TechNews - iPhone 6 costs $200 to build - tech
(hx) 11:55 PM CEST - Sep,27 2014
  • Intel Spending $6B Upgrading Israel Manufacturing Plant - Intel has brokered a deal with Israel to spend $6 billion upgrading its manufacturing plant there in exchange for tax breaks and other incentives.
  • Who makes the most reliable hard disk drives? - Backblaze, a cloud storage supplier, has just updated its January report on hard disk drive reliability, and the bad news is that 3TB drives are failing faster than expected.
  • Microsoft makes it easier to get Office for free, if you're a student - When Microsoft announced its Student Advantage program last year, it had one little drawback; it required the school to initiate the service. So, if you had a lazy IT administration, your school may never have qualified for the free software. But Microsoft is making a change today that will fix this shortcoming. Starting today, they are moving to a self-serve model for students as long as you enter a valid, school-provided email address.
  • Microsoft Offering 30GB of OneDrive Storage for Free - Microsoft has launched a limited promotion that will double OneDrive users' free storage to 30GB. Microsoft already offers 15GB of online storage for free. Those who sign into their OneDrive accounts between now and the end of September will see their free storage jump to 30GB. The offer is good for all users of OneDrive, including people using Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, and Windows Phone devices. Microsoft also offers incremental amounts of additional storage (usually 3GB) when smartphone/tablet owners choose to backup their camera roll to OneDrive. Users who already have more than 30GB of free OneDrive storage will receive the additional 15GB of storage, too.
  • Microsoft announces its Chromecast competitor for $60 - Microsoft has announced a new peripheral : the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter. Boring name aside, the device is a lot like a Chromecast and easily allows you to turn nearly any display into a second screen. The device will cost around $60 when it becomes available in October and we can see how corporations will likely move towards these devices. If an enterprise has a fleet of Miracast-enabled devices, these dongles are much cheaper than a projector since most conference rooms these days have LCDs up on the wall. Or, even if they have projectors, these devices can be used to easily connect wirelessly to them and reduce the hassle of using cords. You can check out the video in this post to get a better idea how the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter works but if you are familiar with a Chromecast, the idea is very similar - although Google's iteration does cost about half the price of Microsoft's device.
  • Microsoft Launches Miracast Stick - Miracast is now available for preorder for an October 31st shipping date at a pricey cost of $59.95.
  • First attacks using 'shellshock' Bash bug discovered - Within a day of the Bash bug dubbed 'shellshock' being disclosed, it appears that attackers are already looking for ways to use it for their advantage.
  • The Shellshock Bug, Explained In About Four Minutes - Remember Heartbleed? Well, this is probably worse. Here's a (somewhat simplified) explanation of what Shellshock actually is. Don't worry: I haven't included instructions on how to actually exploit it. The moral of the story is: keep your security patches up to date!
  • Apple pulls iOS 8.0.1 update due to issues with Touch ID and - Apple has pulled the latest update for iOS 8 after widespread reports from users that it managed to break Touch ID functionality and cellular service on their iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Many iPhone 6 users tweeted that iOS 8.0.1 rendered the Touch ID useless and that their phones could not connect to cellular networks since the update, which was made available over-the-air. Users whose handsets have been affected by this short-lived update should backup their data and restore their iPhone 6 or 6 Plus using the "Restore iPhone" feature in iTunes - although this will of course require connecting the device to a computer.
  • Apple Explains How to Revert to iOS 8.0 - Apple published directions on its support web site that iPhone 6 and 6 Plus owners can use to revert their devices to iOS 8 from iOS 8.0.1. The work-around restores cellular connectivity, which had been broken by the yanked iOS 8.0.1 update. It involves downloading the .ipsw file from Apple and using it in conjunction with iTunes on a computer to install a clean version of iOS 8. Apple also noted that it is preparing iOS 8.0.2, which will also resolve the cellular issue as well as resolve the bugs iOS 8.0.1 was meant to fix.
  • Apple Releases iOS 8.0.2 to Resolve iPhone Issues - Apple today made available iOS 8.0.2, an update that Apple says fixes an issue in iOS 8.0.1 that impacted cellular network connectivity and Touch ID on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. In addition to resolving the cellular connectivity issue, the update also repairs a number of other issues. For example, it fixes a bug so HealthKit apps can now be made available in the App Store. It also: addresses an issue where third party keyboards could become deselected when a user enters their passcode; fixes an issue that prevented some apps from accessing photos from the Photo Library; improves the reliability of the Reachability feature on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus; fixes an issue that could cause unexpected cellular data usage when receiving SMS/MMS messages; fixes an issue where ringtones were sometimes not restored from iCloud backups; and fixes a bug that prevented uploading photos and videos from Safari. iOS 8.0.2 is free to download and install over the air, or via iTunes.
  • Bent iPhones Have Some Competition - CONAN Highlight: Is your new Apple device not quite ramrod-straight? Try a rock-hard Samsung gadget instead. LOL
  • Apple iPhone 6 production costs start at $200 - The new iPhones are huge, their latest high-profile commercials made that pretty clear, and in every single way, they're better than the uber-hyped but somewhat underwhelming predecessors. The A8 chips are faster, the profiles are slimmer, security, health tracking, camera capabilities, everything's improved. It seems only logical therefore for Cupertino to charge a premium, especially as far as the "huge" 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus is concerned. Clearly, they're now spending more money on various components, starting with the always costly displays. Or are they? Are they really? Not according to IHS. Don't get us wrong, the so-called bill of materials is pricier for the 6 Plus. Just not so pricey to warrant the $100 gap between it and last year's 5s or the 2014 standard iPhone 6.  It's apparently costing Apple an extra $16 to produce the 6 Plus, parts and labor included, bringing the grand total to merely $216. That's for the variant packing 16 GB of internal storage space, which Apple sells at $749. Meanwhile, the highest-end model, equipped with 128 GB memory, has a BOM worth exactly $263 and a recommended retail price tag of $949. Anyone want to take the time to gauge the exact profit margins?
  • Video Allegedly Shows Chinese Mafia Infiltrating iPhone 6 Lines - Sleeping on the street, enduring abuse from police and angry Apple fanatics, humoring faux-enthusiasm from Apple store employees, and ending with back-alley hand-offs with suspicious characters - turns out waiting in line for a phone isn't as uneventful as you might think.
  • It Turns Out You Can Bend The iPhone 6 Plus With Your Bare Hands - Does the iPhone 6 Plus bend under pressure?
  • Apple Responds to Bent iPhone Issue - Apple today issued a statement concerning reports of bent iPhones. It said bent iPhones are "extremely rare" under normal use, and the company has only received nine such compliants from customers. Videos and images have spread across the internet in recent days depicting iPhones 6 Plus handsets that nave been bent. Apple said the device has undergone rigorous durability tests and consumers have no reason to worry.
  • Will It B(l)end: iPhone 6 Plus Vs. Galaxy Note 3 - The new, larger iPhone may not be able to stand up to peoples' pockets very well, but at least it survives for marginally longer in a high-powered blender.
  • Skype 5.5 for iOS8 Adds Support for Extensions - Skype has updated its iPhone application to version 5.5. The latest rendition of Skype takes advantage of extensions, which are a new feature of iOS8. The update lets Skype users answer voice and video calls from either the lock screen or the notification center, thanks to new UI tools. The same also applies to Skype messaging conversations. Skype is free to download from the iTunes App Store, though some calling features cost money to use.
  • Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 rolls out to Lumia 930, enabling Cortana - If you've got a Lumia 930, I've got some great news for you. The company has begun the rollout of its latest OS version, Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1, to its flagship handset, so grab your phone and hit the 'check for updates' button. The update is particularly exciting for those in the United Kingdom and China, as it will finally allow Cortana to work on the Lumia 930 in those markets.
  • Microsoft puts down Siri again in two new videos -  Microsoft has released two new Siri vs Cortana videos that, once again, show the shortcomings of Apple's digital assistant. This time around, Microsoft is focusing on Cortana's ability to check traffic based on your calendar and the built in reminders based on who you are talking to. You can check out both of the videos in this post but each are only 20 seconds long which might mean that these are not destined for the cable networks.
  • BlackBerry Shows Off the Passport for Mobile Pros - BlackBerry today fully revealed the Passport, its first smartphone to debut since February. The Passport has a unique shape, providing a large, square screen with a full, physical QWERTY keyboard below. The phone has a steel frame that BlackBerry claims lends it great strength. The screen measures 4.5 inches across the diagonal and has 1,440 x 1,440 pixels. BlackBerry says the square aspect ratio helps fit more content across the screen when compared to 16:9 displays. The company took special care to develop the keyboard, which it claims is faster and more reliable than software keyboards. The keyboard is touch-enabled and lets users brush their fingers over the keys to scroll through information on the screen. Users can also flick up on the keyboard to use next-word suggestions, and swipe from right to left on the keyboard to delete the full last word. Under the hood, the Passport has a 2.2GHz Snapdragon processor with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. It supports microSD memory cards and has a 3,450mAh battery. The phone comes with a 13-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization. The device runs BlackBerry OS 10.3 with support the Amazon App Store for applications. Alongside the Passport, BlackBerry also introduced BlackBerry Assistant, a voice-activated tool similar to Siri, Google Now, and Cortana that can perform select actions on the Passport. BlackBerry claims Assistant is more powerful than rivals because it can access information behind corporate firewalls. BlackBerry is selling the Passport directly to U.S. consumers from its web site. The phone costs $599 and is being sold without a contract. It is compatible with HSPA/LTE networks, such as those operated by AT&T and T-Mobile
  • BlackBerry Passport Goes On Sale Weds. for $599 - BlackBerry CEO John S. Chen confirmed it will begin to sell the Passport smartphone on Wednesday. BlackBerry has provided few details about the device so far. It features a square shape that includes both a 4.5-inch touchscreen and a physical QWERTY keyboard. It also features a large antenna to aid reception and boasts 36 hours of continuous use. The phone, the first BlackBerry has released in a year, will run BlackBerry OS 10.3. It will be available in Toronto, London, and Dubai on Wednesday, and "a lot of places will have it" within two weeks. Chen didn't specify when it will go on sale in the U.S., but it will be sold directly to consumers, unsubsidized for $599.

  • Confirmed: Water Once Flowed On Mars - A new study based on observations last September by the Curiosity rover on Mars has confirmed that pebble-containing slabs of rock found on the Martian surface were part of an ancient streambed. • Star Wars Episode 7 - Scenes Being Filmed - This is an aerial video of a scene being shot for the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII. Apologies for the camera spinning round a few times (we managed to lose contact between the drone and receiver unit twice during this clip). In this video you can see rebel pilots & crew running around the main core of the base. This looks like they are rushing to evacuate the base for one reason or another. Possibly they are facing an imminent attack, or are rushing to get their ships launched to go and assist in a battle somewhere. Oh, and don't forget.... Many Bothan's died to bring you this information.
