Clive Barker's Undying
(hx) 03:07 AM CET - Mar,04 2001

Clive Barker’s Undying is the first game from the mind of the famous British horror writer (Hellraiser, Cabal etc), honestly only a great author such as Clive Barker can produce such a great storyline as seen in Undying. Set in 1920s Ireland, you take on the role of Magnus who has been summoned to an ancestral estate by his friend, its lone descendent, Jeremiah. Death has claimed his four siblings, each who have reanimated intent on slaying their living brother, the last of the family, so as to free the Curse of the Undying King. You (as Magnus) must embark on five quests before unearthing the final horror of the estate and hopefully ending dreaded curse that he befallen his family. These challenges take place across ten areas including the ancestral estate, a destroyed monastery, "he eternal autumn" and the cursed city of Oneiros. Players will have to defeat each of the evil siblings in his or her individually corrupted and demonic environments in order to keep Jeremiah alive. Clive Barker's Undying is probably the most scaring game what I have ever played. Doors opening and slamming shut, voices in the wind, ghosts soaring overhead, blood on the wall, and the expressions on the character's faces were all intended to make your spine tingle. You can wields your futuristic Quake-style weapons including a shotgun, dynamite, Molotov Cocktails, Tibetan War Cannon and Scythe of Brennus) in your left hand, and casts spells with the right. The game includes 16 spells - eight offensive and eight defensive. I didn't expect much about having spells in the game, but I was happily surprised. Each spell makes sense and has various uses that all further gameplay. Unlike first-person shooters of the past, such as Quake where enemies would come from the same direction in a repeated formation, Undying features very well done AI. Characters would follow you to a certain point until you begin to open fire, then they make the big decision of whether to run away for cover or take a chance and try to take you out. They are really pretty bitchy and trying to kill you when you don't expect it :) The graphics in this game are very impressive, the backgrounds are very well detailed and effects of fires, snow and rain are very well done. I strongly recommend you to set a higher resolutions with 32-bit color and play at night in a darkened room. Also sounds, particularly the ambient ones, are used very effectively to add to the atmosphere. Only surprising thing about this game is that there is no music at all, only in the menu screens. It's because all of the audio is focused on you listening to your environment during the game play to be more depressed :) But I bet you won't miss music during the gameplay . Clive Barker’s Undying is an excellent done game, I hope this title isn't the last from Clive Barker. For me is Undying one of those games that I want to savor and not finish too soon.
