TechNews - Intel Core i7-4790K & i5-4690K tested - tech
(hx) 12:53 PM CEST - Jul,12 2014 - Post a comment / read (3)
  • Devil's Canyon Review: Intel Core i7-4790K and i5-4690K - If you own a relatively mediocre Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge or Haswell CPU, and have CPU limited throughput, there can be performance gains by investing into the Devil's Canyon (CPU + Z97 motherboard or Z87 with BIOS updates) ecosystem. These are 'enhancements' that Intel should build on for the future, and never remove. I am sure that many enthusiasts would like to see a return to soldering the IHS on, or a single version with this feature. For users relying on an Ivy Bridge stock system, the i7 Devil's Canyon can offer a 17% increase over the i7-3770K for CPU benchmarks. For those that need the fastest single-thread VT-d enabled processor according to Intel's specification pages, the i7-4790K also affords that opportunity. Users that are looking for the fastest GPU for gaming, at 1080p, might not be impressed by either the i5 or i7 Devil's Canyon. At least in our testing, we saw no improvement from Ivy Bridge to Devil's Canyon. One might argue that the story would be different for online gaming, or at larger resolutions, however for the latter there is more emphasis on upgrading the GPU over the CPU. While some hardware setups offer this mainstream CPU with three and four-way GPU gaming, typically we end up recommending the extreme platform due to fewer PCIe switches required.
  • Roundup: 5-way Radeon R9 280X Battle - Gigabyte's card is the best R9 280X available right now, offering the most out of box performance, best overclocking results, solid cooling and a competitive price. The R9 280X WindForce 3X OC's only weakness was in power consumption, drawing around 10% more total system power. However, that's due to Gigabyte's auto voltage feature, which we think is worthwhile for the added ease of overclocking and extra stability.
  • Hangout with ARM Fellow & GPU Expert Jem Davies - Anand chats with ARM Fellow & GPU expert, Jem Davies about mobile GPUs, Mali and more.
  • Sprint to Sell ZTE's Hotspot Projector - Sprint has announced it is bringing ZTE's smart projector to its network as the Sprint LivePro. ZTE announced the LivePro at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, which combines a digital projector and LTE mobile hotspot into one device. The LivePro runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and has its own 4-inch display. It is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor with 2GB of RAM and runs the complete suite of Google services, such as Gmail, Maps, Drive, and YouTube. The projector can access Sprint's 3G/4G networks, including Sprint Spark, and can serve as a Wi-Fi mobile hotspot for up to eight other devices. The projector has USB and HDMI ports, and supports Miracast for mirroring the screens of nearby smartphones or tablets. The LivePro can display content up to 1080p HD at distances between 10 inches and 10 feet, for a maximum screen size of 120 inches. The bulb is rated at 100 lumens and provides 20,000 hours of of life. The LivePro has a 5,000mAh battery that can be used to charge other devices if need be. The Sprint LivePro will be available via most Sprint sales channels beginning July 11 for about $450, or $18.75 per month for 24 months with Sprint Easy Pay. Data plans start at $$35 per month for 3GB of combined 3G/4G data while on the Sprint network.
  • How Cortana could be integrated into Windows 8 - Before Cortana, there was Louise, and thanks to a Microsoft research video, we can see how Cortana could have be integrated into the OS, if Microsoft were ever to do so. The video, even though it is old as we can see Microsoft referring to the modern UI as Metro, shows us what a Windows 8 with Cortana could look like. The personal digital assistant is tucked away neatly in the top drawer and looks to be quite useful on a tablet. While we do not know if Microsoft has any intention of bringing Cortana to Windows 8, we do expect it to arrive at some point in the company's PC operating system. The question remains, why did Microsoft not integrate this feature into Windows?
  • Samsung's Virtual Reality Headset Will Be Called Gear VR - The first picture of Samsung's rumored virtual reality headset has leaked on Samsung news site Sam Mobile. The headset, which will be called Gear VR, features a modular design that will let you slide in a Galaxy phone into the front of the headset. Samsung's Gear VR will depend on a Galaxy phone in order to work. There won't be any internal motion sensors or screen on the actual headset. Instead, the device will rely on the docked smartphone for both games and motion tracking. The Gear VR also features an interesting see-through button and touchpad on the side of the headset. The see-through button will allow users to use their phone's rear camera to view the outside world, while the touchpad will give users control of their phone. The Gear VR will be revealed along with the Galaxy Note 4 at IFA 2014 in Berlin.
  • Oculus VR acquires and open sources Raknet - The folks at Oculus continue their efforts to create an optimal gaming experience. So to that end, the company has announced the acquisition of C++ game networking engine RakNet. For those that own an Oculus Rift VR dev kit, they'll now be able to utilize the RakNet open source.
  • AT&T's LG G3 Reaches Stores July 11 - AT&T today said its variant of the LG G3 will be available in stores starting July 11, with preorders starting July 8. AT&T is charging $199 for the G3 with a new contract, or $24.17 per month with AT&T Next 18, or $29 per month with AT&T Next 12 (no down payment required with the Next plans). AT&T is also kicking off preorders for the LG G Watch on July 8. The G Watch will join the G3 in AT&T stores July 11. It costs $229. AT&T said it will offer a 50% discount on select accessories for the G3 and G Watch for a limited time when purchased in stores.
  • Xiaomi claims it sold 50,000 MiPads in under four minutes - Chinese electronics company Xiaomi is claiming that they have sold 50,000 of their latest tablet, the MiPad, in less than four minutes. It comes as no surprise considering this tablet is packed with an immense amount of power and priced to compete. The device is Xiaomi's answer to Apple's iPad Mini Retina. The Xiaomi MiPad has a 7.9" (2048 x 1536) IPS display, NVIDIA Tegra K1, 2GB RAM, 16 or 64GB storage with expansion via microSD, 8MP rear camera, 5MP front-facing camera, and a 6700 mAh battery. The device is available in five different colors, and is priced starting at $240 USD.

  • Gmail for Android Makes Sharing Drive Files a Breeze - Google has revealed a new feature headed to the Gmail app for Android devices. The latest version of Gmail will allow Google Drive users to insert files stored in Drive directly into Gmail messages. The app will prompt users to change their Drive settings when sharing files, and will also offer autocomplete suggestions for contacts when composing messages. Google said the Gmail app will be updated with the new feature over the next few days. Sharing Drive files will work on both Android smartphones and Android tablets.
  • Student Jailed For Refusing To Decrypt Data For Investigators - Apparently giving investigators 50 incorrect passwords will land you in jail for six months.
  • Foxconn to deploy 10k robots on assembly lines to replace human - According to comments made by CEO Terry Gou in a recent shareholders' meeting, Apple manufacturer Foxconn may soon roll out robots on its assembly lines in order to replace human workers and cut down on manufacturing costs. The robots, which could potentially help construct Apple's rumored-to-be-upcoming iPhone 6, are in the final stages of testing and are set to be deployed in at least one Foxconn factory in the future. The robot worker plan was first announced in 2011, and the 'Foxbots' are entering the final stages of testing -- which means that they could see deployment on Foxconn assembly lines very soon. Each robot apparently costs upwards of $20,000 to create, but for a company which boasts a workforce of 1.23 million, assembly line robots could be very well worth the steep price tag. Foxconn is still in the midst of a long-term public relations crisis, after numerous allegations of employee mistreatment and multiple cases of employee suicide. Since robots don't feel emotion, Foxconn won't have to worry about providing basic human rights to the 1 million robotic workers it eventually plans to roll out.
  • California's Extreme Drought, Explained - The state is experiencing the worst drought in its history. Find out just how bad the situation is getting and what it means for you.
  • 2015 Volkswagen Passat interior footage - Volkswagen has officially revealed the latest Euro-spec Passat B8, with the lightest version being just 1,315 kg (2,892 lbs). The German auto giants have big hopes from their flagship “business car” and have put some serious effort into making it up-to-date with some modern trends. The new Passat is based on an evolutionary design with dimensions a tad shorter, but wider and lower than the previous versions. The Passat B8 is 4767mm long, 1832mm wide and 1456mm tall (2mm shorter, 12mm wider and 6mm lower than the old one). The beauty of the new car is that it is considerably lighter than the previous ones. A saving of 85 kg (188 lbs) in a car like the Passat is a big deal. The engineers at VW have managed that by using a combination of high-strength steel, hot-formed steel and aluminum in the structure.

amazing how far the human greed goes. Foxxcon boasts a workforce of 1.23 million, they pay them peanuts but that's too much. Fire them and replace them with robots to save costs even further. Makes me wonder - does Foxxcon pay for electricity?

Also, at 20K$ per robot, I highly doubt they will be making 1 million robots. That would cost them 20.000.000.000$. 20 BILLION! They can pay the workers for the next 100000 years with that money. Highly unlikely "news". Remember, those people work for like 5$/day probably even less.
