Valve's Gabe Newell likes Linux. A lot. In spite of the operating system representing less-than-one percent share by every metric used by Valve, Newell believes that Linux will play a large role in the future of PC gaming--so much so that his company is invested in making a Linux-based Steambox. In addition to releasin

Well, since Microsoft has decided they are now "a devices company," it's a good bet they'll be neglecting Windows (more than Win8, that is), so something will move into the gap. Will it be Linux or another such Unix derivative? Probably, but not absolutely. With the accelerating implosion of Apple post-Jobs, I wouldn't bet on OSX stepping up. Newell is just playing the numbers.

I know many of you kiddies born after 1980 grew up with DOS/Windows as the dominant PC operating system, so you just assume it'll always be there, but grandmas DO die. It's only a function of time.

and what are you proposing? Amiga Workbench? Understand this: OS that supports most games will always be dominant because market leans to that side. Following are the software developers that are most likely to develop for the most popular platform, not necessarily the best platform.
So, to conclude: in today's world, OS that can run the most games and porn is going to stay on top. I don't see DirectX going anywhere away from m$, nor OpenGL being taken seriously by developers.

Sorry but Gabe and company have lost it. I tried Steam on Linux. It sucks. Couldn't care less about their Steam box.

Linux alone won't cut it.
Steam alone won't cut it.
Any other hardware than PC won't cut it.
Let me know if I need to say more.

Razz

I only have steam installed because it's needed for some reloaded cracks. I ain't giving 1/4 of my miserable income for any game. I therefore actually don't give a shit about Gabe's crocked planes to milk more money out of rich American citizens.
I guess, in a way, it's better to give money on games and stuff then to buy guns then go kill a bunch of people. That's not only wrong, but also boring as shit. My countrymen cannot afford guns (and they are illegal) so they use axes to kill each other. That's way more fun, and less wasteful.

I find it ironic that you need to have Steam installed in order to use it illegally, lol

true Smile on the other hand, it doesn't need to run. It's just needed for some components. And it's just for certain games cracked by certain groups. Sometimes another group makes a paralel release that doesn't need it.
