Shadowrun Online Kickstarter update + video - movie
(hx) 10:08 PM EDT - Jul,25 2012
Cliffhanger Productions announced an additional payment model last night, right in the middle of its current Kickstarter project to bring Shadowrun Online to fans everywhere. Today, Executive Producer Jan Wagner released a new developer video detailing that new payment model. Looks like the pay model for Shadowrun Online MMORPG will be pretty much the same as how the Guild Wars titles do theirs. You will have to buy the game once (or pledge $25 or higher on Kickstarter) and that is it. You will be able to pay as long and as much as you would like without having to pay anything else like monthly subscription fees. A bit of a bold move since not a lot of MMORPG titles have been successful with that pay model outside of the Guild Wars series. There will be a free-to-play model as well for those who don't want to buy the game. The second part of the update is the unveiling of some prototype in-game footage. The entire MMORPG will be developed using Unity3D which is one of the reasons we will be able to play it on our tablets:

I must admit I'm somewhat impressed by the video. It's like Jagged Alliance with a Syndicate atmosphere. I've still got an original copy of the Shadowrun hardcover rule book tucked away in the attic somewhere, (assuming the wife hasn't thrown it out or rats haven't eaten it), and fondly remember running RPG campaigns in the setting. It is in many ways the the closest translation of Gibson's version of cyberpunk into the gaming world. Maybe this one will be better than the series of craptastic console games which have plagued the IP for two decades.
