Looks like that DirectX 11.1 will be an API that is exclusive for Windows 8, just like DX10 was to Windows Vista and DX11 was to Windows 7 (well, that was until MS released a Vista version of it). This does not shock me at all, as Microsoft is simply trying to make everyone upgrade to its latest OS, by any means necess

And so it shall be hacked and backported... not that it'd be used anywhere else than demos anyway!!!
I think MS did not notice that the few great games we see are still using DX9!

This should make customers think twice about buying an MS product ever again.

And as a consequence, game houses will probably stick with DX9 or abandon DirectX as a whole and instead, use OpenGL or some CUDA magic. I mean, who the heck would want to maintain three different builds (DX9, DX11, DX11.1?) - XP, Win7, Win8.
I'd think that MS is shooting itself in the foot with this. If their strategy is to kill PC gaming, this is a nice attempt, but it won't work.

It's not a coincidence that Valve have started pushing Steam for Linux lately. Windows 8 is already going to take big bites out of Steam eventually due to the exclusive app store they are pushing there. This won't help.

The only real reason left for home users to go with Windows is games... if games on Linux can be made as easy and widespread, Windows is going to be failing on yet another market.

And that is why one would expect MS to do things in favour of the gamers/developers and not against them.
But hey, I am ready to move onto Linux - already did partially; only need windows for games.

That just pisses me off. This only makes me want to move to a different OS even more.

There is a HUGE difference between making dx10 exclusive to vista/7 and making 11.1 exclusive to win 8.
win vista and seven have a rebuilt system structure and drivers are different so is directX implementation. However, windows 8 has no such thing in comparison to windows 7. System is the same and backporting 11.1 to win 7 will happen very quick since there is nothing that win 7 does not have and is needed by dx11.1. Probably just "cracking" the installer to work on win 7 and nothing more.

I don't understand why they would do this at all. If it prompted people to upgrade to win8 it still wouldn't get everyone (business doesn't need dx updates nor mom and pops). Is there a new xbox coming out soon? I can see having dx11 support on the new xbox which would eventually force all the pc game ports to require it which then would make people upgrade possibly.

Anyways it would be nice if I could switch to ubuntu or linuxmint and run games as a backup to win7.

Just Dual-boot win7 and win8?
Win8 is cheap as fuck just now. My wife bought Win8 pro (£49.99) for her touch-screen laptop and just dual booted.
Fuck i have a 2TB HDD, no problem putting both on -if i wanted to.
It's hardly an issue.

I would not want that piece of crap for free, thanks.
Unlike MS, I have standards.

What's the point of dual booting? I use SSD's so space/performance is at a premium. Primary reason is gaming. No point in a dual boot setup.

folks, dx11.1 cannot be locked to win8 and will be ported to win vista/7 with relative ease. Don't be paranoid. Besides, developers will probably code in dx9 or dx11 at best and we know that from the past, games that COULD "do" dx11 fell back to dx10/10.1 if you had no dx11 support.

All is fine if you give 0 fucks for microscum's attempt on bullying us into buying win8.
I for one would never buy it, I'd just pirate it but tbh I won't even bother to pirate it.

That's almost exactly what I posted earlier and in the new thread.
