TechNews - AMD Launches Ryzen PRO CPUs - tech|
(hx) 10:22 PM CEST - Jul,09 2017 |
- AMD Launches Ryzen PRO CPUs: Enhanced Security, Longer
Warranty, Better Quality - The AMD Ryzen PRO lineup of processors consists of six
SKUs that belong
to the Ryzen 7, Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 3 families targeting different market
segments and offering different levels of performance. As one would
expect, the Ryzen 7 PRO models are aimed at workstation applications
and thus have all eight cores with simultaneous multithreading enabled,
the Ryzen 5 PROmodels are designed for advanced mainstream
desktops
and therefore have four or six cores with SMT, whereas the Ryzen 3 PRO
models are aimed at office workloads that work well on quad-core CPUs
without SMT. The specifications of the Ryzen 7 PRO and the Ryzen 5 PRO
resemble those of regular Ryzen processors. Meanwhile, the Ryzen 3 PRO
are the first chips from the Ryzen 3 lineup and thus give us a general
idea what to expect from such products: four cores without SMT
operating at 3.1 – 3.5 GHz base frequency along with 2+8 MB of cache.
- Intel Core i7 7740X processor tested - It is time to check
out that new quad core Core i7 7740X from Intel. Yes this
is Kaby Lake-X, a more affordable processor that you will need to seat
on a X299 motherboard. Albeit limited towards dual-channel memory, the
processor does a good job, as well as it being tweakable towards 5.2
GHz on all cores
- Mi Notebook Air - Ultra Thin with Ultra Performance - The Mi Notebook Air looks similar to an Apple MacBook
Air and has a
similar name to match. It has a very light, full metal body that
is
easy to pick up, mange, and fit into a variety of computer carry bags.
There are two sizes to choose from which are 12.5-inch and 13.3-inch Mi
Notebook Air. The 12.5-inch Mi Notebook Air carries an Integrated
graphics card while the 13.3-inch Mi Notebook Air has the dedicated
graphics card.
- Malfunction at Micron's Fab-2 plant could raise global DRAM
prices - According to a recent report from electronics supply and
manufacturing blog Evertiq, production at
Micron's Fab-2 fabrication plant in Taiwan's Taoyuan City was suspended
on July 1 due to the malfunctioning of a nitrogen gas dispensing system
that led to the contamination of wafers and equipment within the
facility. DRAMeXchange estimates that Micron Technology Taiwan, also
known as Inotera, has suffered a production capacity loss of around
60,000 wafer starts per month as a result of the malfunction. Labeled
as a conservative estimate, this equates to around a 5.5 percent cut in
the global DRAM production capacity for the month of July. So, what
does the shutdown mean for consumers?
With supply down, pricing in the memory market is only going to
increase (remember what happened to the hard drive market after the
devastating flooding in Thailand several years back. Inotera is also a
major manufacturer of Micron's LPDDR4 products used to build iPhones
which means that the shutdown could impact shipments of Apple's
upcoming iPhone 8.

- Linux Mint 18.2 out now and ready for download - The
team behind the user-friendly Linux Mint distribution has released
version 18.2, dubbed Sonya. Various flavours of the release were
released simultaneously; you can find Cinnamon, MATE, KDE, and Xfce
editions all available for download on the Linux Mint website. It
doesn't look like the upgrade paths from older releases have been made
available just yet, with the team probably want to work out a few
post-release kinks before opening the flood gates. The new release
brings updates to several of the desktop environments. Cinnamon has
been upgraded to version 3.4, MATE has been bumped to version 1.18, and
Xfce has been upgraded to version 1.7.2. Meanwhile, the KDE version
will continue to ship with Plasma 5.8. The stylish LightDM has been
adopted as the login manager and has support for guest sessions. The
core Linux Mint apps including Blueberry, Xed, Xplayer, Xreader, Pix,
Xviewer, the Update Manager, and the Software sources configuration
tool have undergone further improvements. The developers added a CLI
interface for the update tool so that advanced users can now automate
updates by writing scripts, routines, or cron jobs. Furthermore, the
CLI interface has many of the features that the GUI includes such as
level selection, security updates, kernel updates, and blacklisting.
- Microsoft is cutting up to 3,000 more jobs - Earlier this
week, details emerged of another major restructuring at Microsoft,
focusing on the company's global sales teams. Massive job cuts were
rumored to be part of the firm's latest restructuring, and today,
Microsoft confirmed that a large number of people will indeed lose
their jobs. Microsoft told CNBC
that as many as 3,000 jobs will be cut from its global workforce,
primarily in its sales division. Most of those positions facing the axe
will be outside the United States. The company is making significant
changes to its sales teams to reflect changes in both its product
line-up, and how its customers are buying its products. Microsoft will
be focusing more heavily on sales related to its Azure cloud platform,
and its restructuring is designed to align the company's sales teams
with those ambitions.
- South Korea's largest cryptocurrency exchange has been hacked
- Just as South Korea is reportedly getting ready to regulate and
legalize cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, news have emerged
that Bithumb, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the country has
been hacked. Data from 30,000 customers has been compromised and
according to the BBC, the data
is being used to fool users into letting thieves steal funds from their
accounts.
In a separate report BraveNewCoin
explains that Bithumb users were victims of "voice phishing," where
someone phoned them up saying they worked for Bithumb and scammed them
out of funds. The breach is reported to have occurred in February, and
is said to have involved an employee's home PC rather than computer
servers at the firm's headquarters. Bithumb says it discovered the
breach on June 29 and reported it to the authorities the next day. The
exchange claims that the number of affected people represents
approximately three percent of customers.
The cumulative amount of bitcoins traded at Bithumb last year were
estimated at 2 trillion won (US$1.74 billion). They are one of the five
largest bitcoin exchanges in the world and hosts over 13,000 bitcoins
worth of trading volume daily, or roughly 10 percent of the global
bitcoin trade. Bithumb has promised initially to cover losses of up to
100,000 won (about $86) per customer, and will cover any remaining
amount of money lost once it has been able to verify it.
- New Zealand airport customs officials routinely demand
passwords - According to an investigative report by New
Zealand's 1 news, airport customs officials routinely force up to
two travelers each day to give up their electronic devices and
passwords for searching. According to the customs agents, the program
is designed to look for smugglers by performing a "digital strip
search" on the phones and laptops of travelers. This does not require a
court order, but the agents do claim to adhere to New Zealand's privacy
act.
The searches can be quick or much more extensive depending on the level
of danger perceived. One traveler was stopped for five hours and claims
he was "made to feel like a terrorist" on his way home from Bali.
Agents typically just peruse the data looking for any red flags but
they have admitted to also copying it and passing it along to the
government and police. According to the customs general manager, agents
can seize travelers' devices at any moment and they have tools to break
some types of encryption if it is encountered.
- Comparison: OnePlus 5 vs Xiaomi Mi 6 - Qualcomm
Snapdragon 835 is the brains behind both handhelds as will as the
Adreno 540 graphics card an Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system.
Display resolution is also the same but the screen size is 5.5-inches on the OnePlus 5 and
5.15-inches on the Xiaomi Mi 6. The Specs tend to waver from this
point. Both phones features dual camera systems. The OnePlus 5 sports
the Sony IMX398 16MP rear and Sony IMX371 16MP front camera. Xiaomi Mi6
lags behind with a Sony IMX386 rear camera and a 8MP front camera. In
terms of battery, the OnePlus 5 takes this area with a 3,300mAh battery
compared to the 3,230mAh battery on the Xiaomi Mi6. This
translates into 19:27h of talk time on the OnePlus compared to a
shorter 17:11h on the Xiaomi. However, Xiaomi edges out the OnePlus
with a better web browsing time of 12:27h compared to 10:45h
respectively.
- Top 5 things HTC U11 does better than the Galaxy S8 - Alex
takes a look at five ways the new HTC U11 beats the current top dog of the
Android world, the Samsung Galaxy S8.
- Samsung unveils Galaxy On Max with a "flagship camera" - Powered by a
MediaTek Helio P25 (2.39GHZ, 1.69GHz Octa-core) processor, the
phone packs 4GB RAM coupled with 32GB internal storage, which is
expandable up to 256GB through a microSD card. It features a 5.7-inch
full HD 1080p display and comes with Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box.
The key feature of this phone is its "flagship camera". It has a 13MP
f/1.7 rear camera and a 13MP f/1.9 front-facing shooter with an LED
flash. It is to be seen how this device stacks up against other phones
in terms of camera and if it really has a "flagship camera". Moreover,
the device has a metal unibody, 3300 mAh battery, and a fingerprint
sensor which supports Samsung Pay Mini. The phone will cost INR 16,900
(about $260) and will be up for sale on July 10 on Flipkart
- Samsung Resurrects the Note 7 'Fan Edition' for Korea - Samsung
has brought the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7 back from the grave as the Note
7 Fan Edition. The Note 7 is infamous for battery problems that led to
smoke, burns, fires, and other catastrophes. Samsung was forced to
recall the phone and later determined two separate flaws impacted the
battery, one pertaining to design and the other pertaining to
manufacturing. Samsung decided to scavenge the recalled devices to
create a new handset with a new, smaller 3,200mAh battery and its
latest software, including the Bixby voice assistant. Samsung is
manufacturing only 400,000 Galaxy Note 7 Fan Edition handsets, which
will be made available exclusively in Samsung's home market of South
Korea. The company is widely expected to announce the Galaxy Note 8
within the next two months, which will serve as Samsung's high-end,
professional-grade smartphone with stylus pen input.
- Samsung now offering a $200 Visa gift card for the purchase of
the Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+ - Although there are terms that apply,
there aren't any hoops to jump through this go-around, only requiring
users to purchase a handset from the Samsung website in full or using
Samsung's financing services. The promotion seems to have started a few
days ago, and will be available until July 15. Once the purchase has
been verified, you'll be sent a $200 OmniCard Visa which will
most likely come in the form of a virtual card. The reward will be
emailed in a few weeks time, so don't fret if it doesn't arrive
immediately after the purchase. The promotion is open to residents 18
years of age and over from the United States.

stereo 3D, it also supports a new 3D-like "holographic" technology

Red's distinctive industrial design and comes in either aluminum or
titanium. The Hydrogen One will support snap-on modules for shooting
both high-resolution video and H4V content. It will also integrate with
other Red products, serving as a touchscreen controller and monitor for
Red cameras. The phone also has USB-C and a microSD memory card slot.
It will ship in early 2018 and can be pre-ordered now in a limted-time
offer for $1,195, or $1,595 for the titanium version.
- Android's July Security Patches Are Here - Google
today provided details about its July 2017 security patches for
Android devices. The patches plug a significant number of security
holes that threaten all Android devices. Google found a significant
number of vulnerabilities, of which it classified a dozen as critical,
or able to remotely execute code. Many of the problems are related to
specific hardware and the associated software drivers that control
them, for example, a Broadcom WiFi driver, an HTC sound driver, and an
Nvidia video driver. Google is pushing two separate patches to cover
these vulnerabilities, one dated July 1 and the second dated July 5.
Google is distributing the patches directly to its own Nexus- and
Pixel-branded devices first. Google has already posted factory images
for download directly from its web site. Over the air downloads will
appear soon. Google's handsets will receive both patches in a single
download. Google said to its knowledge none of these security holes
have been exploited. Google has already given the patches to its OEM
partners. Android handset makers are responsible for updating their own
hardware with the patches.
