TechNews - A backdoor in WhatsApp - tech|
(hx) 07:39 PM CET - Jan,16 2017 |
- NVIDIA could announce the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti at PAX East 2017
- According to a report,
NVIDIA is likely to announce the rumored GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics
card at PAX East 2017. The info was apparently shared with The Tech
Buyer's Guru by a MSI rep at CES 2017, but we will still suggest you
take this story with a pinch of salt. The rep added that the GeForce
GTX 1080 Ti will be offered by board partners (including MSI) at
launch. In case you aren't aware, PAX East 2017 kicks off on March 10th
in Boston. The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti was expected to be unveiled at CES
this year, but that didn't happen sadly. The card will be based on the
same Pascal GP102 silicon as the GeForce GTX Titan X Pascal, with 10GB
of VRAM. It should offer an impressive performance jump over the
GeForce GTX 1080, although with a higher TDP of around 250W.

- New Windows 10 Privacy Controls: Just A Little Snooping... - Microsoft
will soon roll out, in an upcoming update, simplified categories
for the telemetry settings: basically it's on or almost off, depending
on your edition of Windows 10. This change is due to be pushed out to
the general public in the Windows 10 Creators Update slated for the
spring. For Windows 10 Home and Pro editions, gone is the "enhanced"
setting level, leaving users to select from the "basic" or "full"
telemetry plans. Microsoft says it will reduce the amount of data it
collects under the "basic" plan, allowing peeps with Home and Pro
editions to somewhat limit the transfer of information back to Redmond.
- NSA will share vast amounts of private data gathered without
warrant - With only days until Donald Trump takes office, the
Obama administration on Thursday announced
new rules that will let the NSA share vast amounts of private data
gathered without warrant, court orders or congressional authorization
with 16 other agencies, including the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Agency,
and the Department of Homeland Security.
The new rules allow employees doing intelligence work for those
agencies to sift through raw data collected under a broad, Reagan-era
executive order that gives the NSA virtually unlimited authority to
intercept communications abroad. Previously, NSA analysts would filter
out information they deemed irrelevant and mask the names of innocent
Americans before passing it along.
- A backdoor in WhatsApp could allow governments to read
messages - An
alleged backdoor in WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption protocol is
said to have the power to allow Facebook or government agencies to
listen in on unsuspecting users. WhatsApp has claimed that no one, not
even Facebook staff, can access the messages of WhatsApp's more than
one billion users.
The alleged backdoor was discovered by University of California,
Berkeley security researcher Tobias Boelter. He described it in detail
to The Guardian, explaining it allows WhatsApp to intercept messages by
forcing a new security key to be generated. For messages that have not
been marked as delivered, WhatsApp can have messages be re-encrypted
and re-sent using a new key that they know and provide. If the
recipient is offline, they are not made aware of this change in
encryption and the sender is only notified if they opt-in to encryption
warnings.
- Samsung Likely To Unveil Foldable Phones In Q3 - Samsung
Electronics is highly likely to unveil foldable
smartphones in the third quarter of this year, according to sources
familiar with the matter. "Samsung is expected to roll out more than
100,000 units of fold-out devices in the third quarter," a source told
The Korea Herald. The smartphone, whose panels face outward upon
folding, may be used as a 7-inch tablet when unfolded, he said.
Samsung, had initially completed the development of fold-in phones that
tuck the screen inside when folded. It began the development of
fold-out technologies around August, deeming that users may find it
inconvenient to unfold the phones every time they want to use them.
"Since the company already secured fold-in phone technology, it was not
a big challenge to shift into the fold-out phones," he said.
- HTC U Ultra Is New, Glass-Backed Flagship Phone - HTC has
announced its new flagship phone, the HTC U Ultra, along with a smaller
version, the U Play. Both phones have a new design with colorful glass
on the front and back, and a metal frame. The rear glass is fully
curved at all four edges, a first. HTC developed a unique process
called optical spectrum hybrid deposition" to give the glass
multi-layered color. Available colors are: blue, white, black, and
pink. The U Ultra has a 2-inch secondary touch-screen above the main
display, much like the LG V20. New "HTC Sense Companion" software uses
an AI to learn about you and offer intelligent suggestions. It can
learn which are your most important contacts and apps, and only surface
those notifications on the second screen. It can also advise you when
to charge the phone if your schedule indicates you may run out of power
before bedtime. (The battery rates 3,000 mAh.) The HTC Sense Companion
will be on both U-series phones, as well as other new HTC phones this
year. The U Ultra's Super LCD 5 main display measures 5.7 inches and
has Quad-HD resolution. It's powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821
processor and 4 GB of RAM. HTC gave the U Ultra four microphones that
are always listening, and it can record "3D audio". The main camera is
a 12-mgeapixel UltraPixel sensor, similar to the HTC 10 but with
improved PDAF (focusing). A 16-megapuxel camera graces the front. Other
features include 64 GB of internal storage, memory card slot, Android
7.0, Hi-Res audio, Cat. 11 LTE, fingerprint sensor in the home button,
NFC, and Quick Charge 3.0. It has a USB-C port with USB 3.1, but no
3.5mm audio jack. The U Ultra is now available for pre-order from
htc.com for $750, in an unlocked version that will work with the LTE
networks of AT&T and T-Mobile. It will ship in early March. The U
Play has the same design but smaller, with a 5.2-inch display, no
second display, and a more modest main camera and processor. Other
features are similar. HTC has not announced plans for a US-compatible
version of the U Play
- App Store Antitrust Case Against Apple Allowed to Proceed - An
on-going lawsuit accusing Apple of holding a monopoly on the market
for iPhone apps has been given new life today thanks to an appeals
court ruling. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Apple's sole
distribution method of mobile apps for the iPhone may be
anticompetitive. The original lawsuit was filed in 2012. It charged
that Apple's policy of allowing only apps distributed via the app store
onto iPhones violates federal law. Apple's legal argument centered on
the idea that the App Store serves only as a platform for end users to
buy apps from developers, the iPhone maker sees the App Store as shelf
space that is rented out by app writers. However, app developers pay a
30% portion of revenues for the ability to sell via the App Store.
Moreover, people pay Apple directly for apps via iTunes; they do not
pay developers. Initial rulings in the case sided with Apple, but
today's decision reversed lower courts, as iPhone owners cannot buy or
install apps via any method other than the App Store, lest they
jailbreak (or hack) their device. Apple maintains that this policy
protects end user security, but a collection of iPhone owners contend
it leads to less competition and higher pricing for mobile apps. It's
not clear what the next steps in the case are, nor where they may lead.
- Android Wear 2.0 is coming in early February - An email
sent out to Android Wear developers has revealed that Android Wear
2.0, a major upgrade to the platform announced at Google I/O back in
May 2016, will be released in early February 2017. Previously the
update was expected to launch in "early 2017". Developer previews for
Android Wear 2.0 have been available since the middle of 2016, with
Google originally eyeing an end-of-2016 launch for the update. It's
still not clear exactly why Google delayed Android Wear 2.0 to 2017,
but more time to polish the operating system and its apps is usually a
good thing.

I wonder if the Germans or Russian seeking to use Win10 will build a decent software firewall that filters out all the rubbish the Americans and the Chinese are trying to collect.
Agnitum Outpost was one of those but it was sold recently so it's no more.
quote: NSA will share vast amounts of private data gathered without warrant
I guess it will help Trumps' business growth.
quote: A backdoor in WhatsApp could allow governments to read messages
They get a backdoor built into just about anything. Not sure why WhatsApp is any more special than Windows or Skype.

Good news.

Meh. It's a very small market. I wonder how much they invested.
Then again, they can afford it.
NyaR | (09:54 AM CET - Jan,17 2017 ) | Agnitum was indeed a great firewall. I suggest you check out SpyShelter as a replacement.
Bert | (07:37 PM CET - Jan,17 2017 ) | Tom> Collecting anonymous data is done by everything but if that data serves to make the product better why not?
The metadata collected may be used for improving a product however the data goes well beyond that need. The other post of the NSA sharing information WITHOUT WARRANT is a further watering down of lines of privacy. EU regulations, Russian control of the media, etc. Tom makes the point we all know every entity and his dog is collecting all sorts of information on each one of us and we've all read it in science fiction books of the past. We're doomed gentlemen.
I remember the young internet and its simplicity. Now the money grubbers, the eyeballs of big brother, and regulatory freaks have screwed it all up for the rest of us.

Thanks for the recommendation!
I see there is a firewall-only build available, but I could not find any current reviews of the firewall piece (all reviews included the other piece).
This looks good, though it is two years old.
Are you actively using it?
How do you find it in comparison to Outpost?
Rule creation?
Thanks! | |
