TechNews - Windows 10 is 'Recommended' Update - tech|
(hx) 11:57 AM CET - Feb,06 2016 | FYI, Microsoft quietly made its optional Windows 10 update for
Windows 7 and 8.1 users into a ''recommended'' update, and your system
may automatically upgrade to the new operating system depending on your
Windows Update settings.
The good news is that the Windows 10 installation will not finalize
without first prompting the user. However, some home users may want to
double check what they are clicking when the notification pops up to
avoid an unintentional operating system upgrade. Home users can disable
recommended updates in the Windows Update settings, and Enterprise IT
administrators can disable the upgrade using Group Policy settings or
by using the DisableUpgrade registrykey. In a worst-case scenario where
your PC is updated to the new OS but you don't want it, the process can
be rolled back for up to 31 days after the upgrade. (Unfortunately,
it's not so painless process as they claim). The change from
"optional" to "recommended" may come off as an aggressive move from
Microsoft, with the perceived pressure of upgrading to Windows 10
coming from the company's mission to update one billion devices to the
new OS this year -- an ambitious goal that some contest may make the
company eventually force users into an unwanted OS upgrade.
Microsoft provides instructions for disabling the Windows 10 upgrade, but they require hacking around in the Windows registry or Group Policy, ensuring most Windows users won’t feel comfortable doing this. The third-party GWX Control Panel app has been the best way to configure this, but it has to regularly update because Microsoft keeps finding ways around it
- iPad Air 3 May Have 4K Panel And 4GB RAM - Apple is
expected to unveil new models of its iPad Air in March 2016
and production will start in the second quarter, with General Interface
Solution and TPK Holding to supply touch panels, according to
Taiwan-based supply chain makers. The new 9.7-inch device will
reportedly come equipped with a 4K resolution panel and up to 4GB in
RAM, in addition to improved battery life. Apple believes that despite
a decline in the tablet market and increased competition globally, it
still has a base of dedicated customers who are looking to upgrade
their iPads, the makers noted.
- Apple Accepting Broken iPhones As Trade-Ins - Apple
will now accept damaged iPhones as trade-ins when people wish to
upgrade to a new iPhone. Previously, Apple only accepted working
iPhones as trade-ins, but will now take in iPhones with "damaged
displays, cameras, and buttons within reason." Apple will credit people
who turn in a damaged iPhone 5s with $50. The company will credit
people $200 for a broken iPhone 6 and $250 for a broken iPhone 6 Plus.
Phones that don't have cracked screens or broken buttons may be worth
up to $350. Apple hopes the change in policy will convince people
holding onto older, possibly busted devices to upgrade. The new Apple
trade-in policy is available at Apple's retail stores, but not online.
- Thermaltake Launches 3DMakers Site - Can't find the exact
part you are looking for in your latest PC build? Thermaltake is
looking to make that a situation that will never happen again. 3DMakers.com
allows users to upload and download free 3D printable PC mods of all
kinds. If you are into 3D printing, and you might be soon, you will be
glad to learn that all of the files are in a 3D-print-ready STL format.
While this is in its infancy, I can see this getting big in the coming
years. You know, before the death of the PC. Thermaltake already has a
some files ready for download to 3D print that you can use to further
modify your new Core P5 Thermaltake chassis.
- Microsoft Building Underwater Data Centers? - Introducing
Microsoft Project Natick, a Microsoft research project to
manufacture and operate an underwater datacenter. The initial
experimental prototype vessel, christened the Leona Philpot after a
popular Xbox game character, was operated on the seafloor approximately
one kilometer off the Pacific coast of the United States from August to
November of 2015. Project Natick reflects Microsoft's ongoing quest for
cloud datacenter solutions that offer rapid provisioning, lower costs,
high responsiveness, and are more environmentally sustainable.

- Dutch police training eagles to take down rogue drones - Using these
birds of prey to capture drones is part of a new trial by the Dutch
police in collaboration with Danish raptor training firm Guard from
Above. Once an eagle is trained to recognize a drone, it can then grab
one from the sky and carry it to safety. The handlers then trade the
drone for treat to reward the eagle. Drone-killing eagles is just one
solution the police force is testing against illegal UAV activity. They
are also trialing a variety of other physical and electronic methods,
including using a net, but the biggest advantage the birds have is that
they can carry a drone away from a crowd, meaning there's little risk
of an incapacitated UAV falling and injuring someone below.
- Google, BlackBerry Make February Security Patch Available - Google
is now delivering a security patch to Nexus smartphones and
tablets. The patch resolves 10 issues, of which five are considered to
be critical. The two most severe problems could allow for remote code
execution through a WiFi driver and a media server. Google found the
vulnerabilities in January and alerted its hardware partners to the
problems. The security patch is available via factory images from
Google's developer web site, but the company will push the update out
over the air in the days ahead. Google plans to provide a new version
of Android 6 Marshmallow to the Android Open Source Project in a day or
two. Google says to the best of its knowledge that the security holes
were not exploited. BlackBerry, too, is pushing the February security
patch to the BlackBerry Priv smartphone. Other phone makers are
expected to deliver the patch in the weeks ahead.
- T-Mobile Offering Free Phone to New Prepaid Customers - T-Mobile
will give a free phone to new customers who sign up for one of its
prepaid services. The free phone deal kicks off February 3 and includes
the Coolpad Rogue, ZTE Obsidian, LG Leon, and Samsung Core Prime.
Customers must select a Simply Prepaid, Simple Choice Prepaid, or
Simple Choice No Credit plan valued at $40 per month and up in order to
receive the free phone. Customers who opt for a Simple Choice No Credit
plan can receive an extra $50 mail-in rebate when activating a second
line. T-Mobile didn't say how long the free phone deal will be
available.
- US Mobile Selling Xiaomi and Meizu Handsets - U.S. Mobile
recently added
several phones from Xiaomi and Meizu to its lineup, making it the
first U.S. carrier to sell the Chinese handsets. Xiaomi and Meizu have
both said they intend to enter the U.S. market, but have so far not
landed any carrier deals. That changes today. U.S. Mobile is offering
the Xiaomi Redmi 2 for $119, the Xiaomi Mi 3 for $139, the Xiaomi Mi 4i
for $219, and the Meizu M2 Note for $149. U.S. Mobile is a prepaid
carrier that resells access to T-Mobile's network. The phones from
Xiaomi and Meizu run Android and can access T-Mobile's HSPA network,
but not its LTE service. U.S. Mobile offers a wide assortment of
service plans that can be customized to suit individual budgets. The
Xiaomi and Meizu phone are available directly from U.S. Mobile's web
site, where it sells an assortment of competing smartphones. "U.S.
consumers have traditionally had to compromise to afford incredible
devices," said Ahmed Khattak, founder and CEO of US Mobile. "Now, with
the launch of our marketplace, we are thrilled to offer complete range
of exceptional smartphones for low monthly payments and to give our
customers access to exceptional phones otherwise not available in the
U.S."

every goddamn test on the internet + what my friends told me - disagree with your statement. Your old windows install must have been shit or placebo is strong with you ;)
edit: wait, compatibility? Now I know you are joking.
Tom | (10:27 PM CET - Feb,08 2016 ) | I'm not arguing with you. My facts are fact. I know my system and it is by far faster snappier in almost everything compared to Win7. I don't give a rats ass what Tom's Hardware or some other bullshit supposed tech site says.
heretic | (10:49 PM CET - Feb,08 2016 ) | Tom> Still haven't had a single issue with Windows 10. Don't regret the upgrade a single bit. 8)
So far, based on my own testing, fixing accidentally upgraded computers and discussions with other IT professionals both face-to-face, the upgrade process in Windows 10 is garbage.
Among the drawbacks:
- Like any upgrade (such as from Windows 7 to Windows 8), the machine just doesn't act as well as if it were cleanly installed. So far, after an upgrade, I've seen apps randomly no longer start, machines boot slower, etc.
- I absolutely not going to recreate install images every 4 months.
- The upgrade process takes forever compared to updates. If a machine, for some reason, upgrades in the middle of the day, well -- that machine is basically unusable for a couple of hours.. How do I explain this to my customers?
- After upgrade, some my customers lost certificates, some important settings, some older printers don't print, scanners don't scan, one customer even lost all data (and it wasn't because bad hardware). Even the best recovery tools didn't work. (Windows 10 simple wiped whole user profile on military level)
- Apparently, Microsoft is resetting some file-association defaults. That's garbage enough for home environments, but it can be disastrous in work environments.
I could write a book about annoying things in Windows 10. Some big things and many simple little irritations. (ie. big thing: debugging issues connecting to a server is a pain in Windows 10; little irritation: When searching for a file in file explorer windows 10 does not remember the last search terms - Windows 7 did..). The whole "settings" function is Win10 is a complete mess.. A complete nightmare. How can MS even consider releasing this OS in this state !!! It's half baked potato.
Overall, Windows 10 is absolutely, positively not ready for enterprise. It's not even close!!!
gx-x | (01:22 AM CET - Feb,09 2016 ) | Tom> I'm not arguing with you. My facts are fact. I know my system and it is by far faster snappier in almost everything compared to Win7. I don't give a rats ass what Tom's Hardware or some other bullshit supposed tech site says.
This is like saying God exists because Bible says so and Bible is correct because God says so. It's called circular argument. You convinced yourself that you are right and that's that, everyone else is wrong. You calling something "A fact" means jack shit to the rest of us. You are not the center of the universe nor any authority on anything regarding this subject (save maybe for your own computer). It also does not disprove me saying that your previous windows install was in a shit state. A clean install of win 7 might have done the same thing for you.
It doesn't really matter. No one is going to change ones opinion. For me, the only reason to install win 10 will be dx12 game that I want to play IF it actually works better in DX12 compared to dx11. But that's just me. Until then - 8.1 stripped of metro and with classic start menu app is more than sufficient.

The same here. Stripped Windows 8.1 + StartIsBack is probably the best setup right now.
