Trophy Hunter 2003 Demo - demo
(hx) 05:45 AM EDT - Sep,17 2002 - Post a comment / read (1)
Infogrames has released a playable demo of Trophy Hunter 2003, Southlogic Studios' hunting sim. The demo clocks 97MB and is available from Infogrames FTP server.  Trophy Hunter 2003 will have players hunting big game from New Mexico to Alaska. Prey includes mountain goats, mountain lions and bighorn sheep. There currently are no details on the demo's contents.
You've reached the summit on horseback. The air is clear and the views are awe-inspiring. As you check your GPS, a low growl from a nearby treeline makes the hair on the back of your neck stands straight up. That's a grizzly - and he's not far away. But that's why you're here, hunting for the largest and most dangerous big game in North America. From the Sangria de Cristo Mountains of New Mexico to Alaska's Southern Range, you're stalking the ultimate North American big game trophies.

Since my previous experiences in hunting sims are limited to the "Carnivores" series, I am arguably too easy to impress when it comes to this type of games. I have, however, heard that "Carnivores: Ice Age" is supposed to be the best in its class. Not so anymore. TH2003 is nothing less than a quantum leap forwards when it comes to graphics and wildlife AI. Stalking a buck that's trying to keep together his harem of does only to see a cougar bursting out of the forest edge and making for one of the females is simply amazing. (Even better when the buck decided to escape in my direction. Easiest kill I've ever made! ;-) My main gripe with this game is probably the lack of visual range: barely 150m. This is plenty for the actual shooting part of the hunt, but the rest is like walking around blindfolded trusting luck and hearing to locate prey. Even with full details, my system (AMD 1.4gHz, GF3) pulled it off pretty effortlessly at 1024x768. I think most people today could tolerate a little extra gfx load for some more distance. But it is - after all - just a demo, so the finished game may surprise me yet.
