Steel Beasts (hx) 09:42 PM CEST - Aug,30 2000
Steel Beasts is modern tank sim developed by eSim Games. By concentrating on essentials and realism, the developers may have found a way to satisfy hard-core gamers while entertaining the more casual customer. Although hard-core gamers will probably miss absence of a proper driver's position and controls. Steel Beasts features two models - the American M1A1 and the most popular German Leopard II. Game also includes integrated mission and map editors, which allow you to create custom missions with complete enemy plans, superior AI and sophisticated damage modeling, including loss of communications. Another nice idea is the powerful 2D map with line-of-sight display that allows meaningful pre-battle planning. If you never played a tank sim so don't panic, the game offers two sets of tutorials-one for the Abrams and the other for the Leopard. These well done tutorials explain the nuances of each tank's electronics and fire control systems. The controls are simple(keyboard shortcuts+mouse) but I strongly recommend you to use joystick. Steel Beasts aren't 3D accelerated game but the graphics in the game are sufficient for the task at hand and the modeling seems to be excellent. The hardware requirements are very low - 266 MHz Pentium, 32 MB RAM, 2MB SVGA. Download demo (21MB).
