TechNews - Is your system ready for VR? - tech
(hx) 11:42 AM CET - Mar,05 2016 - Post a comment / read (9)
If you're the type of gamer who likes to play the newest games, investing in virtual reality is a no-brainer. Oculus recommends at least an Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290 to accompany an Intel Core i5-4590 and 8 GB of RAM, while HTC recommends very similar specs (and slightly less RAM) to run the Vive. Considering both VR headsets essentially require gamers to run their favorite titles at 1440p resolutions with frame rates exceeding 90 for smooth, stutter free gameplay, having a PC more powerful than those listed above is a good idea.  Is your system ready for VR?
  • Hitman: World of Assassination Free With Strix R9 390 - ASUS has announced that both the Strix R9 390 and the R9 390X will come with a free copy of Hitman: World of Assassination. A nice little bonus if you were planning on buying the game or a new video card.
  • Oculus Will Get Mac Support If Apple 'Ever Releases A Good - Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey discusses tPalmer Luckeyhe Oculus Rift price and launch, Apple support, and his Tesla Model S car in this exclusive interview from the Microsoft Windows 10 Showcase in San Francisco.
  • Happy Goggles - A virtual reality headset -  Meet Happy Goggles, the Happy Meal evolution!
  • Ever seen a Floppy Disk with 118GB or more storage capacity? - This is real hack :P
  • What Happens When You Dare Expert Hackers To Hack You - Last year, after reporting on the hacks of Sony Pictures, JPMorgan Chase, Ashley Madison, and other major companies, REAL FUTURE's Kevin Roose got curious about what it felt like to be on the victim's side of a giant data breach.
  • How to take Better Photos with your iPhone! - Using these tips will help you get the most out of your iPhone camera.
  • Google Testing Hands Free Mobile Payments - Google today announced a new pilot program that will allow people to pay for goods and services without taking their phone out of their pocket. Hands Free Payments relies on location data, WiFi, Bluetooth beacons, and other sensors to detect nearby participating stores. Users need only say "I'll pay with Google" to the cashier, who confirms shoppers' identity with their initials and profile photo. Google is also testing in-store, camera-based visual identification methods for automatic verification. Google says all images captured by the Hands Free in-store camera are deleted as soon as the transaction concludes and cannot be accessed by the retailer nor even Google. Hands Free does not share full credit card numbers with the retailer and stores payment details securely. Transactions can only be completed when the phone is in or near the store. The service provides instant notifications after every purchase for verification, and can alert users to unusual activity. Transactions deemed suspicious won't be approved. The Hands Free app can be used on any Android device running 4.2 Jelly Bean and up, and the iPhone 4s and up. An Android Pay account is not required, but Android Pay users can associate the same credit/debit card with their Hands Free account if they wish. Hands Free Payments are being tested in a very limited pilot program in the South Bay, near Google's Mountain View, Calif., headquarters. McDonalds and Papa Johns are participating in the pilot, along with some local retailers. Google didn't say how long the pilot will last, nor when it might expand to other retailers and regions. The Hands Free app is free to download from the Google Play Store and iTunes App Store.
  • Sprint Brings Back Two-Year Contracts - With A Catch - Sprint has reversed its position on contracts and starting today began offering them again as an option to customers purchasing new equipment. Sprint customers can pay full price for phones, lease them, break payments up over time, or sign a two-year contract to purchase phones at subsidized prices. The company nixed the contract offering only a month ago. "We listened to our customers and are giving them more choices to get their new device," said a Sprint spokesperson to FierceWireless. "Sprint is the only carrier to offer the most choices to obtain a new device - lease, installment bill, two-year contract or pay full retail price." AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless have largely given up the idea of using contract pricing to lure in customers. There is, however, a big catch for customers who choose to sign a contract with Sprint. The cost of the service plan and device payments will be approximately $150 more than if the device is financed (without a contract) or purchased outright. For example, the 16 GB iPhone 6s costs $649. If paid for in full and then added to a 3GB monthly plan, the total of payments over two years at $50 per month comes to $1,849 before taxes and fees. If customers purchase the same phone with a two-year contract, they'll have to pay $199.99 up front followed by $75/mo for 24 months for the same 3 GB plan. The total in payments through the contract route totals $1,999 before taxes and fees. The total dollar amount by which contract purchasing exceeds paying in full or financing varies by handset and contract terms - but is generally at least $110 more expensive over two years.
  • Scientists achieve 100% efficiency for water-splitting half-reaction  - Splitting water is a two-step process, and in a new study, researchers have performed one of these steps (reduction) with 100% efficiency. The results shatter the previous record of 60% for hydrogen production with visible light, and emphasize that future research should focus on the other step (oxidation) in order to realize practical overall water splitting. The main application of splitting water into its components of oxygen and hydrogen is that the hydrogen can then be used to deliver energy to fuel cells for powering vehicles and electronic devices. The researchers, Philip Kalisman, Yifat Nakibli, and Lilac Amirav at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel, have published a paper on the perfect efficiency for the water reduction half-reaction in a recent issue of Nano Letters.
  • Watch Google's Robot Dog Play With A Real Dog - To be perfectly frank, I have very mixed emotions about the video you're about to watch. Is this how it begins? The robots trick us into letting our guard down by acting all cute and playful. Then the next thing you know, bam! Skynet becomes sentient and we're battling real-life Terminators.
  • Atlas, The Next Generation - A new version of Atlas, designed to operate outdoors and inside buildings. It is specialized for mobile manipulation. It is electrically powered and hydraulically actuated. It uses sensors in its body and legs to balance and LIDAR and stereo sensors in its head to avoid obstacles, assess the terrain, help with navigation and manipulate objects. This version of Atlas is about 5' 9" tall (about a head shorter than the DRC Atlas) and weighs 180 lbs.
  • Wintergatan - Marble Machine - Marble Machine built and composed by Martin Molin
  • Game of Thrones Kinda Life- The Tale of Jon Snow - SPOILER ALERT! Don't watch this unless you watch Game of Thrones.

  • Mega Waves Create Surfers' Paradise  -  Do big waves make you feel queasy? If so, then look away now. The waves at Praia do Norte, Nazare, Portugal are famed for being some of the largest in the world, attracting the world's elite surfers as a result. Filmmaker Javier Sobrado Lasheras, 27, wanted to capture the size and scale of Praia do Norte's waves as part of a documentary he is filming on the biggest waves in the Basque country. The video shows a host of professional surfers riding the Atlantic waves, which at times look more like white water or the edge of a waterfall.
  • Keanu Reeves Is A Badass - Keany Reeves firing a gun.
  • Tiger Woods Witnesses the First Hole-in-One at The Playgrounds - Tiger Woods designed this new course and the first shot ever made on it by this little dude was a hole-in-one. Pretty amazing!

No ATI/AMD here ever again, but thanks anyway.

Yup, it really is a no-brainer. Stay your arse away from it.

Oculus Will Get Mac Support If Apple 'Ever Releases A Good

Apple never released a good
They are good in ripping off others though, so I guess Macs will get their Apple VR headsets.
BTW, an Apple mouse has only one button, so I guess an Apple VR headset will have only one display in it.

Wow, nice!

Oops - where's my money?

Congrats!
So, I guess we get to drive a water-propelled car this century after all.

Meh, you can see better performance in Texas.

Could never achieve anything on his own.

My rig is not capable of 1440 at 90+ fps, no, and almost no rig is. For any even slightly demanding 3D application you'd be looking at a pair of Titans in a SLI configuration or something equally ridiculous.

I'm waiting for the next gen. Nvidia Pascal should arrive this year and from wall accounts we're going to see quite a speed upgrade.

Doesn't include the 3D version though - this is coming "at a later date".

Or: we like what LOTR did, prepare to be fleeced again later!

Csimbi, have you even tried Oculus? I have on a few occasions and it's actually quite cool. And btw, to my knowledge last time I tested oculus was on a haunted house game and it worked with a 960 4GB GTX card perfectly fine.

Yeah, it's quite cool - but for things other than real gaming.
I'd imagine it'd be best used in virtual explorations/tours - you know, Google Street view (or similar), home design apps, some educational apps, research and so on.
Gaming (real gaming, that is) is a far too intensive activity for extended use.
You'll be quickly fatigued/disoriented, so it's best if you do slow-paced things like the examples I mentioned above.

640K ought to be enough for anyone.

El_Coyote> 640K ought to be enough for anyone.
You had to remind me how old I am. :D
I guess today he'd say: 64GB should be enough for anyone.

Didn't find at all I was fatigued/disoriented. Never thought of Street View, haha that would be interesting.

BTW that floppy/memory thing is cool. Hehe!
