TechNews - Holograms & 3D Porn: Expert Predictions - tech|
(hx) 10:15 PM CEST - Oct,11 2014 |
- Holograms and 3D porn: Expert predictions for a gigabit
Internet - "Vivid" telepresence - holograms, immersive gaming,
new collaboration
services and even 3D pornography - could be the next big thing as
gigabit-per-second broadband service spreads across the U.S. Enhanced
telepresence and detailed virtual worlds were two of the main themes
that emerged when the Pew Research Center asked more than 1,400
Internet experts and prognosticators about the possible benefits of a
widely available gigabit Internet. Survey results were released
Thursday. The most common theme in the nonscientific survey is that
"this level of bandwidth and connectivity will change basic human
interactions," said Lee Rainie, Pew's director of Internet, science and
technology research. "It'll change the idea of being together, what
community can be."
- Windows 10's very different way of updating - It looks
like Microsoft's next OS will bring with it a
different way of updating as well. What do you think of the change?
- Windows 10 Technical Preview Using Real-Time Keylogger? - If
you have installed the Windows 10 Technical Preview, you also
gave permission to Microsoft to collect data of your usage and
report that back to Microsoft as feedback to improve the product.
Closer examination of the code shows that you could be sending data in
real time as you type.
- Windows 10: 'Aero Glass' theme coming soon via simple mod - If
you are still using Windows 7, there is a good chance that you are
using 'Aero Glass'. The theme has been widely popular among enthusiasts
over the years, and if you are running Windows 10, you will soon have
the option to turn this theme back on. The chaps over at Glass8.eu
are working diligently to release the tools needed to enable the
theme. While their website makes it seem like the release of the files
needed to enable the theme are not going to be available anytime soon,
a post by the creator on MDL states that because there are "no large
changes in Win10's DWM, you can expect Aero Glass for Win10 earlier
than" previously expected. Like many modifications to Windows, you will
need the UXStyle Themepatch to enable the feature but seeing that files
have not been released yet, there is not much you can do at this time.
Once the theme is available, we will write up a tutorial about how to
enable 'Aero Glass' on Windows 10. And when the theme is ready for
everyone to use, it will be "100% same as in Win7", according to those
who are making it.
- Adobe Illustrator on the Surface Pro 3 redefines content
creation - Adobe showed off what is possible when you combine
the Surface with Adobe's latest CC experience with Illustrator. While
we could explain it all here, the video above shows what happens when
you put down the mouse and utilize other styles of input. The video is
quite impressive in showing how the Pro 3 is truly a digital canvas and
not simply a screen that uses a pen for input. With the ability to
smudge lines with your finger and even flick paint onto a canvas from a
Windows Phone, this is cross-device collaboration at its best.
- Firefox is planning a 64-bit browser - Firefox is today
available only in a 32-bit version. With both Chrome and Internet
Explorer offering 64-bit versions, Mozilla seems to have fallen behind
in the browser race. Until now, that is. The company has just announced
on MozillaWiki,
that they are planning to release a 64-bit version next year for
Windows. This is apparently after several years of experimenting with
64-bit software. The Mozilla blog also states that they are
implementing a 64-bit version, partially in case Microsoft decides to
retire 32-bit in the release of Windows 10. Another focus is to stay
relevant in the browser based gaming industry.
- Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Bend Test - You might have heard
about the bending problem with the Apple iPhone 6 Plus. Samsung also
knows about it. And the South Korean company appears to be wasting no
time to show off that their own big device, the Samsung
Galaxy Note 4, is non-bendable
- Sprint Ups Business Shared Data Plans to 800GB - Sprint
has again doubled
the size of shared data plans it offers to business customers.
Early this week, Sprint increased its Business Share Plan data
allotments by a factor of two. Now, it has doubled them again.
Businesses can put up to 50 lines on plans with 240GB, 320GB, or 400GB
for $400, $540, and $675, respectively. Businesses can put up to 100
lines on shared data plans with 600GB or 800GB for $1,010 and $1,350,
respectively. The doubled Business Share Plans are available through
October 31.
- Boost Mobile to Begin iPhone 6 and 6 Plus Sales Oct. 17 - Boost
Mobile today said it will offer the Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6
Plus beginning October 17. Boost is charging, in general, about $100
less than Apple is for the iPhones. Boost is selling the iPhone 6 for
$550, $650, and $750 for the 16-, 64-, and 128-GB models, respectively,
and the 6 Plus for $650, $750, and $850 for the 16-, 64-, and 128-GB
models, respectively. Boost is a prepaid carrier operated by Sprint. It
doesn't require contracts.
- Nokia HERE Maps Now Available to Samsung Galaxy Phones - Nokia
recently announced that its HERE Maps product is now available to
Samsung's Galaxy smartphones. HERE Maps allows users to download entire
countries or regions, which makes the maps available even when the
device is offline. Downloaded maps perform faster when panning and
zooming since new segments don't need to be loaded from an internet
connection. HERE Maps for Galaxy devices include free, voice-guided,
turn-by-turn directions. Users can plan routes via car, public
transport, or foot. Live traffic updates and real-time transit
schedules require a data connection. Nokia says maps are available for
about 200 countries with turn-by-turn directions available in about
100. Transit maps are available in 750 metro areas across 40 different
countries, with more being added all the time. HERE Maps can be found
in the Samsung Galaxy Apps Store directly on handsets and is being
offered first in beta form. It requires 1GB of RAM and Android 4.1 and
up.
- Virgin Mobile Adjusts Pricing, Intros $20 No-Data Option - Virgin
Mobile USA today made some changes
to its service plans. To start, the company added a new, low-cost plan
for $20 per month. It includes 300 voice minutes, unlimited messaging,
but no data. The $35 plan now gives customers a choice. They can opt
for unlimited voice minutes with 250MB of high-speed data, or 300 voice
minutes and up to 2.5GB of 3G/4G data access (speeds throttled once
allotment reached). Both $35 options include unlimited messaging.
Virgin also offers a $45 plan, which includes unlimited
minutes/messages and up to 1GB of data, and a $55 plan, which includes
unlimited minutes/messages and up to 3GB of high-speed data. The new
plans are available beginning today and can be paired with most devices
sold by Virgin. Customers may also choose to pay another $5 per month
for unlimited voice minutes to Canada and Mexico, or another $10 per
month for 1,000 minutes to more than 200 countries.
- Gmail for iOS Updated with Support for iPhone 6 / 6 Plus - Google
has updated its Gmail application for Apple's iOS devices. The new
version supports the screen sizes and resolutions of the iPhone 6 and
iPhone 6 Plus. Gmail is free to download
from the iTunes App Store.
- USB Attacks with Mobile Devices Using Kali NetHunter - The
Offensive Security folks are at it again. The builders of the popular
pentesting distribution Kali Linux have launched a new tool
called Kali NetHunter
for Android devices. The tool is a mobile distribution
designed to compromise systems via USB when installed and run on an
Android phone. The tool can masquerade as a keyboard via HID style
attacks, issue commands to open an admin shell amongst other attacks,
including BadUSB man-in-the-middle style attacks.
- JP Morgan sees 76 million customer accounts hacked - JP
Morgan has revealed it suffered a massive cyber attack on 76
million private and seven million business customers in the US. The
raid gathered account holders names and addresses but the bank said it
did not involve critical information such as account and social
security numbers. The bank said that "customers [whose accounts had
been hacked] are not liable for unauthorized transactions on their
account that they promptly alert the firm to". JP Morgan says it is
unlikely customers will need to take any action, such as changing their
passwords or account information.

Cheetah, which can only manage to hit speeds of up to 120 km/h. Of
course, that is fast. But the big cat can never reach the speeds with
which the fastest animal in the world travels. We are talking about the
peregrine falcon that is known to fly with speeds of up to 389 km/h.
Can't imagine how fast that is? You just have to think about the fastest
car in the world, which traveled at 435.5 km/h in a NASA facility

- Scientists ready to test lab-grown penises on men - Penises
grown in laboratories could soon be tested on men by scientists
developing technology to help people with congenital abnormalities, or
who have undergone surgery for aggressive cancer or suffered traumatic
injury. Researchers at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative
Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, are assessing engineered
penises for safety, function and durability. They hope to receive
approval from the US Food and Drug Administration and to move to human
testing within five years.
The penises would be grown using a patient's own cells to avoid the
high risk of immunological rejection after organ transplantation from
another individual.

The updates will be great, safe, secure, really care about your privacy, really interested in giving you the best features (like keyboard history shared with all interested M$ scum partners). Won't break anything, won't mess with any settings.. you will get to see wonderful new advertisement for shit you might also like adding, and best all they definitely won't gimp the updates so its not like you will need to get the next to fix the shit they broke the last update. etc ... it will be great and free, total freedom updates, won't cost a thing :D

Yeah there is - the ASLR space is WAAAAY bigger, so stack smashing/buffer overflow bugs are mostly eliminated. Plus (I believe) DEP is mandatory for 64bit apps.
And that's before you get to potential speed benefits..

Why the fuck is anyone paying M$ then.. if there design department is so fucking shit, that other people are doing the work of making there OS look more appealing than the flat square shit that it has become.

You do realize it's a browser, right? Not an OS.
few big tabs with lot's of content (flash, scripts, java etc + images, video and so on) can take up over 2GB and then you are screwed in 32bit browser since everything becomes sluggish, slow, unresponsive...I can make that happen just with few you tube videos open, and couple of regular sites that I have opened in tabs. Then I have to restart browser to clear the memory, or, use 64bit chrome and have no issues. IF mozzila had done like google did with chrome and had every tab had it's own process, then they wouldn't have to make 64bit browser since every tab would be able to allocate 2GB for itself, but they didn't so...
Csimbi | (03:52 PM CEST - Oct,13 2014 ) | I love Firefox and that's my browser of choice, so there is no need to find excuse for bad programming. It is what it is; this is what you get nowadays.
Koogle | (04:35 AM CEST - Oct,14 2014 ) | You can enable per tab process in Firefox...
of course it is shit, I mean its not anymore more shit that the same thing in DummIEs browser or google Chrape
per tab processes are slower to switch to (open a loads of sites, ctrl+tab to cycle through) use more memory per tab, and use more cpu overall.. It also causes more problems for those with tons of addons.
Not to mention windows shitty task manager still doesn't allow for applications to label separate spawned processes. Like opening a new tab for a website, go into OS task manager, there should be a way for main application to specify that the tab process is for <domain/url> etc ofc the main application can have its town built in tab task manager like. ...
but still M$ are fucking shit at really improving much of anything for the OS these years.
As for 64bit firefox not bothered I use 64bit win7 (but really no benefit to switching to 64bit browser personally, I do see the need for them to push development on it, in the past it has caused few plugins to break so I don't use it, only needs a few core plugin to break and that kills it for me)
My Firefox memory usage really ever goes above 1gb most the time, even now at 32 tabs open firefox is at ~500mb, just opened 10 youtube videos having them all playing, firefox only went up 100mb, while flashplayerplugin exe went to ~350mb.. still under 1gb total usage.
I really never seen how some can go over 2gb for browser memory, I can only guess that noscript really does nerf the bloat of scripts and flash ads etc that can be on most websites down to such a minimum.

and you are not counting in plugin container proccess which is 250+ MB I would assume....

gx-x | (07:12 PM CEST - Oct,14 2014 ) | Csimbi> There's only one process.
Look here.
I don't have to look, there is plugin container for firefox under background processes...always was...unless you turned it off (which can be done manualy) for some reason.
edit:
sorry, didn't mean to sound arrogant but idk what firefox you are using but I ALWAYS had plugin container (like, since 4.xx version)
| |
Csimbi | (07:27 PM CEST - Oct,14 2014 ) | That's for Flash only. Addons are under the main process.
gx-x | (07:34 PM CEST - Oct,14 2014 ) | didn't have any flash at the time screen shot was taken. I edited my last post. I can force to not use plugin container via about:config but by default - it is enabled.
quote: Hi RadRon, as the name implies, plugin-container.exe is used to run plugins. This was created around the time of Firefox 3.6.4 to isolate plugins from firefox.exe because they were responsible for a large percentage of Firefox crashes. Placing them in plugin-container.exe prevened misbehaved plugins from taking down your entire Firefox session (at least, in theory it should do that).
from mozzila staff...So, it's not for flash only obviously.
Csimbi | (10:58 PM CEST - Oct,14 2014 ) | I think you are confusing extensions with plugins.
See if this helps. | |
gx-x | (12:15 AM CEST - Oct,15 2014 ) | I am saying that if you have firefox, you should have plugin container running by default. Extensions and plugins are not the same, but some get treated the same way and are being handled by plugin container for the aforementioned reasons. Flash is a plugin, so is Java. Do you want to tell me that you are not using sites that use Java? Flash? (banners, adds, etc). Plugin container should be runing when you start firefox with one tab - about:blank. That's it. You have it disabled, which is not default. I am not saying it is wrong or bad for you, I am just saying that is not default state. I had flash crash on me many times and with container disabled I have to restart the whole browser so I prefer to not disable Plugin Cunt. I don't mind 200-300mb, it's nothing and it's not hindering firefox's memory limit on 32bit since it's a separate process. :)
Csimbi | (08:44 PM CEST - Oct,15 2014 ) | You should read the text on that link more carefully.
Plugin container.exe starts only when a content plugin needs it.
I use flashblock and adblock, so no rubbish gets loaded by default for me.
Though flashblock is no longer needed on GameGuru - it stopped displaying all flash content a few weeks back.
