TechNews - Apple Gets Patent On A Rectangle - tech|
| (hx) 10:55 AM EST - Nov,11 2012 |
- Core i7-3970X Extreme Review - Intel
didn't have to launch the Core i7-3970X. Its -3960X was already the
fastest single-socket workstation processor you could buy. But, in the
year that has passed since Sandy Bridge-E first debuted, Intel also
introduced its Ivy Bridge architecture. Better per-cycle performance
gave enthusiasts something to consider: do you save some money by
buying a quad-core Ivy Bridge-based processor, or splurge on an older
architecture for its higher core count and more generous PCI Express
connectivity? With the Core i7-3970X, Intel gives power
users with money to spend a little more reason to lean in favor of
Sandy Bridge-E. An extra 200 MHz under full load is reflected
in apps like Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Autodesk 3ds Max, Microsoft
Visual Studio, and Maxon Cinema 4D. A 100 MHz-higher Turbo Boost bump
helps iTunes, PowerPoint, and Lame.
- NVIDIA: People Buying Tablets Instead of Cheap PCs
- Thursday during a conference call, Nvidia Chief Executive
Jen-Hsun Huang said that consumers are turning to tablets
instead of purchasing cheap PCs, even more so now that
Microsoft's own Surface tablet and Windows RT are now available on the
market. He indicated that consumers are beginning to realize that a
top-notch tablet with solid features is better than a cheap PC with
sub-par components.
- Apple Gets Patent On A Rectangle With Rounded
Corners - Someone at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
needs to be kicked in the nuts. Seriously. I'm not kidding.
The US Patent and Trademark Office issued patent no. D670,286 to Apple friday and it really does
cover the outer edge shape of a device. There's no other way
to look at it. As we've explained before, the scope of a design patent
is defined by the drawings, and the solid lines are what counts - the
dashed lines are just there for context. The 'D286 patent has a lot of
gratuitous context but just a single solid line defining what is being
protected.
- Target Black Friday sale includes Retina iPad with
$60 gift card for $499 - Black Friday is quickly
approaching, and if you've been setting aside a few bucks here and
there for a chance at grabbing cheap tech then maybe an iPad with
Retina bundled with a $60 gift card for $499.99 from Target will empty
the pig and satisfy your urge for a new toy. Wal-Mart will, too, have
an iPad sale, but it's not the one with Retina. Rather,
Wal-Mart will be selling the iPad 2 for $399.99 and will come with a
$75 gift card. Wal-Mart will open early, and promises that
the iPad 2 will be in stock for at least an hour.
- IE10 Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 differences
detailed - The official Windows Phone developer blog
goes in deep with a list of all the new features put into IE10 for
Windows Phone 8. Visually, the browser handles effects such as 3D
transforms, shadows for both text and boxes in websites and support for
more fonts, including TypeKit from Adobe. In terms of web page layouts,
IE10 for Windows Phone 8 supports features like multiple columns,
positioned floats and more.
- Skype to replace Windows Live Messenger in 2013 - Microsoft
has confirmed
that Windows Live Messenger will be retired worldwide in the first
quarter of next year "with the exception of China where Messenger will
continue to be available".
- Kinect Controlled Holographic Optical Tweezers -
This is an example of our HoloHands program
which allows a user to control a holographic optical tweezers system
using a Kinect. In this example two individual trapping spots are
controlled by the hands of the user, and a simple range of
functionality - moving, locking in place and picking up again of the
particles is shown.
- AT&T prices Windows 8 Samsung ATIV tablet
at $799.99 - AT&T will officially start selling a
Windows 8-based tablet device
alongside its iPad and Android products later this week. The wireless
carrier said that the Samsung ATIV Smart PC will go on sale in its
stores on Friday, November 9th for $799.99. Unfortunately, that price
also means that AT&T customers will have to pay the full amount
for
the tablet up front, rather than have it be subsidized under a two year
contract like AT&T's many smartphones. The 11.6 inch tablet,
which
comes with a detachable keyboard, will have a version of Intel's Clover
Trail processor, with a clock speed of 1.5GHz. It will also have 64 GB
of storage.
- AT&T Offering $100 Off Tablets - Beginning
yesterday, AT&T has put a deal together to take $100 off any tablet from the
AT&T store or online store. Of course with any great deal,
there is always a slight catch: The $100 deal is contingent upon a new
2-year contract.
- Here Comes the $13 Single-Board Computer - The
workshop
is based on the low cost, expandable Stellaris LaunchPad Evaluation
Kit. The LaunchPad board features an 80MHz LM4F120H5QR microcontroller,
on-board emulation and BoosterPack XL format expansion pins. The
LM4F120H5QR microcontroller has 256KB of flash memory, 32KB of RAM, 2KB
of EEPROM, two 12-bit analog to digital converters, a USB 2.0 device
port, a hibernation module, other serial connectivity and flexible
GPIO.

- Microsoft's Major Breakthrough In Speech
Translation Technology - Chief Research Officer Rick Rashid
demonstrates a speech recognition breakthrough via
machine translation that converts his spoken English words
into computer-generated Chinese language. The breakthrough is patterned
after deep neural networks and significantly reduces errors in spoken
as well as written translation.
- Iran accused of torturing blogger to death - Iran has been accused of torturing to death
a blogger who was arrested last week for criticising the Islamic
republic on Facebook. Iran's cyber-police, known as Fata, picked up
Sattar Beheshti from his home in Robat-Karim last week on suspicion of
"acting against the national security" because of his online activities
on social networking sites. He was then taken to Tehran's notorious
Evin prison. Beheshti's family heard no news of him until Wednesday,
when they were phoned by prison officials asking them to collect his
body from the Kahrizak coroner's office. The opposition has accused
Iranian officials of torturing the 35-year-old blogger to death.
- Adobe Has A BS Detector - What

- Jurassic Park 3D - Official Trailer - Based
on Michael Crichton's novel, adapted by Crichton himself and
screenwriter David Koepp. Universal is re-releasing Jurassic
Park in 3D in theaters starting on April 5th, 2013 next
year.
- Terminator-Like Carbon Fiber Prosthetic Arm - This
is one of the most amazing prosthetic arms I've ever
seen.
- AVGN: The Movie Trailer - The
film is inspired by the famous Atari video game burial of 1982.
Atari produced a game based on the biggest blockbuster movie of that
year, E.T., and rushed it to meet the deadline for the Christmas
shopping season. It was a commercial failure and millions of unsold
game cartridges were buried in a desert landfill in Alamogordo, New
Mexico. Coincidentally, it's not too far from Roswell, the landing site
of a different kind of E.T.
- Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome Debuts on
the Internet - YouTube Channel Machinima
will be hosting a 10 episode feature of the Sci-Fi drama
Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome. New episodes will launch each
Friday in November.

- La Luna - Pixar - La
Luna is the timeless fable of a young boy coming of age in
the most peculiar circumstances. Tonight is the very first time his
Papa and Grandpa are taking him to work. In an old wooden boat they row
far out to sea, and with no land in sight, they stop and wait. A big
surprise awaits the little boy as he discovers his family's most
unusual line of work. Should he follow the example of his Papa or his
Grandpa? Will he be able to find his own way amidst their conflicting
opinions and timeworn traditions?
- WARM BODIES - Trailer - A funny new
twist on a classic love story, WARM
BODIES is a poignant tale about the power of human connection.
After a zombie epidemic, R (a highly unusual zombie) encounters Julie
(a human survivor), and rescues her from a zombie attack. Julie sees
that R is different from the other zombies, and as the two form a
special relationship in their struggle for survival, R becomes
increasingly more human -- setting off an exciting, romantic, and often
comical chain of events that begins to transform the other zombies and
maybe even the whole lifeless world.

Next time they're going to claim that they invented the wheel.

This was easy to guess as Skype has been continually downgraded (i.e. dumbified) over the last year.

Whilst it is very true for general tablet stuff; web browsing searching, music, movies and gaming = insta fun! The tablets blow a PC completely out the water with GPS, sat nav and tethering to your phone for on the go internet anywhere, without lugging a netbook, laptop etc.
Obviously when it comes to buying online (security) and doing more detailed work and serious gaming, the PC is always king. But that's sitting in a permanent/long place to do that. Work, train commute, home etc.
A good laptop doesn't come under 'cheap pc' and is a poor sweeping statement.
Also it comes under a 'no shit, sherlock.......' statement. Tablets, mobile phones, consoles and PCs, all have their place in our lives, just that people are no longer 'tied' long term to them. We no longer upgrade regularly and what we play on or use. that is what has changed. Go on vacation and commute, phones/tablets ebook readers are now the norm. Stay at home and the bigger gear comes out.
| Tom | (09:04 AM EST - Nov,12 2012 ) | Comparatively speaking, at home I use my tablet more than my PC. I game on my PC when I have time to sit behind my PC and game. My laptop has about 3 inches of dust on it because what I can do on my laptop I can do way more efficiently on my tablet.
EDIT: Apple is a piece of shit as is the US Patent office. Allowing this patent just shows how F'd up the Patent office is.

yea, that's nice. Then some of those people will want to print out their work or some papers for schools, maybe even photos, and they will plug in their printer only to discover that android doesn't have a driver for it.
Now, don't get me wrong, I agree that tablets are great and can replace a cheap PC, for a housewife or something, but some people are still better off with laptop or cheap PC.
And you can buy cheap PC pretty damn cheap, like under 100$, whilst a tablet for under a 100 isn't really THE tablet and cannot replace almost anything save for maybe a browser. Still, I wouldn't be comfortable browsing for hours on a 7" screen

Yea I think the point is that laptops are becoming marginalized as hardware specs for mobiles and tablets get better (dual core range or better nowadays if you pay for it). PC sales will be fine but laptops which became a huge market will see a decline. The way I see it it costs them less to put out a tablet and charge laptop prices so it's a win for them.
I've got a nook color with cm7.2 that cost me a hundred bucks last year. It has mediocre hardware specs but runs everything fine even today. There's even a JB rom out for it now. The only other interesting thing in the mobiles is being able to run ubuntu or windows on them so you can either use it as a ghetto pc or copy your desktop between the devices with ease.

I hate browsing with a tablet or mobile. The only ones I use have apps that format it for me like reddit apps etc. Primary use is for nav or ereading reddit browsing whilst on the toilet or couch. Mantano reader is quite nice.
Once they get the hardware a little better on mobiles and tablets (pretty close now but price point is set way to high) we can start seeing useful mobile OS's like ubuntu even windows.
| Stumpus | (08:27 AM EST - Nov,15 2012 ) | I have a Google Nexus 7 16gb and an Asus EeePad Transformer Pad TF300 10.1 inch Tablet with Keyboard/Dock, 32gb. Both tablets are Asus and have Nvidia Tegra 3 Quad Core processors.
They can seriously play some gorgeous high res games and are superb for general laptop work and some intensive tasks. The Prime for eg I can print wireless, dock to external HDDs, full sized SD card reader and full sized USB ports alongside micro HDMI. The keyboard is a charging dock as well as a very good keyboard and has useful shortcut keys applicable to the OS and interface. They both are Jelly Bean too. With a good 15hrs battery life.
Buy once and buy the best that you can, is my motto.

tbh, for 600 euros I can buy a much better laptop than that Asus transformer, thou not as fancy but much more capable and a bit less portable but...Well, it's a matter of preference, but knowing you, you probably have a beast laptop too :P
| Stumpus | (09:10 AM EST - Nov,15 2012 ) | Csimbi> The best is a PC.
No it's not. For portability nothing beats a tablet. You hardly stick a pc in your pocket and play games on a commute or check street view for where your going or for somewhere to stay/eat etc?
And yes, a nexus can squeeze into a jacket pocket.

o.O what are you? A giant? XD I guess I am a midget, even a 4" phone in my pocket feels...large.
| Csimbi | (12:44 PM EST - Nov,15 2012 ) | Portability? I don't really play anywhere else than at home, or, at the airplane or at the hotel room. So, again, a PC (a laptop).
I guess while you're a kid, it's different, but if you take your gaming everywhere you go, you'll have no life.
Why'd I want to stuff anything in my pocket? I like my pockets empty.
Yes, I am fairly tall (with large palms).

A large pocket hehe. I don't know though I have a case for the nook and it's plenty fine. Tablets in the 7" range seem like the best compromise on size to me. It's like lugging around a bible as a missionary 24/7 ^^.
