TechNews - Radeon R9 290X Review - tech
(hx) 01:13 PM CET - Oct,27 2013 - Post a comment / read (6)
  • Radeon R9 290X Review: AMD's Back In Ultra-High-End Gaming - After eight months of watching Nvidia go uncontested in the ultra-high-end graphics market, AMD has a new GPU based on existing technology that promises to challenge the top position. It gets mighty loud at times, but you can't ignore the R9 290X's price. It sells for no less than $1000 and comes equipped with 6 GB of fast GDDR5 memory. By all accounts, it's really well-suited for gaming at 2560x1440, it serves up playable performance at 5760x1080 in some games, but doesn’t quite move fast enough for 3840x216
  • Surface 2 - review - The Surface 2 represents a fresh start for Microsoft's tablet line. Sure, you could easily say that it's the second installment of the Surface RT (now simply called Surface), but with a new marketing campaign, a new name (Microsoft has dropped the RT branding entirely), beefed up internals and an updated operating system, Surface 2 is almost entirely new in every way, shape and form.
  • AMD Catalyst 13.11 Beta V6 - AMD sends word that the new Catalyst 13.11 Beta V6 drivers are now available
  • Run Windows 8.1 For 90 Days Free -I wonder if a 90 day test drive would change some people's opinion of Windows 8.1?  In related news, The Microsoft Answers forum is abuzz with a problem that seems to affect many people trying to update from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. It's a show-stopper that throws up two Blue Screens when the Win 8.1 installer reboots. Microsoft has a couple of suggestions for recovering from the problem, but at this point it doesn't look like the solutions fix the problem. Further confounding the situation, the problem existed back in June, with the Windows 8.1 Preview Milestone, and apparently hasn't been fixed.
  • Microsoft Releases IE11 Reliability Patch for Windows 8.1 - Without a large amount of fanfare and little explanation, Microsoft has released a patch for Internet Explorer 11, which is available for download through the normal Windows Update procedure. The patch is described on a Microsoft support page, which says simply that the file is supposed to improve "the reliability of Internet Explorer 11."
  • Students Can Get Microsoft Office 365 For Free -Beginning in December, Microsoft will be offering free Office 365 to all students at institutions that license Office Education under the Student Advantage Program.
  • KMS activate Windows 8.1 and Office 2013 - FaiKee has released a dodgy KMS tool can now activate Windows 8.1 by using a traditional Key Management Service workaround, and it works for all editions of Windows 8.1 too. This type of hack has long been used to "officially" activate Microsoft products, including Office and previous versions of Windows.
  • Microsoft Reports Record FY14 Q1 Revenue of $18.53 Billion - Microsoft has announced revenue of $18.53 billion for the quarter ended September 30, 2013. Gross margin, operating income, net income, and diluted earnings per share for the quarter were $13.42 billion, $6.33 billion, $5.24 billion, and $0.62 per share. Microsoft stock is up over 7% in after hours trading. These financial results reflect the deferral of $113 million of revenue primarily related to Windows 8.1 Pre-sales.
  • Mozilla's new Lightbeam download allows users to track trackers - Mozilla, the open-source software community responsible for the Firefox browser, has released a new download that allows users to identify who's tracking their Internet movements. Dubbed 'Lightbeam,' the free Firefox extension will enable users to see which third party companies are monitoring their online presence, a move that Mozilla states will 'illuminate the inner workings of the web.'
  • OS X Mavericks Review - The questionably named OS X Mavericks is out for all to purchase today. But should we trust this very incremental update? Are the performance updates really noticeable?
  • AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, U.S. Cellular to Sell Galaxy S4 Mini - Samsung has announced that the Galaxy S4 Mini will become available from the top U.S. network operators beginning in November. The GS4 Mini was first announced in May. AT&T, Sprint, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon Wireless have all agreed to sell the phone. The Mini swaps out the S4's 5-inch FHD display for a qHD 4.3-inch display; it drops the 13-megapixel camera down to 8 megapixels; and changes out the quad-core processor in favor of a 1.7GHz dual-core processor. The user-facing camera rates 1.9 megapixels and the Mini includes many of the same imaging features found in its larger stablemate. The Mini also carries over the GS4's multitude of apps, such as S Translator, S Health, WatchOn, Samsung Hub, and others. The Galaxy S4 Mini has 8GB of internal memory (5GB accessible by users), 1.5GB of RAM, and supports microSD cards up to 64GB. It includes GPS and GLONASS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, and an IR blaster for the remote control app. Availability and pricing will be carrier dependent.
  • Galaxy Note 10.1-2014 Edition spotted in UK sporting 16GB of storage - A reader has just sent in this image from a Currys/PC World in the U.K. where the tablet is up on display at £499.99 for 16GB of storage and Wifi connectivity. Interestingly the processor is listed as "quad core," even though the model hitting the U.S. is an octa-core (but we wouldn't be surprised if this was a typo in the end). The tipster indicates that the store will actually sell you one starting next week, even though they're already on display this weekend. I don't have any other solid indication of pricing or availability at other stores, although some online retailers such as Clove have the tablet listed at £479.99 for the Wifi model.
  • Nokia Debuts Lumia 1520 with 6-Inch HD Screen - Nokia has announced the Lumia 1520, a device that is the first to take advantage of new features built into Windows Phone, including a high-definition display and quad-core processor. The 1520 boasts a 6-inch full HD ClearBlack LCD with Gorilla Glass 2, sunlight mode, and high sensitivity for use with gloves. The latest version of Windows Phone supports a third column on the screen, which means owners of the 1520 will be able to add more content and Live Tiles to their home screen. The 1520 is powered by a 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, and comes with 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and support for microSD cards up to 64GB. The 1520 takes imaging seriously and includes a 20-megapixel PureView camera with dual LED flash, Carl Zeiss optics, lossless zoom, and optical image stabilization.
  • LG Fireweb Smartphone Powered by Firefox OS - The unveiling hardly comes out of left field, as LG had already stated that it wanted to work with Mozilla and build a smartphone powered by the Firefox OS. The physical design of the phone isn't the most exciting, borrowing some design cues from the company's lower-end L-Series phones. It only has a 4-inch display with a mere 480 x 320 pixel resolution, for example, a far cry from the 5-inch 1080p displays we see on more flagship-worthy devices. The rest of the specs on LG's first Firefox phone are similarly low-end. There's just a 1GHz single core Qualcomm processor under the hood, along with a 5MP camera, storage of 2GB to 4GB, microSD expansion, 3G connectivity and a smaller 1540mAh battery.
  • Apple Pushes iOS 7.0.3 to Fix Bugs - Apple made available a minor update to its iOS 7 operating system. The new platform software includes support for iCloud Keychain, which can be used to keep track of account names, passwords, and credit cards across Mac devices. According to the changelog, the system update also adds a password generator for Safari; updates the lock screen TouchID behavior and patches a lockscreen bug; returns web and Wikipedia search to Spotlight; fixes several iMessage bugs; improves iWork stability; eliminates a VoiceOver bug that impacted Siri and input sensitivity; and resolves an accelerometer calibration issue. iOS 7 is free to download over the air and is compatible with devices such as the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.
  • Cover - The right apps at the right time - Think lock screen that learns which apps you use in various locations - home, work, car and out - and floats them to the lock screen as you go about your day, much like Aviate does with your home screens. Pretty slick idea, and it actually does go beyond the lock screen and the full usage of the phone. It's invite-only for now, so sit back and let the hype flow freely around you. Can't wait to try this, though, especially the sick transition between the lock screen and an app whose shortcut you picked.
  • NSA Monitored Calls Of 35 World Leaders - The National Security Agency monitored the phone conversations of 35 world leaders after being given the numbers by an official in another US government department, according to a classified document provided by whistleblower Edward Snowden. The confidential memo reveals that the NSA encourages senior officials in its "customer" departments, such the White House, State and the Pentagon, to share their "Rolodexes" so the agency can add the phone numbers of leading foreign politicians to their surveillance systems. The document notes that one unnamed US official handed over 200 numbers, including those of the 35 world leaders, none of whom is named. These were immediately "tasked" for monitoring by the NSA.
  • Canyon of Fire on the Sun - video - A magnetic filament of solar material erupted on the sun in late September, breaking the quiet conditions in a spectacular fashion. The 200,000 mile long filament ripped through the sun's atmosphere, the corona, leaving behind what looks like a canyon of fire. The glowing canyon traces the channel where magnetic fields held the filament aloft before the explosion. Visualizers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. combined two days of satellite data to create a short movie of this gigantic event on the sun.
  • Captain America The Winter Soldier trailer UK - Captain America returns! The official first trailer for Captain America The Winter Soldier -- in UK cinemas March 26 2014. The sequel to Marvel's Captain America The First Avenger. Starring Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Emily VanCamp, Hayley Atwell with Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.
  • Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues - New Trailer - With the 70's behind him, San Diego's top rated newsman, Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell), returns to the news desk in Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. Also back for more are Ron's co-anchor and wife, Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate), weather man Brick Tamland (Steve Carell), man on the street Brian Fontana (Paul Rudd) and sports guy Champ Kind (David Koechner) - All of whom won't make it easy to stay classy...while taking the nation's first 24-hour news channel by storm.
  • Apple's Marketing VP Calls Batman "The Black Knight" - The FAIL video of the day is brought to you by marketing people that act like they are fans of popular culture to look cool. Martin Lawrence would be honored.
  • Volvo Trucks - The Chase (video) - This live test from Volvo Trucks shows how the new Volvo FL performs on tiny twisting streets in Ciudad Rodrigo, Spain.
  • Pushup Bra for Men Turns Man Boobs into Power Pecs - Good news (?) for males who still enjoy tight-fitted t-shirts. A new 'muscle-enhancing' top by U.K.-based Funkybod.com gives men who haven't peaked in the pectorals a chance to fit in with all the other fist-pumping brawny folk. The padded undershirt effectively serves as the answer to a woman's padded bra, acting as a 'confidence booster' for men everywhere. The shirt, which costs about $48, is available in black, white and grey. The top is meant to compress unsightly man boobs and reshape them into a more muscular-looking build.
  • Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo) plays slaps with our manager Dustin - Jason is releasing a new film called Road To Paloma.
  • Exploding Pumpkins with C4 and Det Cord - The RatedRR crew are getting in the Halloween spirit by blowing up pumpkins with C4 and recording it with a high speed camera.

  • NSFW: Slow-Motion Bouncing Boobs - Rachel Williams' bounces her fun bags in super slow-mo!! :P

Koogle> "I wonder if a 90 day test drive would change some people's opinion of Windows 8.1? "

I already have a copy of Windows 13. Holograms, thought control, all the stuff you would expect. It also deducts 25% of my income and sends it to MS.

Genoism(02:19 AM CET - Oct,28 2013 )
Personally I don't have any issues with spying on world leaders. Spying is nothing new. Every other country has their own NSA. But spying on your own citizens...that's just dirty and wrong.

Spying on your own citizens is not new, either and every government does that, too. Though some countries respect privacy and do not take it to the extremes. Spy in the public areas, and leave me alone at my home and private areas like my workplace, cinema, etc. and leave my children alone everywhere. I don't really care about the rest.
During the communism, back in the current EU, Russia, etc., they found the ill-willed individuals without prying into homes through the internet or infrared cameras and all those gadgets. Sure, it's cheaper and easier with these gadgets, but at what price? It's so easy to pick up patterns and things that stand out of the patterns just by observing traffic on the streets long enough - and that you can do from the sky/space nowadays...

In Amillennialist Veritas(07:53 AM CET - Oct,29 2013 )
[quote="Csimbi"]Genoism> During the communism [...] they found the ill-willed individuals

In the Soviet Union, the government were the "ill-willed individuals."

"In questions of power, then, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution." -- Thomas Jefferson
