TechNews - Microsoft to cut up to 18,000 jobs - tech|
(hx) 08:07 PM CEST - Jul,18 2014 |
- MediaTek Takes on Snapdragon 810 with New 64-bit Chip - MediaTek
today took the wraps off its newest flagship processor chip for
high-end phones. The MT6795 is a SoC (system on chip) combining an LTE
radio with a 64-bit, 8-core processor at speeds up to 2.2 GHz. It
supports displays up to 1600 x 2560. It also supports display refresh
rate of 120 Hz for extra-smooth motion, and slow-motion video capture
at 480 fps in full HD. The company has had little traction with phones
bound for U.S. shores in recent years. According to Mohit Bhushan, Head
of U.S. Business Development, the company is working to change that by
having its processors certified directly by U.S. network operators. The
MT6795 is currently undergoing that certification, and the company
plans to have the chip in a device shipping in the U.S. next year. The
chip competes with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810.
- Leak suggests PCIe 3.0 coming to next-gen Intel chipsets -
VR Zone's Chinese site has posted
a series of official-looking slides indicating that next year's
"100 Series" chipsets will support PCI Express 3.0. According to the
slides, the flagship member of the family will be the Z170, which
reportedly has up to 20 lanes of PCIe Gen3 connectivity. That
sounds like an awful lot, but I count only six lanes reserved
exclusively for PCIe slots and devices. Most of the lanes appear to be
shared with the chipset's USB, SATA, and Ethernet interfaces.
- Gigabyte and HyperX Break World Record - HyperX, a
division of Kingston Technology Company, Inc., the independent world
leader in memory products, today announced that GIGABYTE TECHNOLOGY Co.
Ltd., overclocked
HyperX memory to an astounding frequency of 4620MHz, the fastest
memory speed in the world. The previous world record was also achieved
in partnership with GIGABYTE and HyperX during Computex 2014. On June
30, GIGABYTE overclockers "HiCookie" and "Sofos1990" achieved the
world's fastest memory frequency using one 4GB HyperX Predator 2933MHz
DDR3 module (not yet available) on GIGABYTE's Z97-SOC FORCE LN2
motherboard. The true, live frequency was accurately read via
oscilloscope, monitored by an official HWBOT representative, and then
submitted on HWBOT.org.
- LG Introduces A Very Flexible 18-Inch Display - We
haven't heard about curved or flexible displays for a while now, but LG
appears to have been busy with panels that are flexible, rollable, and
transparent. The company has just introduced an 18-inch OLED panel
that is flexible enough to be rolled into a tube that's just 3cm
across. The new panel, which has a resolution of 1,200 x 810, features
a new polyamide film on its back (and not the typical plastic)
- Microsoft Downsizes, Kills off Nokia X - Microsoft has announced
a sweeping company-wide re-organization that includes major changes to
the mobile device business acquired from Nokia. Of Microsoft's 18,000
layoffs today, 12,500 are within the former Nokia units. Microsoft will
combine the smartphone and feature phone units, with the feature phone
operations continuing "for maximum efficiency with a smaller team."
Nokia's Android-based Nokia X lineup will be abandoned. Select future
models will be reworked to run Windows Phone to address new low price
points for Lumia. Existing Nokia X phones will be supported, but the
software will not appear in any new phones. The company will focus
primarily on Windows-Phone-powered Lumia phones, and tablets. In an
open email to employees, Stephen Elop explained that "the role of
phones within Microsoft is different than it was within Nokia. Whereas
the hardware business of phones within Nokia was an end unto itself,
within Microsoft all our devices are intended to embody the finest of
Microsoft's digital work and digital life experiences, while accruing
value to Microsoft's overall strategy."
- Nokia Rolling Out Windows Phone 8.1 To Lumias - Nokia
today began rolling out automatic
updates to Windows Phone 8.1 for all Lumia devices that currently
have Windows Phone 8. The update includes all new Windows Phone 8.1
features from Microsoft, plus several new enhancements specific to
Lumia devices. Lumia devices will gain updated Nokia Camera apps, plus
Nokia Device Hub, which intelligently tracks accessories used with the
device. The Lumia 1520 and Icon phones will gain Nokia Rich Recording
and Dolby surround sound video capture, plus Screen Share. Standard
Windows Phone 8.1 features include a more customizable home screen,
Action Center quick settings, Wi-Fi Sense for automatically connecting
to free hotspots, and the Cortana voice assistant. The update will roll
out to all eligible devices "in the coming weeks."
- Watch Microsoft's demo of Skype's real-time translation
service - The demo got off to a bumpy start, but for the most
part, it was a seriously impressive demonstration of real-time
voice and language translation. Microsoft said that they hope to have
this feature in public beta later this year, and the use cases for the
tool are quite obvious; the demo was translating from German to English
and English to German.
- IBM Investing $3 Billion into New Computer Design - IBM
is investing $3 Billion dollars over the next five years to
explore and develop computers that mimic human brain functions: a
cognitive computer.
- Three Problems Computers Can Never Solve - New Scientist
has a new video
out today that explains three problems that computers can never
solve.
- COMCAST - The Most Frustrating And Painful Phone Call - Ryan
Block, who works at AOL and at one time was Engadget's editor-in-chief
and is co-founder of gdgt, was moving and decided he
wanted to cancel his Comcast service and start at his new home with
a different provider.
- Want To Hear A Satisfying Noise? Clean Your Vinyls
With Wood Glue - The peeling is the first good noise, and hearing
your records properly is the second good noise.
- Material so dark that it can't be processed by the
human eye - Carbon nanotubes are often touted as one of the
potential successors to modern-day silicon but apparently that's not
the only thing they excel at. A British company by the name of Surrey
NanoSystems has created a "strange, alien" material using carbon
nanotubes that's described as the darkest in the world. Vantablack,
as it's being called, is constructed by layering a sheet of
aluminum foil with carbon nanotubes. The resulting material can absorb
all but 0.035 percent of visible light - a new world record. It's
actually so dark that the human eye cannot correctly process and
understand what it is seeing. The fact that it doesn't reflect back
much light makes it impossible to detect shapes and contours, making it
look like an apparent abyss. Leeds University professor of color
science and technology Stephen Westland said many people think black is
the absence of light but unless you are looking at a black hole, nobody
has actually seen something which has no light. This new material, he
noted, is almost as close to a black hole as we could imagine.
Actual applications are more serious, enabling astronomical cameras,
telescopes and infrared scanning systems to function more effectively.
Then there are the military uses that the material's maker, Surrey
NanoSystems, is not allowed to discuss.
- New Footage Of That Bizarre Hole In The Middle Of Siberia - Although
the clip is in Russian, you still get to see some
interesting aerial shots of the hole recently discovered in
Siberia. Now that researchers have reached the site, we will hopefully
get a better idea of exactly how the phenomenon came to be.
- The First Teaser For 'American Horror Story' Season 4 - Continuing
with their winning formula of grotesque and supernatural horror, "American
Horror Story" teases their fourth season titled 'Freakshow' which
appears to take place in a carnival.
- The 'Doctor Who' Series 8 Trailer Is Here - New Doctor,
new monsters and old enemies.
- MATADOR (Evo 2014 Vega Short Film) - Evolution
2014 - the greatest fighting tournament - is currently under way
and its second day ended with this brand new live-action short film
based on Street Fighter. This film focuses on the life of Vega (also
known as Balrog in Japan) and - surprisingly enough - it is a great SF
film. Up until M. Bison (also known as Vega in Japan) appears.

Shirow, creator of Ghost in the Shell comes Applessed
Alpha, the latest tale in his saga of the two future warriors
Deunan Knute and Briareos Hecatonchires. This latest outing provides an
insight to part of the Appleseed origin story as the pair search for
the last hope for mankind, the city of Olympus. The movie is directed
by Shinji Aramaki, the genius behind the 2004 version of Appleseed.
Appleseed Alpha will release on Bluray on July 22nd, 2014.

cinematic history. Now, Besson directs Scarlett Johansson in Lucy, an

who turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless
warrior evolved beyond human logic.
- 12 Monkeys Trailer SyFy (HD) Teaser Promo - Syfy is
reimagining Terry Gilliam's sci-fi classic 12 Monkeys as television
show, and it's just released the first trailer for it. The series
appears to retain the film's twisting time-travel arcs that find its
characters journeying back to the past to prevent the planet from
reaching a devastated future. This trailer doesn't make the show appear
quite as promising as you might hope, but things are still early: the
series isn't going to premiere until January 2015. Starring in the show
is Aaron Stanford (X2), Amanda Schull (Pretty Little Liars), Noah Bean
(Damages), and Kirk Acevedo (Fringe), and the first season is planned
to include 13 episodes.
