TechNews - 50 Years of Innovation at Intel - tech|
(hx) 09:15 AM CEST - Jul,22 2018 |
- 50 Years of Innovation at Intel - Fifty years
ago, Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore founded Intel with a purpose: To
ponder what might be possible. To imagine, to question and to do
wonderful in pursuit of a better future. Intel's anniversary is
official July 18, 2018, but all year long we will bring together our
people, our partners and our communities to celebrate a bright future
for Intel today, and a better world tomorrow.
- Corning Designed Gorilla Glass 6 to Better Handle Real-World
Drops - Corning
today announced Gorilla Glass 6, an improved version of its toughened
glass for mobile devices. Corning specifically engineered Gorilla Glass
6 to better handle drops. The company claims the glass can survive 15
drops onto rough surfaces made from a height of one meter. The glass
can withstand drops from higher heights than Gorilla Glass 5. The glass
of today's devices is most often damaged when dropped from about waist
height. Gorilla Glass 6 is 0.8mm thick, and yet still retains strength
and opacity. The company says it improved its testing methods to
account for different impact surfaces and angles to ensure it could
strengthen the glass. Gorilla Glass 6 is equivalent to previous
generations of Gorilla Glass when it comes to scratch resistance. It
will be up to individual mobile device makers to cover their displays
with Gorilla Glass 6. Gorilla Glass 6 is already in production.
- Google Vows to Appeal $5 Billion Fine from EU - Google
has been fined $5 billion by the European Union (EU) for
anti-competitive practices. First Google required Android phone
manufacturers to bundle Google search and other Google web services
with every device as the default in exchange for access to the Google
Play store. Secondly, Google paid phone manufacturers to make sure that
only the Google Search app was preinstalled on such devices. Lastly,
Google has obstructed the development of competing mobile operating
systems that could have provided a platform for rival search engines to
gain traffic. Google has 90 days to amend the contracts with phone
manufacturers that require Google services to be set as the default on
devices sold to consumers or face additional daily fines.
- How exactly does binary code work? - Have you ever
wondered how does information travels from one device to another over
the internet? How do your speakers know which note to recreate when
you're playing music off your cellphone? Jose Americo N L F Freitas
takes you through a short lesson on what is binary code and how modern
electronics rely on binary code to communicate.
- Extract password from TeamViewer memory using Frida - Do
you use TeamViewer to ease access to any of the boxes on your network?
If so, this warning over at CVE Search (CVE-2018-14333)
is worth a look and certainly the readme on vah13/extractTVpasswords is worth a
read. While you would most likely need to be physically at the computer
in question, or if system was already compromised in some other way, it
is possible to use this TeamViewer password exploit to later gain full
control over the system remotely. TeamViewer through 13.1.1548 stores a
password in Unicode format within TeamViewer.exe process memory between
"[00 88] and "[00 00 00]" delimiters, which might make it easier for
attackers to obtain sensitive information by leveraging an unattended
workstation on which TeamViewer has disconnected but remains running.
- Huawei Says GPU Turbo Update to Boost Mate 10 Pro, P20
Pro - Huawei
today announced plans to tweak the graphics performance of its phones.
The company will update a number of devices with what it calls GPU
Turbo, a graphics processing technology that lets phones run
GPU-intense apps, such as games, faster and more efficiently. Huawei
claims that GPU Turbo optimizes system software and hardware resources
to improve GPU efficiency by 60% while lowering power consumption by
30% thanks to its re-architected method for handling graphics. The end
result is a noticeable upgrade in device performance without forcing
users to buy a new phone in order to run the latest games and apps.
Huawei plans to roll the update out to its flagship devices, the Mate
10, Mate 10 Pro, P20, and P20 Pro in August, with other devices to
follow later in the year.
- iPhone Battery Life Dropped Significantly After iOS 11.4
Update - It seems as though every new iOS updates brings
various complaints from users ranging from performance setbacks to
battery life issues, and iOS 11.4 is no exception. iPhone users running
iOS 11.4 right now have been complaining in droves that battery life
has suffered after the update. Reports indicate that there are over 33
pages of complaints on the Apple website from users suffering from
varying levels of battery drain since updating to iOS 11.4. The main
complaint is standby battery life has been significantly impacted for
many of these users. One user claims that before iOS 11.4 he was able
to go a full day without charging his iPhone 6, but after the update,
the phone only lasts about half a day. The user maintains the only
change to his device was the update to iOS 11.4.
- Apple to Bring More Emoji to iPhone Later This Year - Apple
today committed to adopting more than 70 new emoji. The Unicode
Consortium announced Unicode 11, which includes dozens of new emoji, in
February and made the final version available in June. Apple says new
emoji characters will soon grace the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and
Mac. Unicode 11 brings new representation for emoji with options for
red hair, gray hair, curly hair, and no hair, as well as more food,
animals, sports, and other items. Apple didn't specifically say Unicode
11 will be added to iOS 12, but that is the route Apple is most likely
to pursue. iOS 12 is already in beta testing and will be distributed to
iOS devices in September or October.
- Galaxy Note 9 Geekbench Score Claims Even Faster Exynos 9820
CPU - Samsung Galaxy Note fans have a lot to look forward to with
the Note 9 that's incoming next month. We saw some
leaked benchmarks turn up in late May and in those benchmarks the
device was running an Exynos 9810 SoC but that's presumably for the
non-US version of the device. More benchmarks have leaked and this
time, the leak claims that the Note 9 in this run was powered by an
even faster Exynos 9820 SoC. The new leak shows a device carrying the
Samsung SM-N960X designation. It scores a whopping 4,089 in the single
core test and 12,246 for a multi-core score. These scores absolutely
crush the scores we saw on the benchmark leak back in May when the
Exynos 9810 version racked up 2,737 on single-core and 9,064 on
multi-core. The benchmark results show this Exynos 9820 device was
running Android 8.0.0 and was using 3,483MB of RAM, or 4GB. The version
that made the benchmark run back in May was backed by 6GB of RAM. These
scores do show that the alleged Note 9 does just edge out iPhone X in
multi-core performance at least. Apple will certainly have higher
performance up its sleeves when the new iPhones launch in the coming
months packing the A12 chipset, however.
- The Great Apple Keyboard Cover-Up - This
flexible enclosure is quite obviously an ingress-proofing measure
to cover up the mechanism from the daily onslaught of microscopic dust.
Not -- to our eyes -- a silencing measure. In fact, Apple has a patent
for this exact tech designed to "prevent and/or alleviate contaminant
ingress."
- Sprint Hikes Prices with Revamped Unlimited Plans - Sprint
today announced new "Unlimited Plus" and "Unlimited Basic" plans.
Unlimited Plus replaces the old Unlimited Freedom plan and raises the
price from $60 to $70 per month for the first line. Additional lines
are discounted, down to $42 per line for a family of five. Like the old
Unlimited Freedom, Unlimited Plus offers HD video streaming and Hulu,
however Tidal music streaming is now included, and the mobile hotspot
allowance has increased from 10 GB to 15 GB. A limited-time offer
slashes the price of Unlimited Plus by $20 per line if customers bring
their own phone or buy one at full price, instead of leasing a phone
from Sprint. That works out to $50/month for one line, or as little as
$22/line for five lines. A new Unlimited Basic plan costs the same as
the old Unlimited Freedom plan, but offers less. Video streaming is
limited to SD resolution, music streaming is limited to to 500kbps, and
mobile hotspot data is throttled after 0.5 GB. Unlimited Basic includes
Hulu, but not Tidal. Unlimited Basic runs $60/month for the first line.
Additional-line discounts bring the price per line down to $32/month
for a family of five. There is no discount for using a non-leased
phone, meaning Unlimited Plus is temporarily $10/line cheaper than
Unlimited Basic with a non-leased phone. The new plans will be
available starting tomorrow, July 13th
- Opener Unveils First Ultralight Electric Personal VTOL
Aircraft for - Opener which is partially financed by Google
co-founder Larry Page has announced that their BlackFly ultralight electric
fixed-wing vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft has passed US certifications. While there is no
license required to fly the vehicle, they will require a FAA Private
Pilot written examination like a pilot would take and an introductory
course. You can check out the specifications
here. The things that stood out to me were the amphibious capabilities,
25 mile range, 25 minute charging time, 32 F - 86 F operating
temperature and 250 lbs payload limit. It even has an Automatic
Return-to-Home button for training purposes.
- Samsung's New IOT-enabled Family Hub Fridge - The Family
Hub fridge also assists to reduce food wastage, with an in-built
Food list function. The app tracks food expiry dates to help users keep
track of their groceries. The Meal Planner app provides personalised
recipes for family members based on food preferences and restrictions
while taking into account food expiration dates, helping you to squeeze
out the most taste, nutrition and value from your ingredients. The
Shopping List app then collates the items to be purchased on the next
grocery run. Integration with supermarkets and existing grocery
delivery platform might be made available in due course.
- Two Sentenced to Jail for Selling Kodi Devices - TorrentFreak is reporting that two men from the
UK have just been handed nearly 2 year prison sentences for selling
Kodi-powered devices. The boxes, called the OoberStick, were
relatively expensive boxes with a custom version of Kodi and various
addons, had been on the market since 2016. Glenn Burrows pleaded guilty
to intentionally encouraging or assisting the commission of an offense,
along with a money laundering offense. Burrows' partner Darren Wicks
pleaded guilty to intentionally encouraging or assisting the commission
of an offense. Burrows was sentenced to 22 months in prison, and is
subject to an order preventing him from selling products online for
five years, and has to notify police of his online usernames and
identities. Wicks was sentenced to 20 months in prison, and must also
do 250 hours of "unpaid work."
- Vivo Launches All-Screen NEX Phone Outside China - Vivo has
announced that its all-screen NEX flagship phone will be launching
this month in Russia, India, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Taiwan, making it
available in the global unlocked market. The international model
supports LTE bands 2/4/5/12/25/25/41, meaning basic support for
AT&T and T-Mobile networks, as well as full support for the CDMA
and LTE bands used by Sprint. The NEX has a truly all-screen design.
- Joss Whedon will return to sci-fi TV with HBO's The Nevers - Joss Whedon,
the creator of acclaimed TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly,
has been announced as showrunner for a new HBO series titled The
Nevers.
The Friday announcement confirms Whedon as "executive producer,
showrunner, writer, and director" for his first-ever non-network TV
series, following his RECENT executive producer and co-creator duties
on the ongoing series Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. HBO describes the
show as "an epic science-fiction drama about a gang of Victorian women
who find themselves with unusual abilities," and its statement makes no
bones about Whedon's legacy by claiming it "follows in the footsteps of
Buffy."
HBO did not announce a release window, actors, or other principal
members of the cast and crew.
- Star Wars: The Clone Wars to Return With New Episodes - During
San Diego Comic-Con, Disney announced the revival
of an animated series that younger Star Wars fans grew up with a
decade ago. Star Wars: The Clone Wars is set to return for a
12 episode run on Disney's direct-to-consumer streaming service. The
first five seasons of the series introduced fan favorites like Anakin
Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Padme to the series. Star Wars fans have
spent the last decade begging for the creation of the final episodes to
tie the story together.

Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized

Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When
these ancient super-species -- thought to be mere myths -- rise again,
they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity's very existence hanging
in the balance.
- George R.R. Martin's Nightflyers Season 1 Comic-Con Trailer - Follows
eight maverick scientists and a powerful telepath who embark on an
expedition to the edge of our solar system aboard The Nightflyer -- a
ship with a small tightknit crew and a reclusive captain -- in the hope
of making contact with alien life. But when terrifying and violent
events begin to take place they start to question each other -- and
surviving the journey proves harder than anyone thought.
- AVENGERS INFINITY WAR "Avengers VS Thanos" Fight - I didn't see
this in theaters. So now I have to buy the Blu-ray. Looks Epic.
- EXTINCTION Trailer #1 NEW (2018) Alien Sci-Fi Netflix - Netflix
secured worldwide distribution rights to this film after Universal
Pictures pulled the pic from its initial release date. We have no idea
if that reflects the quality of the film, but we do know that you can
catch it on the streaming platform July 27th.
- The Matrix: EARLY ACCESS - This
excellently produced short manages to skewer both the insanity that
is developers selling "early access" to their unfinished video games
and the wild costumes from the "Matrix" movies.
- Guy Films Rollercoaster Ride With 360-Degree Camera -
Imagine
if he had dropped the selfie stick. He could have nailed a rider
behind him or it could have gotten into the track mechanics. Definitely
worth the risk, right?

My problem with teamviwer is that it keeps detecting my usage as "commercial usages" and puts a 30 second limit on sessions.
