TechNews - 4GHz CPU Battle: AMD vs Intel - tech|

- Intel Rumored to Release i7-8086K to Celebrate 40 Years of the
x86 - The i7-8086K would be a limited anniversary edition
marking 40 years since Intel first launched the 8086 16-bit
microprocessor. Spec-wise, it is very similar to an i7-8700K, but the
base and boost clocks got bumped to 4 GHz and 5.1 GHz, respectively.
With proper cooling, the i7-8086K could be overclocked easily to 5.0
GHz and beyond.
- 4GHz CPU Battle: AMD 2nd-Gen Ryzen vs. Intel 8th-Gen Core -
Despite a rather large clock speed deficit, the second-gen Ryzen CPUs aren't often that far behind
their Intel rivals in application benchmarks and here we see why
when comparing them clock-for-clock at 4GHz. In applications such as
Cinebench R15 we see that
- Nvidia GTX 1180 specs and performance data leaks out -
Nvidia managed to keep the next gen GeForce GTX 11xx family of GPUs
under wraps pretty well up until now, but this did not really stop
speculators to extrapolate all the available data and come up with a
preliminary specs sheet and performance projections. The guys over at WCCFTech
put together a list of GTX 1180 specs and expected performance,
however, strangely enough, they do not cite any sources, so the usual
salt disclaimer should apply here, as well. First of all, it's still
not clear if Nvidia will use the Turing or the Ampere architecture,
both derived from the Volta one released last year. The new GPUs will
be manufactured using the 12 nm FinFET process and the die size will be
around 400 square mm. Based on the original Volta specs, the GTX 1180
could come with 3584 CUDA cores, 224 TMUs and 64 ROPs, while the core
clock could be set at 1.6 GHz (1.8 GHz boost).
On the memory side, the interface should not change from the current
256-bit one. Bandwidth and transfer speeds will theoretically reach 512
GB/s and 16 Gbps, respectively, thanks to the new GDDR6 memory that
should come in 8/16 GB configurations. The expected TDP is somewhere
between 170-200 W.
Regarding the actual performance numbers, the GTX 1180 could end up 50%
faster than the GTX 1080 and around 10% faster than the Titan Xp, at
least in 2560 x 1440 tests. The next gen GPU could be even faster in
1080p, but the real improvement should be seen in 4K tests.
- NVIDIA AI Inpainting Is Cool - Researchers from NVIDIA,
led by Guilin Liu, introduced a state-of-the-art
deep learning method that can edit images or reconstruct a corrupted
image, one that has holes or is missing pixels. The method can also
be used to edit images by removing content and filling in the resulting
holes. Learn more about their research paper 'Image Inpainting for
Irregular Holes Using Partial Convolutions.'

- Western Digital Outs Capacious 14TB Ultrastar DC HC530 HDD - Western
Digital (WD) has pulled the wraps off a new high capacity storage drive
that is aimed directly at cloud and enterprise data centers. The new
Ultrastar DC HC530 has 14TB of storage capacity, which WD says is the
highest capacity conventional magnetic recording hard drive on the
market today. The HC530 uses fifth-generation HelioSeal technology and
is meant to be perfect for environments where storage density, watt/TB
and $/TB are critical. The drive will allow enterprise users to build
petabyte-scale infrastructures. WD says that the new HC530 is a
follow-on to the 14TB shielded magnetic recording drive, the Ultrastar
Hs14. Brendan Collins, vice president of marketing, Devices, Western
Digital, said, "Our enterprise and hyperscale cloud customers demand
reliability with the highest capacities and densities to deliver the
lowest TCO for business-critical applications. Having invented, brought
to market and delivered five generations of industry-leading
innovations in helium technology, and with more than 27 million drives
shipped, our ability to maintain high quality and reliability have made
us the trusted partner of top-tier cloud providers, Internet giants and
OEMs around the world."
WD adds that the HC530 will be offered in both SAS and SATA interfaces,
it features a two-dimensional magnetic recording, and an improved dual
stage micro actuator for optimal head positioning and rotational
vibration robustness. The drive also has a self-encrypting engine
integrated and is rated for 2.5M hours MTBF. WD will sell the drive
with a 5-year limited warranty and is now offering limited
qualification samples to qualified customers. No retail price has been
announced at this time.
- Next Major Windows 10 Update Available April 30th - The
next major Windows 10 update will be available as a free
download on Monday, April the 30th according to Microsoft. You
could consider this the Spring Creators Update, but Microsoft has
declined to label it as such. However, it does have a few interesting
features that might make it attractive to some of you. One of them is
the Timeline feature that allows a person to move back and forth
between their mobile and office desktop without losing a beat if they
are using Edge or Office 365. Also, it will offer a feature called
Focus Assist that can mute notifications for you automatically when in
focus mode. Now these aren't earth shattering features, but they might
be to some. As always you should consider whether you want to jump on
this right out of the gate or let everyone else be the canary before
you upgrade.
- Microsoft Working on Cut-Down Version of OS - Microsoft
is releasing a lighter version of Windows 10 for Redstone 5,
the big OS update due out in the Fall. Dubbed "Windows 10 Lean," it
features an installer 2GB smaller than Windows 10 Pro and loses basics
such as wallpaper, drivers for CD/DVD drives, and apps like Regedit. It
is not clear what Microsoft plans to do with the SKU. It may simply be
intended for virtual machines, or Microsoft may be looking to make
another go at a version of Windows for really low-powered devices.

reporting that HTC has just released its software development kit for
the front facing cameras on the new Vive Pro, turning it into an
augmented reality developer kit. This means you have some choice if
you're a developer looking to build software for headsets that mix a
digital reality with the real world. You can sign up for the Magic Leap
SDK and try to get your hands on hard-to-get hardware from the company
while swearing yourself to secrecy. Or you can think about getting a
product like the Zed Mini or Vive Pro to more quickly and openly
explore your ideas.

- Apple Ends Production of AirPort - TechCruch is reporting that Apple has announced
the end of production of AirPort base stations, including AirPort
Express, AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule. In a statement
provided to TechCrunch, an apple spokesperson said "We're discontinuing
the Apple AirPort base station products, they will be available through
Apple.com, Apple's retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers while
supplies last." In addition, MacRumors is reporting that Apple will be
providing service and parts for the current generation of AirPort base
stations for the next five years. Not entirely surprising to me though,
Apple has not been into making new hardware for the most part lately.
- Apple's New Robot Prevents Your Dead iPhone from Pushing
Daisies - Apple
has made several commitments to environmental conservation efforts
based on recycling old iPhones. To start, the company will make a
donation to Conservation International for every device recycled at
Apple stores and Apple.com between now and April 30. Eligible devices
will receive credit that customers can use toward an in-store purchase
or put on an Apple Store Gift Card. The value will vary by device.
Conservation International protects natural resources. Further, Apple
debuted Daisy, a new robot that disassembles old iPhones in order to
recover valuable materials for recycling purposes. Apple says Daisy can
take apart nine different iPhone models, and disassemble up to 200
devices per hour, removing and sorting components. "At Apple, we're
constantly working toward smart solutions to address climate change and
conserve our planet's precious resources," said Lisa Jackson, Apple's
VP of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives. "In recognition of
Earth Day, we are making it as simple as possible for our customers to
recycle devices and do something good for the planet through Apple
GiveBack. We're also thrilled to introduce Daisy to the world, as she
represents what's possible when innovation and conservation meet."
Apple continues to work to reduce its carbon footprint, use safer
materials in its products, and power its facilities with clean energy.
Last, Apple said it will send an alert to Apple Watch users on April 21
challenging them to go outside and complete 30 minutes of activity.
Those who do will be rewarded with unique stickers in iMessage.
- Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium Captures and Plays 4K HDR Video - Sony
has announced the Xperia XZ2 Premium, a high-end Android phone that
boasts some of the most advanced imaging features available in a mobile
device. The XZ2 Premium has a 5.8-inch 4K HDR display (16:9 aspect
ratio) that Sony says is 30% brighter than its previous mobile 4K
screen. The phone relies on Sony's Bravia TV and X-Reality mobile
technologies to help improve contrast and up-convert standard content
to near HDR quality. The XZ2 Premium includes a new Motion Eye Dual
camera from Sony, which puts two Exmor RS sensors to work: one
19-megapixel for full color capture and a second 12-megapixel for
black-and-white capture with contrast info.
- Amazon Raising Price of Prime to $119 On May 11 - Amazon
today said it will increase
the price of its Amazon Prime service from $99 to $119 on May 11.
"We continue to increase the value of Prime," said Amazon CFO Brian
Olsavsky during the company's quarterly earnings call with analysts.
Amazon Prime scores members expedited shipping, shipping discounts, and
access to cloud-based services such as Amazon Prime Movies and Prime
Music. Amazon also offers discounts on select phones to Prime members
via its Amazon Prime Exclusives program. Olsavsky noted that it is
seeing "rises in cost" for these "digital benefits." The May 11 rate
increase will apply to new members. The price goes up to $119 on June
16 for existing Prime customers who renew the yearly service.
- YouTube Kids to Give Parents More Control - YouTube
has updates in store for its YouTube Kids service that will provide
parents with more granular control over what their children can find
and watch. Beginning immediately, Google's partners will cull together
"collections of trusted channels" that range across topics such as
music, sports, and arts and crafts so parents can pick and choose which
their children are allowed to watch. This tool is located in the
Profile Settings, where parents can toggle access to collections from
Sesame Workshop, PBS Kids, and more. Also starting this week, YouTube
will give parents more power over the search function. Turning off the
search function will limit the YouTube Kids app to only those channels
and programs that have been verified by the YouTube Kids team. When
search is set to off, it will not include recommendations from the
broader selection of the YouTube Kids app. Later this year, parents
will be able to take even more direct control over content. A new
feature called parent-approved content will let parents "specifically
handpick every video and channel" their kids are allowed to watch. This
feature will be added in the months ahead. YouTube said the current
version of YouTube Kids will remain available to those parents who are
comfortable with its design and feature set. YouTube Kids is free to
download from the Google Play Store.

has reduced the complexity of using two-factor authentication for Gmail
in an effort to encourage more people to take advantage of the tool.
Moving forward, iPhone and iPad users can receive security prompts
within Gmail. Previously, users needed to have both Gmail and the
Google mobile app in order to use two-factor authentication. Google
says this new method, which puts two-factor entirely within Gmail,
should be easier to use while still offering a more secure method of
authentication accounts. Google says this change is rolling out to all
users over the next week.
- Chrome 66 for iOS and Desktops Halts Autoplay - Google
is this week releasing version 66 of its Chrome browser to iOS, Mac,
Windows, and Linux devices. The core feature of Chrome 66 is tackling
autoplay video and audio. With the autoplay blocker on, web sites won't
be allowed to automatically roll video ads or other content that might
be hard to silence or mute. The autoplay blocker is turned on by
default, though videos that have no audio or muted audio will still be
allowed to play. For iOS devices, Chrome 66 makes it easy for iPhone
and iPad owners to export passwords saved in Chrome and use them in
another app. Last, Chrome 66 gains stability and performance
improvement. Chrome is free to download from the Google Play Store, Mac
App Store, Windows Store, and iTunes
App Store.

the gaming action, you'll find two king beds and a luxurious bathroom
at your disposal. The Alienware gaming room at the Hilton Panama is now
