This thread on HardOCP forums (thanks
EvilAvatar) talking about how Bethesda removed all the soft shadows and some of the lighting effects from the final version of
Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion.
Remember that cool E3 video which showed the prison cell with the shackles on the wall casting a shadow f

Could've at least left the feature and made it optional. At least sli or crossfire owners would be happy. |

The difference between the two pictures is that the before has a very bad contrast level in one direction, the after picture has a bad contrast level in the other direction!
Download the pictures and try messing with the contrast and brightness levels yourself.. |

read some of the hardocp ranting and i find it quite useless. seems people are bashing oblivion for the wrong reason. all the images from pcgames being shown are horrendously lacking contrast. this has nothing to do with the chains hanging in the background not throwing softshadows on to the dungeon walls behind them.
booted up ps and tossed in one of the images hardocp is going nutters over and with just a single level adjustment layer i turned this:

to this:
http://apache.dataloss.nl/~spidey/oblivion-spideyadjust.jpg
that looked like this in the old E3 vid:

clearly the missing chain shadows are bloody non-issue here (tho i am sad to hear theyve been cut). frankly if i was a bossgimp at bethesda then i'd be mighty pissed off with pcgames for capturing their baby with the gamma shot to hell. |

I was hoping Oblivion would test my rigs limits, but if its going to be less graphically intence i will be sad, but I will still go to buy it the first day it comes out, Now maybe Crysis will test my limits, that would be cool |

The Oblivion forums are kicking up shit!
I looked at those pics and the first thing that hit me was *DEUS EX*....The graphics in that game were just so aweful!!! The use of 'bloom' is a cheap skate excuse to counter poor textures.
Oblivion looks like it's going down the Deux Ex route and being a port from the XBox version to PC *instead* of being 2 seperate pieces of code -as was promised.
Sadly it's Bethesda who will suffer, they have one of the largest fan bases going and -like myself- will never forgive them if they have belittled Oblivion to console level....
Wait and see though eh? |
