Codename: Outbreak
(hx) 03:29 AM CET - Nov,23 2001

Codename: Outbreak (formerly know as Venom) is first/third person tactical shooter developed by GSC Gameworld, the development team behind Cossacks. The story is almost "classic" - Aliens have invaded the Earth and you have to carry out a number of tense and hazardous missions on the objectives captured by aliens, saving human survivors, creating diversions, preventing nuclear weapons launches, getting important information, samples etc. Codename: Outbreak features 13 different indoor and outdoor levels, possibility of stealthy movements, sniper shooting and sudden attacks, one multi-functional weapon (switchable between grenade, mine and rocket launchers with more traditional sniper rifle and sub machine-gun), ability to control two soldiers (you can choose from 12 various skilled soldiers to select your teammates from), choosing time of the day for the mission and nultiplayer with cooperative, capture the flag and deathmatch modes. It's quite good game, but isn’t for the casual gamer who expects an FPS. It's a tatical, squad based, shooter, not an FPS, despite they included an arcade mode for less skilled players. Download demo (103MB) and visit Codename: Outbreak homepage.

snd: 3/5 - great intro music, EAX/A3D support, repetitive sound effects, horrible voice acting (will be replaced by American voice actors for the US retail version)
gfx: 3/5 - good, game's engine (Vital Engine ZL) looks a little dated, resolutions up to 1280x1024 in 32 bit, superb intro movie
playability: 3/5 - quite ok, you controls two soldiers, stealthy movements, sniper shooting and sudden attacks, combining open and closed spaces, arcade mode, multiplayer (TCP/IP and IPX), too high level of enemy AI (AI always see/shot you), good price $25 (US), bugs
genre: 1st/3rd person tactical shooter
release: September 2001 (UK)
developer: GSC Gameworlds
publisher: Virgin Interactive
Good
Overall: 70%

I just looked at the screen shots and let me tell you how the original DukeNukem 3d puts it to shame. The cardboard in the box is worth more than this piece of crap.
