Valve announces new anti-cheat policy - briefly

According to the updated VAC support page, gamers will now be banned on the basis of the linked phone numbers. As a result, those having multiple accounts linked with that number will also be banned from the same game as the original cheater. In case the other accounts do not own the game, they won't be able to purchase it, while new accounts will not be able to link the same phone number for a period of three months. Currently, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, one of the most popular multiplayer games on Steam, has enabled the phone number ban. However, it is at the discretion of the developers to introduce it for their games and may not be implemented by everyone. As per the CS: GO blog, the latest update already supports phone bans, so players with known hacks should stay wary.

  • PC Gaming Remains More Profitable Than Console Gaming, Mobile Gaming Surpasses Everything - PC gaming will generate almost $32 billion while PC gaming will grow to $29.0 billion. On the other hand, mobile gaming (smartphones and tablets) is expected to generate $36.9 billion.

  • Seagate Begins Shipping Helium-Filled HDDs, Reveals Final Specs - According to Seagate, helium has allowed the company to substantially increase hard drive capacity and lower power consumption while using current magnetic recording technologies. The Seagate Enterprise Capacity 3.5 helium-filled hard drive is based on the company's brand-new hermetically-sealed platform feature fourteen heads and seven perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) platters with up to 1.43 TB capacity each. Seagate claims that the new HDD platform is based on a special wide-weld hermetically sealed drive enclosure with a design based on a multi-step forging process. Besides, it uses a motor attached to both top and bottom covers, in order to better handle vibrations and maximize reliability. Sensors for humidity, temperature and helium pressure ensure that the helium-filled drive is always being monitored for reliable operation.
  • Gmail for Android Gains Microsoft Exchange Support - Google today said the global Android Gmail app is set to add support for Microsoft Exchange. "Whether you're on Google Apps or Exchange, you can use the Gmail app on any Android device to send and receive mail," said Google in a blog post. Gmail will also be able to support Exchange-based calendars. Gmail has long supported the IMAP and POP email protocols, including Microsoft's Outlook and Hotmail services. Google added Exchange to Gmail back in November 2014, but only Nexus handsets running Lollipop had access to the feature. Providing Exchange support to all Android users is a big win for businesses that rely on Microsoft's email management product. Google says the updated app will be made available from the Google Play Store over the next few days.
  • Facebook Bug Allowed Attackers to Take Over Accounts on Other Sites - This "bug" seems like a pretty damn big oversight on Facebook's part. I can' t believe it is as simple as creating a Facebook profile with the victim's email address, adding a malicious email as the secondary, and then confirm the account using the bad email address. Bitdefender has identified a flaw in Facebook's account registration process which indirectly led to situations where attackers could take over user profiles on sites where Facebook Social Login feature was enabled. The vulnerability could be used if an attacker discovered that a victim had an email address which he used on a regular basis, but had not registered on Facebook to create an account.
  • Cortana Will Now Only Work With Edge And Bing On Windows 10 - As Microsoft has frequently pointed out in the past, one of Cortana's key advantages is the assistant's ability to 'get to know you', providing a more personalized experience in its OS. This only really works as a result of Cortana's integration with Microsoft's apps and services, providing an "end-to-end personal search experience" that improves the more you use it. Cortana is powered by Microsoft's Bing search engine, and the company's ability to provide that personalization depends upon that integration. But Microsoft said today that that experience is being undermined by third parties replacing Bing as the search provider, and Edge as the web browser that works with Cortana.
  • FBI won't reveal how it unlocked the San Bernardino iPhone - The FBI has decided that it doesn't need to reveal how it unlocked the San Bernardino iPhone, which will prevent Apple from identifying the security vulnerability and closing it through a software update. Under a rule brought in by the US government in 2010 called the 'Vulnerabilities Equities Process', government agencies like the FBI have to disclose any back doors or flaws in technology that they discover. The idea is that these vulnerabilities would be disclosed in private to the companies who make the products, provided the National Security Council gives the all clear, allowing them to fix the issue and keep Americans safe.
  • I installed Windows 95 on my Apple Watch  - With a 520 MHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage, the Apple Watch packs a lot of computing horsepower into a very small package. On paper, its processor alone is about twenty-five times faster than the average 386, and 512 MB was the size of a hard drive in the mid nineties, not memory. As a result, I was feeling confident that the Apple Watch had the ability to run one of the most revered desktop operating systems Redmond has ever produced.

Google is making a wide variety of leather and silicon bands available for Android Wear devices in four different sizes to ensure compatibility with most smartwatches. Google plans to make the MODE mechanism design available to other brands to expand the number of snap-and-swap bands beyond today's launch collection. Ubisoft Has New Cheat Detection - briefly
(hx) 04:35 AM EDT - Apr,30 2016 - Post a comment / read (2)
Ubisoft has announced they "have implemented new cheat detection methods," as apposed to preventing the cheats in the first place, to help improve the "player experience" in its cheat plagued shooter Tom Clancy's The Division.
From the very beginning of development, our emphasis has always been on the player experience and how good we want it to be. We have great plans for the future of The Division, and for these to succeed we must make sure to provide a smooth high-quality experience. Unfortunately, the gameplay experience was recently impaired by in-game bugs and players violating the rules of the game. In order to bring back a better and healthier environment, we have taken new steps to address the situation.

Cheating players have been an issue for a number of you in the Dark Zone, and we’ve heard this feedback loud and clear. We are strengthening our efforts to address this problem, as described below.

First, we have implemented new cheat detection methods that have allowed us to identify many more players currently using cheat engines in the game. We have already caught more cheaters in the last few days than we had in total during the previous weeks. As a result, we will be handing out the biggest wave of suspensions and bans to date over the course of the next few days.

Second, when cheaters are caught, we will now apply a suspension of 14 days on first offense (instead of the previous 3 day initial suspension). Second offense will always be a permanent ban.

We anticipate these two changes will noticeably improve your experience. New upgrades on cheat detection are underway.

What is a bug exploit?

An exploit is the active triggering and use of a bug or glitch to bypass established game rules in order to gain a significant advantage or skip progression steps otherwise necessary.

Identifying and fixing bugs before releasing new content is one of the most important parts of game development. This is also the best way to guarantee a smooth and enjoyable experience for our players. Learning from the past and your great feedback, we are currently reviewing our development and testing process to further minimize the amount and impact of these bugs going forward.

Unfortunately, we cannot simulate the experience that millions of different players will have, and how they will play the game. As a result, some bugs may make it through testing, and may be present when an update is deployed. In the event that a bug makes it into the game, and this bug can be used by players to gain an advantage, we need to be able to react and fix it, but also dissuade players from exploiting this bug until it is fixed. This is why moving forward we will adopt a stronger stance against players abusing exploits.

Our first step is to give you clearer and more concrete visibility. Should new bugs be discovered, we will quickly confirm if these are considered exploits. All known exploits will be clearly listed in a public forum thread and across our various communication platforms. We want all players to be informed. This will ensure that those caught after an exploit was confirmed are aware of the consequences and actions that can be taken against them.

Second, sanctions will be implemented for players who repeatedly abuse exploits and will vary depending on the severity of the abuse, as well as the history of the player. Possible sanctions include character rollbacks, account suspensions and permanent bans. Those who encounter bugs during the normal course of play have absolutely nothing to worry about.

As mentioned earlier, providing a high-quality experience is our priority. Fixing game bugs is one aspect of it, and we are improving our processes to address that. Dissuading players from impairing others’ gameplay by violating the rules of the game is another aspect. We also want to give you better visibility and transparency. We are fully committed to providing an enjoyable and fair environment for all our players, and will take all steps necessary to achieve this goal.

See you in game!

Battlefield 5: World Premiere Event, May 6th - briefly
(hx) 04:33 AM EDT - Apr,30 2016 - Post a comment / read (1)
Electronic Arts announced that the next Battlefield game will be revealed on Friday, May 6th. The announcement came on the franchise's official site, with a count down ponting to 4 PM Eastern Time. The world premiere will be livestreamed, and will stars the lead development team. Unfortunately, EA's ship seems to be far less leaky than Activision's, as the existence of the world premiere event is just about all the information we have regarding the next entry in the Battlefield series. An explosion of some nature is all we can see on the event page, but some fans think the phrase 'the future of Battlefield' might be a hint as to the setting of the sequel. Could 2016's Battlefield be the long-awaited followup to Battlefield 2142? It's certainly a possibility, but there have also been rumors that the next Battlefield will return to World War I or World War II. In other words, unless there's a major leak between now and next Friday, we're going to have to wait and see :-)

Space Hulk: Deathwing - Gameplay First Look - preview
(hx) 05:12 PM EDT - Apr,29 2016 - Post a comment / read (1)
Space Hulk: Deathwing is an upcoming first-person shooter set in Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 universe. Space Hulk: Deathwing is an adaptation of the Space Hulk board game, developed on Unreal Engine 4 by the team behind E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy, Streum On Studio. This trailer introduces the basics of the game: its premise, the teammates, the localised damage system, and some of the fearsome enemies players will encounter.

Infiltrate and explore the Space Hulk 'Olethros', a derelict collection of space ship and debris filled with hidden dangers and relics. As a Librarian, players can take AI squadmates or have fellow players join them in their investigation into the mystery of Olethros, co-written by renowned Dark Angels writer Gavin Thorpe.

Infesting the Space Hulk are ferocious Genestealers who utilise ambushes, swarming and tactical retreats in order to slowly tear down the player’s Terminator armour. Damage is localised, and taking too many hits in certain areas will cause your armour to malfunction. To stop the horde, you’ll have access to a wide assortment of weapons, skills, and powers taken directly from Warhammer 40,000 lore to customize your squad of Dark Angel Terminators.

Space Hulk: Deathwing will release later in 2016.

BLACKROOM Kickstarter Paused - briefly
(hx) 04:08 PM EDT - Apr,29 2016 - Post a comment / read (2)
Four days after launch, the Kickstarter for John Romero and Adrian Carmack's Blackroom has been cancelled, or 'paused'. The downtime will be used to develop a demo for "the kind of gameplay, look and innovative, cool features that make Blackroom truly unique—the things we've waited years to put into an FPS". It's probably a good call. Kickstarter campaigns do their best business in their opening and closing days, but Blackroom had raised only $131,000 of its $700,000 target. With a playable demo, Night Work Games will be in with a much better shot when it returns.
