Star Trek Deep Space Nine: Dominion Wars
(hx) 10:57 AM CEST - Jul,26 2001

Star Trek Deep Space Nine: Dominion Wars is a real-time strategy game strongly emphasizing on the war between the Federation and the fearsome Dominion. The game allows you to give your own nature to numerous battles which featured in the last few seasons of Deep Space Nine. Although it's a RTS, the game is lack of base building and resource gathering. It's just pure strategy and combat, that mean almost each mission basically involves destroying enemy ships. So if you don't like hard-core strategy ala Starfleet Command series (though Dominion Wars shares some gameplay elements with this game), maybe will Dominion Wars more playable for you, the game feels more like an action game. At the start of game you choose the ship type and a corresponding captain, and their cost is subtracted from your credit supply and put into your fleet for use in the mission. Yeah credits rules here, but due to war, you have no infinite money supply from the Federation. So if you want the top equipment, you're going to have to earn it. Gizmo declares the game allows you to control up to six ships simultaneously, though it's a bit fake, because the interface makes it impossible to control more than one. In addition most if not all the time the ships don’t follow your commands, they just sit there waiting to be destroyed by the enemy. Aren't they smart? :P The interface is reasonably simple - includes the mini-map (which you can use to navigate) and the Command Rings (access to all of the key combat). However there are over 70 default keyboard controls, many of which involve pervert combinations of three keys at once, making it next to impossible to remember what is what :( Gizmo probably suppose you are a mutant with more hands and fingers..you should call a doctor! :) LOL. Fortunately Dominion Wars includes multiplayer battles via LAN or Internet gameplay for up to 8 players. Since each player may command up to 6 vessels, you can have up to a total of 48 ships in a multiplayer game Multiplayer game types include Death Match, Conquest, Domination, Find the Founder, and Attack/Defend Starbase. This game almost bored me to death (I hate lag in games), I would recommend it only to the hardcore Trek crowd.

snd: 3/5 - highly reminiscent of the television series, full orchestral soundtrack, no 3D sound
gfx: 4/5 - decent graphics, highly detailed ships, nice special effects such as explosions and weapon fire, realistic spatial anomalies, occasionally clumsy camera, you cannot set screen resolution and color depth
playability: 3/5 - pure action strategy, multiplayer up to 8 players, includes Starship Creator Warp II (build your own ships and import them into multiplayer), no skirmish mode, combat is too slow and lifeless, weird controls, hard to understand storyline for non-Trekkies, very poor manual, bugs
genre: tactical strategy
release: June 2001
developer: Gizmo Games
publisher: Simon & Schuster Interactive
Good
Overall: 53%
