The State of DirectX 11 -Image Quality&Performance - tech|
(hx) 11:43 PM CEST - May,12 2010 | HotHardware.com takes a look at the state of DirectX 11:
We've tested five of the earliest available DirectX 11 titles and we're happy to report that the situation this time around is looking quite favorable for early adopters. While we observed performance hits when switching to DirectX 11 from DirectX 9 in all five games, we also observed a noticeable corresponding image quality improvement. The drop in performance for DirectX 11 in our tests can be attributed to the added image quality. Effects like tessellation, screen-space ambient occlusion, advanced post processing and DX11 exclusive anti-aliasing in some games brought the performance down in our testing, but they also boosted image quality.
What's more, it would seem that some of the games actually performed noticeably better in DirectX 11, compared to DirectX 10 and 9, when the extra image quality features exclusive to DirectX 11 were not enabled, as we observed in Alien vs. Predator. This suggests that DirectX 11 rendering paths can be faster than their DirectX 9 counterparts while maintaining the same image quality level in some scenarios.
In terms of image quality, the new effects and graphical tricks we saw with DX11 added some extra realism not available in DirectX 9. Effects like screen-space ambient occlusion, depth of field, and tessellation really brought the graphics up a notch, adding extra atmosphere and realism to games like Aliens vs Predator, Bad Company 2 and Dirt 2. However, these effects were generally quite subtle and are nothing as dramatic as the image quality changes brought on by DirectX 8 or 9 in the past, which both offered major milestones in shader technology. It's also worth noting that, except for tessellation, these effects are all technically possible without DirectX 11 and compute shaders, as proven by Crysis.
DirectX 11's hardware tessellation and DirectCompute API have great potential, but currently they're being used to implement effects we've seen before since Crysis was introduced. While that certainly doesn't sound very impressive, it's worth noting that although the graphical effects are nothing new, DirectCompute now makes them much more efficient. So efficient, that all five games were able to run at full HD resolution (1920x1200) with all the graphics setting cranked to max without much trouble, even on the affordable $150 Radeon 5770. This means that game developers will be much more willing and likely to implement these effects in their titles, so watch for them in the coming months. Overall, performance in currently available DirectX 11 games is excellent.

imbecile comparisons and reviews (I mean who the fuck does image quality comparisons top/bottom... should have been a rollover flipping image - fucking idiots) In any case Directx9 performance was way better than the 'supposed' loss of image quality.
take BF2 a shit game, dx9 has no AA support, so why the fuck didn't they even do a comparison with dx11 with disable AA to match the comparison. I don't fucking play any FPS for extra image quality with sub 60fps shitty framerates. I'll take as much image quality and graphical effects that are built in and can be turned up as high without too much needless framerate decrease.
Even the dirt2 another shit game, but the dx9 framerates way better.. the supposed reason for dx11 being better image quality..right and looking at the shitty screenshots.. all that actually was obviously different between the dx9/11 version was water tessellation a cheap and barely noticeable effect.
At the end of the day not only are those dx11 games shit, but Winshi7e is still a piss poor OS designed for clueless noobtards with dumbest down Explorer core shell there is. Dx11/Directcompute(another Microshite anti open developer lock in API scheme, should be supporting OpenGL and OpenCL -the better direct competitor) Anyway that MS junk would never be enough to entice me, for one reason and that nothing exists to take advantage of those technologies that doesn't already work better on Xpsp3/64 and Dx9. And two I wouldn't give up a better more performant and already better customizable OS platform that doesn't have as many signs of design retardation changes all over it. At this rate of pathetic developments I don't see XP going anywhere until better OS steps up.

I can't translate 'Baaaaaaaaaa' for you nb411 :) (don't worry though plenty more show your symptoms in the flock) ...and if this is really what you're selectively choosing to hear and see:( that might explain the translation gap of why so many sheeple show a lack of understanding of what is going on around them and the direction they are being herded into and willfully/ blindly supporting. Its easier to not care or take an interest in understanding something like another side or why etc when you're satisfied enough with the way things are.
I don't like the road things are going down personally, but perhaps the technology helps the illusion of it all getting better and complacent ignorance makes it blissfully 'ok'.
baaaa dx11 really is a really good baaaaa selling point for pushing win7 baaaaad usage , along with other baaaaaa non-gimmicky features baaaaaa that can only be had on win7 of course baaaaa....

psolord | (10:43 AM CEST - May,13 2010 ) | I could agree that the latest Direct X, did not bring anything great. Especially DX10. The only valuable thing I ever saw with DX10, was that .1 that was added later. Yes I am talking about DX 10.1, that brought a large performance increase when AA was used. Other than that, I was never impressed by it.
Now DX11 is more of the same, but there are some undisputed improvements. The article failed to mention on of the better tesselation that can be found in Metro 2033. Have you guys seen the characters with tesselation on/off? There is a big difference.
However, we should not forget, that in action loaded games, you don't have the time to notice most details. At the end of the day, it's the overall feeling that remains as a memory in your brain. You don't get to remember every single detail out of it. Still, some people, like myself, tend to pause for a moment, and marvell of how much things have advanced, from Call of Duty 1 to Bad Company 2 for example. Yes there is a huge improvement being made over the years. We just have to study it at longer intervals.
These longer intervals, have to do with new consoles being launched. The real reason why PC Games don't take off graphics wise, is exactly the gaming consoles. We can expect a bug boost in graphics quallity for the PC, only when the next gen consoles arrive, no matter how many Direct Xs have arrived by then.
Anyway, personally I have played games since the Amstrad 6128. I have followed the market of home gaming and PC gaming through all their transitions. I even had a couple of consoles. All in all, I am pretty happy how things have turned out. It's that everything is so much money driven now, that it loses its romance.
All this technological prowess, would not have been possible if the hardware manufacturing processes, wouldn't advance the way they do. True hardware advancement's, happen every new chip fabrication shrink. People may argue that Metro 2033, although beautiful, is so darn heavy. Well guess what, it will be less heavy on the 28nm cards and so on. Exactly as was the case with Crysis. Still one of the most beautiful games ever.
I don't mean to make everything sound peachy though. Gaming is obviously beyond hardware alone, but hardware is an important factor to unlock the developer's imagination. The real problem comes for companies that want to push one game after another in the market, severely lowering the possible quality.

Haha, you know the only real problem I had with what you said was that Dirt 2 was "another shit game".
Dirt 2 is really good as far as racing games go, yet you call it shit just because you don't like it - lame. I think it was awesome and I will agree that the DX11 improvements are pretty hopeless since the only difference is the water and the flag tessellation for a noticeable framerate hit. Those 'extras' are barely noticeable in game.
This is why I bought a second hand GTX275 recently instead of some new Radeon because I don't think DX11 is worthwhile and won't be for a while.
We have to admit that consoles are driving the development or rather lack of development of the new Direct X technology. The PC market is relatively small by comparison and the only one capable of making use of DX11 right now, and again only as a small percentage of the overall (check steam stats). Therefore it does not make economic sense to drive DX11 forward beyond the kind of tokenism we are seeing with Dirt 2 and BFBC2 and others.
Once the new round of consoles come around, if that in fact happens at all, we will see more games utilizing the latest tech to the full extent, and again only as far as those new systems will allow into the future.
Koogle | (01:20 AM CEST - May,14 2010 ) | "Haha, you know the only real problem I had with what you said was that Dirt 2 was "another shit game"."
yeah I can be be harsh, it was said in a generalized fashion really.. of course its not a shit game afteral it has had developer effort put into the game mechanics, not an amazing game mind but... the point was more about its dx11 usage not really being that enticing.
