Two Kotaku sources have added more credence to the rumor that the next Xbox, expected to battle the PlayStation 4 in late 2013 or early 2014, will be an always-online system, though it will be able to tolerate dropped connections.

Unless something has changed recently, uot; one of the sources told us over email,

I'll be getting a PS4 instead.

I'm sure the online only thing isn't a big deal for most people, but the real reason they're doing it is to make used games unplayable.

I'm just guessing but it'll probably require each new game to be registered/tied to your specific account/console in order to be played. It'll check whenever you try to launch the game and if it's on any system other than the one it was originally registered to it just won't play.

That means I'll never own the next xbox. Out of probably 3 dozen or so 360 games I've owned I'd say maybe 5 or 6 were bought new.

If Sony embraces (or just allows) the used games market to continue they will completely destroy Microsoft with the next batch of consoles.

Seemed fairly obvious this was the direction things were going. The target being used games seems like a no brainer as these are companies that are for profit. What concerns me is if this move will actually hinder sales at all. The other concern is that the xbox 360 for example did have hardware issues as did the others which means they had to be replaced at some point by many people. Quite certain they will do something like Origin/Steam and tie it all to your account forever. It's just a shame that a game you purchase for xbox won't be able to be installed on your PC since it would be tied to your account.

FCUK M$ FOR THIS DECISION!

Its just another data-sucking device so WTF HAPPENS WHEN YOUR Inet goes down then what? Stupid STUPID!!!!!! Nothing ever lasts forever especially in this modern era where everything can be taken from you within seconds. Mad

Gawd Corporations can be such a-holes x 50! Always wanting Content Control more and more..

I do not REMOTELY trust others with my use of things: I trust myself thank you. Take iCloud and also shove that as well: I don't want others holding my data to do what they wish with it. I keep it local as I then control it thank you.

Also to think of is the current trend for micro transaction in everything..

Imagine, it's always connected and your kids "buy" some new desktop icons and a few startup sounds.. soon you'll be £1000 in debt..

THAT'S part of why they want "always on" - and it allows the in-game transactions as well, even for a single player game!
