Well, VR will never work.
AR could, if they can solve:
- people with glasses can wear it without fatique
- weight
- fixation (so it won't fall off your head when you nod or bend)
- air circulation (so you won't sweat under it but the CPU won't fry)
- radio (frying your brain)
- battery life
- upgradable parts (so I could add more memory, stronger CPU, more RAM, like in a PC).

But, IMHO, that's not going to happen in this decade simply because Intel needs to shrink CPU dies to much smaller, add more cores and reduce thermals.
