Netflix Hikes Prices, Adds DVD-Only Plan - briefly|
(hx) 03:10 AM CEST - Jul,13 2011 | Netflix today announced that they are splitting their unlimited DVD and streaming plans into two distinct services, with the result being that customers who wish to maintain both will see their monthly bill go up by 60%!
The company's new $7.99-per-month plan, offered at a new page on the Netflix site, allows users to have one DVD out a time on an unlimited basis. According to a Netflix salesperson who spoke to CNET today, those who want to include Blu-ray discs in the new plan will need to pay $9.99 per month. Internet streaming of video content is not included. If customers want two DVDs out at a time, they will need to pay $11.99 per month.
Netflix also announced today that those who want both DVD rentals and unlimited streaming will need to start paying more. Instead of paying the current $9.99-per-month fee for unlimited streaming and unlimited DVD rentals, customers will need to pay $15.98 a month for a single DVD out a time, paying almost 60 percent more for the same service. The company said the fee includes $7.99 for unlimited streaming and $7.99 for its new bare-bones plan. Those who want two DVDs out a time will need to pay $19.98 per month.

Csimbi | (03:24 AM CEST - Jul,13 2011 ) | So much about purchasing the same content only once...
Baconnaise | (04:20 PM CEST - Jul,13 2011 ) | Ok so they now have a service plan that makes them like Hulu Plus and another that's like Red Box vending rentals but for a monthly fee. I doubt I'm the only person with ondemand service (comcrap). I pay around 150 dollars a month for every single movie channel and channel comcast offers. This includes 50mbit internet unlimited phone and the cable service with dual tuner dvr (allows any box in the house to watch recorded shows from a single box). Why would I need netflix? If I really wanted a movie that bad I can pay the five dollars to watch it early or I can wait like I always do and get on the movie channels of which I have access to every single one of them. This doesn't include the fact that I can visit any warez site and download the cam telesync or r5 release if we're lucky earlier and get a glimpse.
What market is this for exactly? Seems like it's for the heavy laptop users like college kids.

I'd say Canadians are most likely to join something like this because the monopoly cable providers like Bell and Rogers offer garbage and other shit that costs a lot. With NetFlix you can get the best of both worlds. Get a basic cable package and then Netflix for your movies and whatever else. Of course our monopolies Rogers and Bell immediately downgraded all their internet packages bandwidth limits. Canada has a big problem when it comes to choice of cable providers and nobody is doing jack shit about it.
$150 for cable/movies and then you pay more for other shit? Are you fucking insane?
Sabot | (05:00 PM CEST - Jul,13 2011 ) | What an archaic over-priced POS!!
I have cable and catch-up on films/series etc,etc. +50mbps broadband.
But for a pathetic few quid per month i have blu-ray/3D films and games on all formats + streaming to my PS3 and internet TV, Blu-ray player, laptop.
We've had this luxury for YEARS! it's called LOVEFILM and it's never jumped in price like NetFIX!
It quotes itself as the 'world's leading Internet subscription service for enjoying movies and TV shows', yet charges rediculous prices!
For 9.99 i can have 2 films at home or a mix of film and games + free internet streaming of thousands of films.
quote: Netflix also announced it is separating its unlimited streaming and unlimited DVD plans in the U.S. to better reflect the costs of each and to give members a choice: a streaming-only plan, a DVD-only plan or the option to subscribe to both.
With this change, Netflix will no longer be offering unlimited plans that include both streaming and DVDs by mail. The unlimited streaming plan will remain at $7.99 a month. The price for getting both unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs will be $15.98 a month ($7.99 + $7.99).
For new Netflix members, the changes will be effective immediately. For existing members, the new pricing will start for charges on or after September 1.

First off, you cannot stream to your PS3 everything, copy protection there dude. I stopped streaming jack all with my PS3. Only a HTPC is gonna do that these days. PS3 is more restrictive these days than ever. PS3 for streaming is shit now.
Netflix you can watch anything you want, as much as you want and they even cut bandwidth requirements. It's not just limited to movies either they are carrying more and more TV series full seasons. While I am not a fan of Netflix, it is a decent service.
Wanna know real ripoffs Stumpus? My cable company Rogers, asks for $25+ a month for a shitty movie channel that plays nothing but old garbage. Then they segmented other channels with crap on it, then there is PPV. All shit. Or how about that dude spending $150 for cable and movies?! I'm sorry that is a utter fucking joke. That's called, "Hey I'm a n00b and got money to burn, watch me!".
I think Netflix is a way better solution for the non-technically inclined/lazy bastards. The only thing that beats it hands-down is a LAN+Internet based HTPC. I run XBMC and all devices grab media from my main server in my basement both hardwired and wireless. You can't get better than that.

Obviously you are unaware the PS3 has been jailbroken, allowing for custom firmware and the RETAIL signing of CUSTOM MADE PKG's. You can stream video, music, etc.
Google "Showtime". It is already in version 3.
I can stream EVERYTHING up to 720p over my home network, with SOME very high bitrate MKV 1080p stuttering --- due to the Cell processor, and program itself. It will be fixed out once they improve the code for full 1080p compatibility.
PS3 is the one of the cheapest computers you can buy right now. OtherOS has also be restored via custom firmwares =<fw 3.55.

150 is a decent deal where I live. Phone without caller ID voicemail and all that and no long distance is about 40-45 dollars after taxes. Internet the only other option in my area is a fiber to the pole area thing and then they run copper so you only get 10mbit at best. They bundle other services like phone and tv with the fiber service but it's the same price and seems kind of crappy (family member has it).
I do agree with you and the other posters about the degraded cable service. They have many movies (some I actually like) that are too old and they recycle too much crap. Part of the problem I wager is every one is trying to do their own thing. I subscribe to HBo for example I can watch everything on the website yet my ondemand might only have one season of a certain show. I'm sure it's not totally comcast's fault here or roger's.

I do the same thing with my HTPC I just download the latest bluray rips on a warez site and enjoy :). Gotta love how cheap one and two terabyte drives are these days.
Am I the oddball here with over three hundred dvds? I don't feel like replacing them and couldn't if I tried :(.
Sabot | (03:00 PM CEST - Jul,14 2011 ) | @Tom;
Everything that is quoted as streamable on LoveFilm, is viewable on PS3.
That's why i posted it. For our 9.99 we get 4 films/games blu ray per month + 2 free streamable movies.
As for cable, we pay just over a ton for about 170 channels, all movies and sports in HD and 3D, telephone, Thousands of catch-up progs and music, TiVo 500gb box (record 3 channels and watch a 4th) a V+ HD 160gb box in the bedroom (record 2 watch 3rd) modem + router and 50mbps fibre broadband. It's a shit-hot service and sometime next year we'll be on 100mbps -all uncapped as well.

Yes I am aware of Jailbreak. Are you aware that without having to create other accounts, use other sites you cannot play online with Jailbreak? I got 2 kids that play on the PS3, so jailbreak is no good for me. It's not feasible and plus I buy games for the kids online regularly. Yes I used the OtherOS when it was on my box and I was streaming and doing a lot of other things. I wish Sony would get their heads out of their arse and re-enable it.

Ya you definitely have a better cable offering than we do. Enjoy. I download my movies and I have over a dozen good internet channels all working through XBMC on my HTPC. Like Baconnaise says, I got a lot of DVD's, probably close to 200 and then I got about 50-60 Blurrays and all have been ripped to stream over my network via hard wire and wireless. I am going to switch internet providers in the next few months to one that costs less, has same speed but 3 times the bandwidth. Then I'll be able to get a lot more media and satisfy every need I have.

What area do you reside at? Comcast in my South Florida area upgraded to 50mbit a year or two ago. I've already gotten calls and emails about it being upgraded to 120mbit by the end of next year. I'm not in a big metro area like Orlando or anything but live in an upper middle area.
