BloodRayne
(hx) 11:03 PM CEST - Jun,18 2003

BloodRayne is third-person horror-action game developed by Terminal Reality (Nocturne and the Blair Witch series makers). You play the role of Agent Rayne, a half-vampire, half-human heroine who works for the Brimstone Society - a top secret government agency that hunts down and destroys supernatural threats. Your job is to hunt down and destroy supernatural threats to the world, and as the game is set in the 1930s, the bad guys responsible for such threats turn out to be everyone's favorite villain - the Nazis. Yeah, BloodRayne must face the elite nazi army to prevent them from releasing creatures of unfathomable terror onto the world in their unwavering quest for the relics. Your journey will take you through three major areas, the darkest backwater bayous of Louisiana, a formidable German Sub-bay and mysterious temple in Argentina, and an immense vampire-infested cathedral-like castle in Germany. The plot in BloodRayne is fairly straightforward, though there's many of the cutscenes with hints of additional information.

The game plays much like a standard third-person action game in which you shoot, hack, and slash your way through enemies to get to the next level. BloodRayne's action-packed repertoire includes super human strength. This allows you to hold guns that normally take two hands in a single hand. You have two guns, akimbo ability and can target two enemies at once. Also you are able to jump superhuman heights and distances and hop on and walk tightropes. In addition, you have some special vision modes that allow you to spot enemies behind walls and see great distances through fog. For example, you can use the Aura Sense, a vampire enhanced vision that allows you to sense the aura of your enemies. There's a lot of blood and severed limbs in the game, as you will take down many and many German soldiers, ruthless super Nazis, grotesquely mutated humans, hideous gurgling swamp creatures, and other parasitic monsters from below the earth's crust. However, the enemies can be sometime pretty sneaky, too. Another cool aspect of BloodRayne is the Rayne's blood rage ability (much like Max Payne's "bullet time" that engages a slow-motion effect that lets you dodge attacks and make faster, more powerful swipes with your knife, which increases the chances of dismembering your enemies.

Bloodrayne is a hard game to talk about in a review. I would say that the gameplay is where the title really shines. Unfortunately, the game has very low replay value - expect to beat the game in close to 15-20 hours. That's why it's a bit difficult to recommend this game for purchase. For more information, visit the official homepage and download this playable demo (168MB).

System requirements: Minimum: Win98, 733 MHz Intel or AMD CPU, 128MB RAM, 2 GB HDD space, 200 MB virtual memory, 4x speed CD-ROM 64MB GeForce2 or Radeon video card, Microsoft DirectX 8.1

Recommended:WinXP, Pentium 4 2.53GHz CPU or AMD, 512MB RAM, 2 GB HDD space, 200 MB virtual memory, 24x speed CD-ROM, GeForce4 Ti 4600 video card, Sound Blaster Audigy sound card, Microsoft DirectX 8.1

snd: 4/5 - great music, very good voice acting, some nice effects, Nazi Soldiers could have had some better dialouge
gfx: 4/5 - smooth and atmospheric animations, sexy Agent BloodRayne, Infernal Engine from the team that created Nocturne, lots of blood, Max Payne's "bullet time" effect
playability: 4/5 - surprisingly good fun, super powers. smooth controls, a bit repetitive, no multiplayer, lack of mid-level save points, almost no puzzles, low replay value
genre: third-person horror-action
platform: PC (available also for PS2, Xbox, GC)
release: May 2003
developer: Terminal Reality
the game is similar to: Blood Omen 2 / Enter the Matrix
publisher: Majesco

Bad game, mediocre graphics, unrealistic movement, ridiculous things (your character suffers from water and on first level you have to move on flooded swamps). Game is worse than GTA VC and Max Payne, don't know how you can even compare it to them.

more like crossbreed (or lovechild) of blade and tomb raider, as some review said :)

I want this game for all the above reasons. I Have the demo version, its ok. I've been looking on the net for the full version and some places say it won't ship till Sept. (Majesco). Another place has it in stock and will ship in 24 hrs.(Vivendi). What is the difference, if any between the versions from the 2 publishers Majesco & Vivendi? any help will be appreciated.
