Quote: | AUTHOR Tom Clancy, known to millions for his Jack Ryan novels, has died aged 66.
He wrote a string of best-selling spy and military thrillers which spawned Hollywood blockbusters, including Patriot Games, The Hunt for Red October and Clear and Present Danger.
Clancy died in a US hospital near his Maryland home on Tuesday following a short illness. He sold debut novel The Hunt for Red October to publishers for £3,000 in 1984. It went on to sell more than five million copies. President Ronald Reagan fuelled sales after calling it a “perfect yarn”. It was made into a film in 1990, starring Alec Baldwin and Sean Connery.
Harrison Ford played Ryan in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, while Ben Affleck was in The Sum of All Fears.
Clancy worked up until his death, with his final book Command Authority plus film Jack Ryan: Shadow One out in December.
He married Wanda in 1969. They split 28 years later after having four children. He wed journalist Alexandra Marie Llewellyn in 1999.
Clancy also became an honorary Yeoman Warder of The Tower of London after being arrested for scaling the walls as a youngster. |
