More Win10 Concerns from Tim Sweeney - briefly
(hx) 05:14 AM EDT - Jul,27 2016 - Post a comment / read (8)
Epic CEO Tim Sweeney has once again voiced his concerns regarding Microsoft’s Universal Windows Platform (UWP), this time saying that Steam will be made to run worse on Windows 10 in the next few years. Down below you’ll find what Sweeney said about Microsoft locking down the PC ecosystem, and how they are trying to 'bug' Steam through Windows 10 patches.
How exactly do you think Microsoft is locking down the PC to make it a closed platform?

There are two programming interfaces for Windows and every app has to choose one of them. Every Steam app – every PC game for the past few decades – has used Win32. It’s been both responsible for the vibrant software market we have now, but also for malware. Any program can be a virus. Universal Windows Platform is seen as the antidote to that. It’s sandboxed – much more locked down. The risk here is that, if Microsoft convinces everyone to use UWP, then they phase out Win32 apps. If they can succeed in doing that then it’s a small leap to forcing all apps and games to be distributed through the Windows store. Once we reach that point, the PC has become a closed platform. It won’t be that one day they flip a switch that will break your Steam library – what they’re trying to do is a series of sneaky maneauvres. They make it more and more inconvenient to use the old apps, and, simultaneously, they try to become the only source for the new ones.

Given that Steam is so widespread and popular, how could Microsoft truly win that battle, in terms of games at least?

Slowly, over the next 5 years, they will force-patch Windows 10 to make Steam progressively worse and more broken. They’ll never completely break it, but will continue to break it until, in five years, people are so fed up that Steam is buggy that the Windows Store seem like an ideal alternative. That’s exactly what they did to their previous competitors in other areas. Now they’re doing it to Steam. It’s only just starting to become visible. Microsoft might not be competent enough to succeed with their plan but they are certainly trying.

Isn’t it the case that Microsoft is simply mimicking Apple’s model, given how lucrative it’s proven to be for software distribution?

Sure, that’s the motivation. They’re trying to copy Apple’s model, but they realise you can’t just flip a switch. It has to be achieved in small step changes.

New PS4-Exclusive Yakuza 6 Trailer - console
(hx) 04:25 AM EDT - Jul,27 2016 - Post a comment
The latest trailer features actor Takeshi Kitano, who was first revealed in a teaser last September. Other notable actors who make an appearance include Shun Oguri (Crows Zero, Great Teacher Onizuka) and Tatsuya Fujiwara (Battle Royale, Death Note). Yakuza 6 was announced exclusively for the PlayStation 4 during Sony's press conference at 2015's Tokyo Game Show. In addition to Yakuza 6 Sega also announced Yakuza Kiwami for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, a remake of 2005's Yakuza. Kiwami has not yet been confirmed for a released outside of Japan. Yakuza 5 came to North America three years after its release in Japan. We scored it an 8 in our review, earning praise for its engrossing storylines and rich settings but criticizing the less-than-sophisticated combat system.

Xbox One 500GB consoles are priced at just $249 - console
(hx) 12:55 AM EDT - Jul,25 2016 - Post a comment / read (3)
Microsoft has just announced that all Xbox One 500GB consoles are priced at just $249 in the U.S. The discount is available for a "limited time". This move is likely due to Microsoft wanting to clear the inventory of all the older 500GB Xbox One consoles before the upcoming smaller Xbox One S launches. The 2TB version of the Xbox One S is scheduled to launch in early August for $399, but the launch dates for the $299 500GB version and the $349 1TB version have not been revealed.
Treat yourself to a great deal this summer! Xbox One 500GB consoles are now only $249 while supplies last.

This means any 500GB Xbox One console is $249, including the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition bundle, the Special Edition Quantum Break bundle with white console, and the Name your Game bundle, which allows you to choose a full game download of one of four blockbuster titles: Forza Motorsport 6, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, or Rare Replay.

With blockbusters like Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3, ReCore, and Madden NFL 17 on the way, a growing number of Xbox 360 classics playable on Xbox One, and Xbox Live, the most advanced multiplayer network, everything you love about summer is even better with Xbox One.
Star Citizen version 2.7 screenshots - briefly
(hx) 12:49 AM EDT - Jul,25 2016 - Post a comment
PCGames magazine revealed some new screenshots and details about the upcoming 2.7 version of Star Citizen.
2.6 will launch Star Marine as separate module just like Arena Commander, this was also played by staff of PC Games and they are saying it’s much more polished on the FPS side and feels a lot better than current rudimentary FPS in the PTU. – Interesting side-note: they talked about map->s.

2.7 will bring procedural planets and you will be able to travel the whole stanton system and all planets and moons can be directly approached down to the surface.

They say the new lighting system as part of the procedural planets build looks much more natural.
They say that approaching the planet looks and technically feels better than with Elite Dangerous.
You can land anywhere manually, automatic landing gets you to fixed positions i.e. landing zones.
Microtech and Hurston come in follow-up patches after 2.7
They aim to have Stanton fully playable i.e. with all stations and landing zones (according to CR about 40 locations) by end of 2016
There will be more jobs and missions as well.
Trading will be in by then
Chris describing that missions accepted up in space stations could lead you eventually down to planet surfaces, not clear if this is going to be in with 2.7 but seemingly something SQ42 will benefit from.
Planets and moons are revolving around suns, with naturally simulated day and night cycles.
When flying over the ocean they were noticing that the horizon had a correctly simulated curve.
Trees and Animals seemingly are planned (edit: doesn’t seem to be in with 2.7, sorry) – they have them seemingly setup in pre-made templates they call eco-systems – these can be brushed over the planet surface, some magic blends the transitions to make it look naturally and consistent.
Planetary surface and topograhy details are controlled by a dynamical LOD system.
Some pop-up was visible during the planetary approach but they described it as impressive regardless.
They were also impressed with the cloud system, which wasn’t just a simple texture layer but seemingly is described what I assume would be volumetric, i.e. they have deepth and height and impact visibility, leading to mountain crests piercing through clouds and valleys being covered.
They are writing that there isn’t any artificially restricted view range, visibility is rather a result from the volumetric calculation of the athmosphere.
Parallax-Occlusion maps with dynamic tessellation is used for the surface details.
GTX 980 was used with 100 fps on the planetary surface, so performance seems to be pretty good already, sorry, that was just editor performance – in-game performance was 45fps 🙂
Some stuff about the subsumption-AI saying NPCs might have hobbies and a virtual mind, allowing them to remember the player or be influenced in his opinions by the player. To avoid performance issues, they seemingly control the update cycles for NPC AI based on player proximitiy i.e. update cycles go to 1hz instead of 60hz if no one is around.

TechNews - Seagate unveils a 10TB hard drive - tech
(hx) 06:28 AM EDT - Jul,24 2016 - Post a comment / read (5)
  • Seagate unveils a 10TB hard drive designed for consumers - If you want an enormous drive that can hold an absolute ton of 4K videos, photos, and games, but you don't want to pay well over a thousand dollars, then you'll need a traditional hard disk drive. Step forward, Seagate, with the world's largest consumer hard drive: the 10TB Barracuda Pro. The $534.99 BarraCuda Pro is one of three new 10TB hard drives from Seagate's new Guardian series. The other two, the $469.99 IronWolf and $459.99 SkyHawk, are designed for NAS systems and video surveillance, respectively. The Pro, which is for ''everyday desktop computing and storage,'' spins at 7200 RPM, has a 220MB/s "sustained transfer rate" and comes with 256MB of cache. It also has a 300TB/year workload limit (in 24×7 operation) and a five-year warranty. There are non-Pro versions of the Barracuda available, which are presumably cheaper. These offer a slightly slower 210MB/s transfer rate, a 55TB/year workload limit, and a two-year warranty.
  • Official Unboxing Video Of Galaxy S7 Edge Olympic Games Edition - Samsung is going for gold with its Galaxy S7 Edge Olympic Games Edition handset, a specially themed Galaxy S7 Edge in celebration of the 2016 Olympics in Rio. It's available to purchase today at Best Buy, but if you're stuck at work and want to check out what it looks like, Samsung has released an unboxing video with glimpses of the customized apps and UI.
  • Gorilla Glass 5 Will Survive Drops From Up To 1.6 Meters - Reportedly debuting with the Galaxy Note 7, the newest generation of Gorilla Glass is expected to survive "1.6-meter, shoulder-height drops onto hard, rough surfaces up to 80% of the time." It is probably still no match for beach sand, though.
  • Corning's Gorilla Glass 5 offers improved protection - Corning on Wednesday unveiled Gorilla Glass 5, the latest iteration of its popular cover glass that's said to further address a common concern among consumers: breakage from drops. Citing an 11-country survey, Corning points out that more than 85 percent of smartphone owners have drop their handset at least once a year with 55 percent saying they've done so a minimum of three times over the same period of time.  Indeed, cracked and shattered screens are a common occurrence in today's mobile-driven world. In the earlier days, scratches were just as much of an issue (if not more) although at this point, advancements in cover glass like those offered by Corning have largely eliminated the need for protective screen covers. Damage from drops, however, remains a pain point for the industry. In Corning's internal testing, the company said its Gorilla Glass 5 survived up to 80 percent of the time when dropped face-down from 1.6 meters (between shoulder and waist height for the average person) onto rough surfaces.
  • Skype to Drop Support for Older Windows Phone Versions - Microsoft has said its Skype service will no longer be updated for Windows Phone 7 - 8.1 and older versions of Android and iOS. The company said it wants to "focus on the platforms of the future" which means it "must end support for some devices and operating systems." Skype will continue to support Windows 10 for Mobile, Windows 7, 8, XP, and Vista, Yosemite on Mac, iOS 8, and Android 4.03. Versions of Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android older than those named here will no longer be supported with updates. Skype says its service won't cease immediately on older platforms, but as the company continues to move Skype to the cloud, some features may become broken over time.
  • T-Mobile Gives Away Free Service in Brazil for Olympics - T-Mobile has said its postpaid customers will have access to free mobile data and calling in Brazil for the entire month of August in honor of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games. T-Mobile customers will not have to take any action to enjoy free roaming in Brazil. Those who travel to Brazil will have unlimited high-seed data, unlimited calling to the U.S., and unlimited texting worldwide during their visit. T-Mobile said it is supplying the families of Olympic athletes with free T-Mobile service and a Galaxy S7 Olympic Edition handset through October. AT&T debuted its own roaming plan for Brazil earlier this summer, but it costs $50 to add to an existing service plan. About 100,000 Americans are expected to make the trip to Brazil to watch and participate in the games.
  • Verizon To Disconnect Data Hogs On Unlimited Data Plans - Are you one of those people that believe "unlimited" actually means "unlimited?" Well, if you are, and you are a Verizon customer, you'd better read this article. Apparently Verizon will be completely disconnecting users that consume more than 100GB of data a month unless they switch over to The Verizon Plan by August 31.
  • KickassTorrents shut down after alleged owner arrested in Poland - The most popular torrent site in the world, KickassTorrents, has gone offline today. The alleged owner has been arrested in Poland at the request of the United States governments, and domain names connected to the site have been seized. Artem Vaulin, a 30-year-old Ukranian living in Poland, is the suspected owner of the site and is facing extradition to the United States. He is facing two counts of criminal copyright infringement, one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, and one count of conspiracy to commit criminal copyright infringement. In a statement on the matter, assistant attorney general Leslie R. Caldwell stated that Vaulin is "charged with running today's most visited illegal file-sharing website, responsible for unlawfully distributing well over $1 billion of copyrighted materials."
  • Deezer Opens Up Service to Everyone In the US - Deezer today made its music-streaming service available to anyone who wants it in the U.S. The service was previously limited to Cricket Wireless customers and those who owned Sonos home stereo equipment. Deezer's offering is similar to Spotify, Apple Music, and Google Music in that it provides access to millions of tracks, radio stations, and podcasts to mobile devices. Songs can be streamed or downloaded for offline playback. Deezer is available to Android, iOS, and Windows devices. The app itself is free to download, but the Premium+ experience requires a $10 monthly fee.
  • Pokemon Go Player Smashes Into Police Car - Here is a video of a distracted driver who struck one of police cars. OMFG.
  • Pokemon GO: Bosnia Players Warned of Minefields - Bosnians playing the hit mobile game Pokemon Go are being warned to avoid straying into areas still sown with landmines from the war in the 1990s. A Bosnian demining charity, Posavina bez mina, issued its warning after hearing reports of Pokemon Go users venturing into risky areas. Players use their smartphones to hunt for cartoon monsters in the real world. At least 600 people have been killed in landmine accidents in Bosnia since the end of the war in 1995. About 120,000 mines remain undiscovered, a Bosnian demining group estimates. As the popularity of Pokemon Go has soared, there have been numerous incidents and accidents involving gamers
  • Opera to Sell Browser Business to Chinese Firms for $600M - Opera Software today scrapped plans to sell its entire business to a consortium of Chinese companies and will instead sell to them its consumer browser business. The original deal, valued at $1.2 billion, would have seen a handful of China-based investment firms take over all of Opera's businesses. The deal was unable to win government approval in Opera's home country of Sweden and had to be scrapped. Opera and the firms in question reworked the deal to sell off Opera's browser business for $600 million. Under the terms of the deal, the consortium will get Opera's mobile browser, including versions co-branded by mobile network operators; Opera's desktop browser, and performance and privacy apps; Opera's technology licensing business; and Opera's 29.09% ownership of a nHorizon. The Chinese investment firms will be allowed to use the Opera brand on these consumer-facing products. Opera Software will hold onto its Opera Mediaworks, Opera Apps & Games, and Opera TV businesses. Opera CEO Lars Boilesen will serve as CEO for both Opera and the divested unit until December 31, after which he will remain with Opera Software. Opera believes this new transaction will be complete by the end of the third quarter.
  • Japan's SoftBank to Buy UK's ARM for $32 Billion - SoftBank today announced plans to buy ARM Holdings for $32 billion. SoftBank runs one of Japan's largest wireless networks and is the parent company of Sprint in the U.S., while ARM designs and licenses the Cortex-branded mobile processors often found in today's smartphones and tablets. SoftBank's board of directors has fully approved the acquisition, which will be made in all cash. ARM's board and shareholders have yet to approve the deal. SoftBank believes its existing business relationships around the world will expand ARM's ability to license its technology in new markets. SoftBank said it will help ARM to continue to innovate in order to push into new categories, such as the Internet of Things, by increasing investment in ARM's research and development. The company believes SoftBank and ARM share a common culture and long-term vision, and can together create a strong combined entity moving forward. SoftBank said it is committed to ARM's U.K. operations, where it will double the number of employees over the next five years. "ARM will be an excellent strategic fit within the SoftBank group as we invest to capture the very significant opportunities provided by the Internet of Things," said SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son. The deal is expected to close by the end of the third quarter.
