.

Of course, you will need strong PC to be able to see the game in all its glory. Painkiller requires GForce 4 as minimum, they suggest GForce FX or ATI Radeon 9700/9800 and P4/Athlon 2GHz+ CPU. (Update: Of course, the game will be playable on GF2 MX / 1.4GHz CPU too, but of course it won't look much pretty)

Overall, the game looks great and has a ton of potential. Painkiller reminds me of the good DOOM days in terms of playability.Yeah, It feels very old school just like DOOM, Quake, Blood, hopefully the end result will be better than Gore! Hopefully, they won't manage to screw up this promising game even before it will be released :) Because I cannot wait to play this baby in multiplayer! Especially, I'd like to add my very strong support for co-op :P

Looks alot like Will Rock, and that ain't a bad sign. Looking forward to this one.

Zposted - Jun, 29 2003 - 21:51
Will rock, with better graphics, physics. a storyline and better AI :)

Erbozposted - Jun, 29 2003 - 21:59
Yeah, but the living Atlas-statues where really nice, never seen such great things in a FPS.

bloodukposted - Jun, 30 2003 - 00:03
Will rock was crap.... ss1 and ss2 was so much better, the constant respawning enemies in will rock really drove me MAD!! i quickly deleted the game and smashed it to bits

There's a couple factuals error in this piece. First, the build sent out is not a "Beta." It's a very early Work In Progress build. Second, the final game does/will not require a GeForce4, and will likely support as low as a GeForce2 as a minimum. The WIP build sent out requires a GeForce4, but absolutely no optimization was done in this build.

LOL at this pussyfooting around over WIP/beta. Dude, be grateful anyone's writing previews or talking about your game in the first place.

bgladman: Man, you must be blind or what. I wrote:

1) "EARLY BETA"

2) "will require GF4" to be able to see the game in all its glory - I played the build on GF2 too, but it looked very ugly.

I have a nose for good games, and I feel this game rulez. Why do you need to compare? Sam Rock - uuuuuuuugh, I wanted to say Serious Will - no, no forget it ---- WILL ROCK was the name !! (Somethime I'm so stupid, just forgot the name...) Will Rock have nothing in common with Painkiller, except both are FPS. To the guys making Painkiller : You are great! I have played a lot of games, but my sixt sense is telling me this one is worth. It really got athmosphere.

Jerry Springerposted - Jun, 30 2003 - 15:14
Why don't they choose a better name (Painkiller) what a crap. This game industries is trying to fools us compare a first-person shooter game BF:1942 series beats the crap out of it. The bottom line I think this game is suck! it just a copy-cat and wannabe FPS.

wargyposted - Jun, 30 2003 - 15:21

The game looks good but will it plays good. Just the look but the taste could be bitter. You what I mean.

This game is going to sell for $50 - it should be $20 to compete with Will Rock - I played it at E3, it was good, but Will Rock was better at the same stage last year - this needs to be a budget title to compete

I am just glad that someone decided to release a game that was not "realism" based and didn't look like a 3rd grade class put it together! I, for one, will keep an eye out for this title to be released. Still waiting for someone to top SoF2's shoul engine, nothing like blowing limb's and heads off... Oh, and how about a grappling hook.. =)

You tell him, hx. The game looks sort of promising. There aren't enough horror games at any rate - can't wait for Silent Hill 3.

Lone Wolfposted - Jul, 01 2003 - 17:33
Hey! guys has any of you gone shop at PriceGrabbler.com, lately you know they motto says "Price Comparison". What a LIAR, bastards the price on ATI's Radeon 9800 Pro, is hitting around $399 to $400 and it almost the same price out there on the computer market world.

The trailer for this game looks great, and i'm sure waiting for this title. Just 3 things: 1. I hope the hardware demands will be ok (cmon-Athlon2000+ ?!?!?) 2. Remove the misplaced outdoor levels. Yes, they look nice, your engine can handle them, but hardcore (and surely UNDEAD-themed!) games should be in dark closed places, not on the strets at sunset! The catacombs level - rulez. 3. Make it HORROR game - not funny like SSam!

Garyposted - Sep, 03 2003 - 13:30
I think the outdoor screens look eery too... leave em in! (like they would take them out now anyway!).... Also, i stand next to HX and shout COOP ability PLEASE!!! :o)

I've played this game and it is very fun. Bullet time is gorgeous, just look at the recent trailer on their site. I've used weapon switching to juggle enemies into the air and then stapled them to the ceiling with the stake gun. As a suggestion to www.painkillergame.c, the bullet time mode, having ridiculously fast movement, should also have fast reloading, not really slow reloading. you can only get 1 stake off most times. Anyway, this game is what Doom III would be like if it didn't go the Half-life route and instead took to Serious Sam. Even some Hexen elements make their way in, like a shop/magic card items. I can't wait till this game comes out.

I already bet it on easy diffculty, played all night long! I'll play again, I liked it, the rest of you are asses. It will be boring after a while, more multiplayer would be nice. And maybe a difficulty were enemy is a tad smarter.
