TechNews - When Will The World End? - tech|
(hx) 12:56 AM CEST - Oct,26 2014 |
- AMD Catalyst Beta Driver v14.9.2 - AMD now offers a new
Catalyst version 14.9.2 Windows beta driver for AMD/ATI graphics
cards, indicating this is recommended to play Sid Meier's Civilization:
Beyond Earth, the just-released strategy seque
- Civilization: Beyond Earth Benchmarked - It's not too
surprising to see NVIDIA's GTX 980 taking the single GPU
performance crown for Beyond Earth, but additional driver tuning
may
change things a bit. AMD also had a slide showing the R9 290X 8GB
edition leading the GTX 980 in performance. Hmmm....The good news is
that if you have any reasonably modern GPU - from the GTX 770 and R9
280 (nee HD 7950) - you should be able to run at 1080p and High or even
Ultra quality settings. Lesser GPUs can still handle the game as well,
and if you're curious it's possible to get frame rates well over 100
FPS even at 1080p if you drop to lower quality settings.
- Upgrading the SSD in Chromebook & MyDigitalSSD Super Boot
Drive M.2 2242 SSD Review - Because Chrome OS is designed for a
web/cloud environment, it does not
play nice with local storage. While you can technically have some
level
of file management inside the downloads folder, it is a compromise and
the user experience is far from good. There is no proper music player
for instance, so you are limited to using the Files app (a Chrome OS
take on the Windows Explorer) for song selection, which works but is
nowhere near as convenient as using Windows Media Player or iTunes for
playback with support for playlists and other common features. The
experience just feels incomplete if you are used to using Windows or OS
X because of the limited functionality.
- Microsoft makes it possible to use your Xbox One Kinect with
your PC for $49 - Microsoft has announced a new adapter that will let you use the
Kinect that came with your Xbox One with your PC. The device
will cost you $49 and will allow it to work with Windows 8 and 8.1
machines via USB.
- Demo SLAM! (Fuji Xerox,Canon,Sharp,Ricoh,Konica Minolta) - Hah that's
pretty cool!
- Microsoft explains why you should get a Surface Pro 3 - Have
your computer-buying decisions kept you up at night, tossing and
turning at life's unanswered questions, like "what computer should I
purchase this year?" and "will I deeply regret my choice months later?"
Have
no fear, because Microsoft is answering these questions for you,
and explaining that you should indeed buy a Surface Pro 3 instead of
any of Apple's Mac computers.
- Xbox One Update: New Friends, Snap, TV Features and More - Check out
this video to see exactly what improvements will be installed.
- Windows 10: MKV support out of the box - One item that is
new in Windows 10 that was not present in Windows 8.1 is support for
MKV files out of the box. For those who do not know, MKV files are a
popular format for movies and the addition of this support will likely
appease many Windows users. If you want to test out support for MKV on
your install, you can download a sample video from Jellyfish. After
the file downloads, when you open it up, Windows will ask you what app
you want to use to open this type of file with; select Windows Media
Player. After you select WMP, a warning will pop up saying that the
player does not support this file but if you click 'Yes', the file will
then play. This means that Windows 10 does have support for MKV, even
if it is early in the implementation, for the file type.
- Windows 10 Registry Tweak Will Block Future Updates - If
you were one of the many brave souls that performed the registry
tweak to be able to unlock new preview builds of Windows 10, you
are no longer able to receive future build updates unless you re-tweak
your registry. After performing that fix, you should be back into the
release channel that will allow your machine to receive the new
updates. As always, tweaking your registry is not for the novice user
and we are betting that if you made the change in the first place, you
should know how to perform the action described above.
- Windows 10: A few new touch friendly features - The
latest build of Windows 10 to hit the public release channel is build
9860 and it brings with it many new features. The first
feature for touch users is that the keyboard will automatically pop up
when touching a text box, the second is access to the title bar by
swiping down in full screen modern apps and the third is access to the
taskbar by swiping up when a modem app is in full screen mode. You can
check out these three new features in the video below.
- Google Debuts 'Inbox' As a Gmail Alternative - Google today
announced a new service called Inbox. The app, which was developed
by Google's Gmail team, offers a new take on email by categorizing
emails and highlighting the important details therein. Inbox offers
three core features: bundles, highlights, and reminders/assists.
- Spotify Intros Family Plans, $30 for Up to 5 Accounts - Spotify
has announced family plans, a cheaper way to let family members
enjoy the music streaming service on their mobile devices. The Spotify
Family Plan allows each member of a family -- up to five people -- to
create their own account with their own playlists, favorites, and
devices. Each account has access to ad-free and offline music playback
and other Spotify Premium features. The main account still costs $10
per month, but each additional account costs only $5 to add. So a
family with five accounts would cost $30 per month. Spotify said the
Spotify Family Plan will be rolled out globally over the coming weeks.
- Apple iPhone 6 Plus Has Yet Another Problem - You might
have heard about the Bendgate issue with Apple's 5.5-inch
iPhone 6 Plus. Well, it seems that is not the only problem with the
device. According to many users, who have been placing complaints on
Apple Support Communities, the iPhone 6 Plus is experiencing crashes.
- Apple Releases iOS 8.1 with Apple Pay - Apple today released
iOS version 8.1. The system update, for iPhones and iPads,
activates Apple Pay and fixes a number of bugs. Apply Pay is Apple's
mobile payment system. It makes use of the NFC radio and Touch ID
sensor on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus to enable tap-and-go payments
at participating retailers. iPads can use Apple Pay to make in-app
purchases. iOS 8.1 also provides access to iCloud Photo Library beta,
and adds support for SMS messaging on the iPad and Mac computers. iOS
8.1 is free to download over the air.
- Samsung reveals the Galaxy S5 Plus - Samsung has launched
the Galaxy S5 Plus smartphone, which Forbes
calls the "Android world's fastest smartphone," and maybe rightfully
so. The refresh is fairly straightforward: replacing the Qualcomm
Snapdragon 801 chipset, they've put in Qualcomm's Snapdragon 805
chipset instead-- the same hardware found in the Galaxy Note 4 and
Nexus 6. Some of the benefits of the Snapdragon 805 include a
significantly improved memory bandwidth, upgraded GPU, and an improved
processor. One element worth mentioning, however, is that Samsung has
under-clocked the CPU compared to the Note 4. While the Note 4 is
clocked at 2.7 Ghz, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Plus is clocked at a slightly
lower 2.5 Ghz. Still, given that it is the only true smartphone with
the Snapdragon 805 chipset, that makes it the world's most powerful
Android smartphone -- for now, anyway. One element that is also
improved with the new chipset is the 4G performance: the Snapdragon 805
provides support for "LTE advanced" which doubles bandwidth potential
to 300 Mbps downstream transfer.
- Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact Available For Pre-order In The
US - You can book the 32GB version of the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact
that comes with a price tag of $499.99. Just to remind you, the tablet
comes equipped with an 8-inch 1200 x 1920 Triluminos display, a
quad-core 2.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB RAM, an 8.1MP
primary camera, a 2.2MP selfie camera, microSD card slot (cards up to
128GB), and a 4500 mAh battery.
- South Korea Prepares for 10Gbps Broadband - 1GB in 0.8 Secs - While
AT&T and Verizon argue over an FCC proposal that would set 10Mbps
as America's new minimum speed to qualify as "broadband," South Korea
is positioning itself to introduce 10Gbps fiber service. SK Broadband
will introduce its new 10 gigabit per second Internet service at the
Oct. 20 Plenipotentiary Conference of the International
Telecommunications Union to be held at Busan's BEXCO Center, in
partnership with the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and
the National Information Society Agency. With the latest advances in
broadband technology coming mostly from Asian countries like Japan and
South Korea, citizens of both countries are proud of the fact they are
way ahead of the United States. SK Broadband says its 10Gbps will be
100 times faster than Korea's current average broadband speed of
100Mbps. Downloading a 1GB file takes 80 seconds with Korea's average
broadband connection today. SK's new 10Gbps service will download the
same file in 0.8 seconds.
- USC Researchers Track When The Web Sleeps - Researchers
at USC say the internet actually sleeps, almost like a living
creature.
- Stephen Hawking Joins Facebook - If you are a fan of
Stephen Hawking, you can now follow him on his new Facebook page.
He will be sharing his insight into the universe with all to see on his
page and it's a sure bet his presence on Facebook will not hurt his
upcoming biopic release one little bit. His page has also posted a
video of Hawking accepting the Ice Bucket Challenge, with his three
children taking the plunge on his behalf. "It would not be wise for me
to have a bucket of cold water poured over me," Hawking says. The video
is perhaps a fitting start given that Hawking has dealt with motor
neuron disease for most of his life. While Hawking joining Facebook is
certainly an exciting moment for science enthusiasts, this in part
appears to be a marketing move for the upcoming Hawking biopic The
Theory of Everything as well. So far there's no promotion for the movie
on his page, but publicity for the film is going out of its way to make
a note of Hawking's new digital presence. Even if that's the case,
Hawking's thoughts are still being made a lot more accessible - his
page is already approach 1 million followers after being publicized
just six hours ago - and it's hard to take fault with that even if
advertising may be responsible for getting the ball rolling.
- Check Out The Chimps With Google Street View - You can
check out all the chimpanzees at Gombe National Park now thanks to Google
Street View.
- Little Girl In An LED Minnie Mouse Costume Is Precious - Not only is
this adorable, but the costume itself is receptive to noise and
changes color when it detects sound nearby. Looks like someone's going
home with lots of candy this year.
- Creatures with Creations - 'Creatures
with creations and their segregation of joy' is the title of a
design research on how to embed movement related to expression and
emotional release in a daily life. Due to multi functionality of
computers and their expansion most people spend their working hours
while siting behind a computer.
By making an office chair based on the dynamics of the body and linking
these body movements to the control of the interface, work can become
dynamic and expressive again. An attempt on integrating joy.
- Petaminx Tutorial - Full - Over 8 hours
of Petaminx tutorial and commentary in full HD! Every step in the
scramble and solve of a Petaminx is shown in real time. This is very
relaxing to watch...or not? :-D
- Autobild blows China's fake BMW X5 sky high - Autobild
attempts to give the CEO a proper driving test, but it fails in
spectacular fashion. This is a Chinese SUV with no apparent redeeming
qualities, and the video shows what happens from there. Be warned,
the clip is entirely in German, but it shows enough of the vehicle's
qualities to make it clear what's happening and why.
- Audi recalls 850,000 A4 models globally for airbags that won't
- Audi has announced that it will be recalling 850,000 A4 sedans,
wagons and Allroad models across the globe due to a software problem
that could prevent the front airbags from deploying. All 850,000
vehicles were built after 2012. Audi has already adjusted production of
new A4s to eliminate the software glitch. Meanwhile, the German
manufacturer was quick to emphasize that Takata did not manufacture the
affected airbags. According to Reuters,
250,000 of the affected A4s were built for the Chinese market, while
another 150,000 were sold in Germany. Audi didn't provide a breakdown
beyond those two countries, although it'd be a surprise if there
weren't at least some affected airbags in the US market.
- Honda CR-V 2014 4WD failure - A video
shows several attempts to climb the hill, but the CR-V remains
still for at least 15 second as the front wheels spin -- increasing rpm
until they slide off the side of the rollers. Notably, the magazine ran
into the same problem with the 2014 CR-V. Honda then released a
software update, reprogramming the AWD control system to fix the
problem, however the functionality appears to have reverted for the
latest model year.
- Piloted driving - the event at the Hockenheimring - On
October 19th 2014 an Audi RS 7 piloted driving concept raced the
Hockenheimring driverless at the physical limit. These are the
highlights of the event.

your first look at Ultron trying to tear apart Captain America, Iron
Man, Thor and the rest of the world in the first
official teaser trailer for Marvel's "Avengers: Age of Ultron," in
theaters May 1, 2015!
- Late Phases - Official Trailer - (2014) - Blind war
veteran Ambrose McKinley (Nick Damici, Stake Land) has recently
moved to Crescent Bay, a seemingly peaceful community on the outskirts
of a dense forest. On his first night in his new home, McKinley hears
his elderly neighbor attacked by something he's convinced isn't human.
When the creature then kills his seeing eye dog, McKinley's thirst for
justice turns into a one-man vendetta against the monster that's
terrorizing his neighborhood. And when he's stonewalled by both the
police and his fellow residents, he decides to gear up and prepare to
fight the beast one-on-one. Now it's man vs myth as McKinley readies
himself for what could be his final battle. With a stunning lead
performance from Damici as the take-no-prisoners McKinley and
jaw-dropping practical special effects, director Adrian Garcia
Bogliano's LATE PHASES is a suspense thrill ride unlike any other.
- Insidious: Chapter 3 Trailer - The newest
chapter in the terrifying horror series is written and directed by
franchise co-creator Leigh Whannell. This chilling prequel, set before
the haunting of the Lambert family, reveals how gifted psychic Elise
Rainier (Lin Shaye) reluctantly agrees to use her ability to contact
the dead in order to help a teenage girl (Stefanie Scott) who has been
targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity.
- Every On-Screen Death In The Original 'Star Wars'
Trilogy - The original "Star Wars" films don't really have
any blood or gore to speak of. But once you start totaling up the
deaths of pilots, troopers, and whole planets, it becomes apparent that
one of our most beloved film trilogies contains the equivalent of
several genocides.
